Three games, Three decisions [Archive]

Seriously, ask your mom if you can spread the game purchases out rather than getting them all at once, since there are so many games coming out later this year.

For instance:
Homeworld 2
Half-Life 2
Halo (on PC finally!)
Xlll (cell shaded FPS, could be interesting)
Deus Ex 2
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (RPG)

All of those are supposed to come out in September and October, and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne are supposedly coming out in November.

Thats not to mention MMO games like Star Wars Galaxies (not sure if I want to play that one) and Everquest 2 (not sure either) coming out.

I think Lionheart is supposed to come out this August as well. If you like RPG games, Lionheart is being made by the same people that did the Fallout and Icewind Dale games (Black Isle Studios) and is using basically the same character ruleset as the Fallout games (modified for a medievel setting with magic).

Damn it....there are to many games coming out this fall.

Out currently my picks would be PS, Raven Shield (mostly for the online play alone, it rocks hard :D), GTA : VC and in the not so new there's always SoF2 that i love and BF1942 which is pretty good. :D

Oh and any sims game.....:lol:

I would say Planetside for 3-4 months of fun, maybe more if they keep adding stuff at this pace...

Doom3 is a must buy even if it is as short as people are claiming. I am presuming that it is going to become the new modder's game, just like Quake, Quake2, Quake3, and half-life to a certain extent were.

Half Life 2 is not doing much for me, it's graphics have to compare to Doom3, and they do nothing of the sort, the lightning system does not look like anything special, and I think lightning does more for a game's atmosphere then anything else.

Deus Ex 2 is going to be a pretty huge game IMO... So PS, Doom3, and DE2.

Star Wars Galaxies

CnC Generals is the best RTS game out right now. I cant get enough of it, and they keep making it better each patch.

For FPS games its tough. Halo 2 will be great for playing on the Xbox with your buds. Half Life 2 will be hands down the best FPS. PlanetSide comes in at third, but if you cant wait for a good FPS, go ahead and get it. I wodnt recomend PS except for the fact that you have so many PCs. Chances are PS wont run on fully half of them but youve got so many backups it HAS to run on one of them. I got lucky and it worked on my third machine (albiet at lowest system settings) after having it hardlock continously on my Alienware 2.8ghz P4 with Radeon 9700 and 1056 MG DDRAM.

Star Wars Galaxy is a no brainer if youve been checking up even once a month on their website. These guys are not fucking around. That game is going to be awesome. Its going to be everything EQ, DAoC, AO, and AC should have been.. and its going to be what UO2 could of been.

I dont trust gaming magazines for shit. Every single one of them reviews based on the check they get in the mail from the publishers.

Ive played RTS games since the genre was freaking invented (Herzog Zwei on the Sega Genesis) and have followed most of the good series (CnC, WarCraft, Total Annhilation, etc) religiously.

Generals is, without a doubt, an excellent game.

Graphics are superb. The highest setting makes your jaw drop when you watch tomohawks fly through the air or a nuke go off in an enemy base.

The units are reasonably plentiful and almost everything is PERFECTLY balanced. Each faction has its strong points. EVERY unit has its strengths and can play a valuable part on the battlefield.

CnC Generals is one of the few games where combined arms really DO make a difference. Most of the RTS games in the market have you make 50-100 of a unit and zerg rush the base. Not in Generals, that strategy will get you a loss in a hurry.

Just as an example, most of my battle groups consist of:

--3 Crusaders (main battle tanks) to take the blunt of anti-armor shots
--5 paladins (higher firepower tank with less armor and with a laser turret to shoot down enemy missles) behind the Crusaders to lay down the heavy fire
--3-4 tomohawks in the back laying down targeted artillery fire and to pick off the enemy artillery
--4 humvees (upgraded with TOW rocket launcher) with 2 rocket infantry covering the flank nearest the enemy base to provide anti-armor support and anti-air
--2 sniper infantry spread out wide on the flanks to increase vision (so i can target with tomohawks) and to pick off incoming footsoldiers
--3 Comanches (helicopters with machine guns and rocketpods) to hit the flanks of enemy armor once my tomohawks knock out the anti-air in an enemy division
--2 Auras (high speed bombers) flying patterns behind my strike force, ready to bomb a critical enemy building or mass of armor once the anti-air has been neurtralized (or sooner if i think the sacrifice is worth it).

Now THATS combined arms. Takes mad skill to manuever a group like that and keep everything working smoothly but ive wiped out enemies with armies two to three times my size, simply because my forces flow like water and i meet enemy units with what they are weak against.

Good lord.. i gotta go play some Generals right now :)

Doesnt change the fact that CnC is a great game.

Way i see it, i rarely ever see anyone bitching about CnC as a game. Sure, i see some whines on MIGs or technicals, but i dont see a "CnC SuX" thread but once in a blue moon on the official forums and on the main unofficial ones.

Only people ive ever seen bitch down Generals are the people who have never played it, or who expect it to play like StarCraft and not like the CnC genre (which is hugely succesful and popular).

Were getting off topic though. I didnt want to turn this thread into a CnC Generals good or bad thread.

My opinion is the game is the best RTS game released in a long time. It even squeeked ahead of Warcraft III.

Oh, and WC3 is good, no doubt but the strategies are so limited. 90% of the top players just mass a single type of unit they r good with and couple it with a hero they are good with and zerg swarm.

Knight swarm with archmage
rifleman swarm with MK
huntress swarm with blade daemon
spider swarm with lich

And the worst thing is, combined arms dont do shit.

If you have your food spent on knights and the other half on riflemen, and your enemy rushes you with 100% knights.. your fuked. It makes no sence to use combined arms in that game.

If somoene tried using a single unit on me in CnC id laugh my ass off and hand his back to him. Rush me with 30 crusaders? Lol, ill destroy your whole army with 10 rocket infantry or 3 comanches. Wunna rush me with 20 chaingun tanks? 5 paladins will whipe the floor with you.

Thats what i love about Generals. Clear strengths and clear weaknesses. Brain and skill at command over "who can pump out 50 knights first".

Oh, and r3d? If you already have BF1942 and Generals... what the hell else do you need? PlanetSide aint gonna top that, not even close. Not for at least 12 months when they get all the bugs worked out and give it as much content as all the other games coming out as soon as they release (even with 12 months of new content i doubt itll be as much as Halo 2 or Half Life 2).

How did you get bored with it? Did you get stomped? Not meet any good people online?

Maybe your not playing the right faction. I started out with the chinese and got bored in a few weeks. Decided to try out USA before i left and havent looked back since.

WRONG, SoF2 was just never, fun to me. I was missing that special something that made it a real FPS

Its a new game, with new balances.

Trust me, go online and play a few 3v3s and 4v4s. This game was designed for huge battles. Dozens of migs streaking through the sky, ion cannons searing the battlefield, huge ground armies crashing against each other. Gives me the jibblies just thinkin about it.

Play 3v3, 4v4 till you get the trick of it. I guarantee youll have fun. Once you got some decent strategies, play some 1v1s.

Me, personall, i went straight into 1v1. I lost my first 2 games... then won my next 30 or so games in a row. This is a game where, if you have good tactics, you WILL win. I hated how in WC3 it was all about build orders and getting a rush in first.

Not so in Generals. You can use camo units to spot your enemy and if he tries to rush.. well, youll have enough time to make a counter unit or two (all you need) to defeat his rush and catch the edge.

You obviously havent if you think this game allows for pussy stategies involving bringing '50' tanks in under 2 minutes. First of all, the earliest you can attack with is in 5-6 minutes (for it to even have a tank or two). The quickest rush is with china, where they make 2-3 gatling tanks and rush you.

If your playing US, no sweat, a single paladin or crusader tank will take them out. China? Pffft.. the gat tanks wont do shit to you anyway cause your gathering units arent air. GLA? stinger sites will r4pe them.

Got a US player rushing with a humvee filled with rocket soldiers? US: use 2 rocket soldiers to laser the humvee and 1-2 rangers to handle the soldiers that *might* escape alive. China: use a gat tank and strafe, cake. GLA: your stinger sites, tunnels, and infantry will do the trick.

Personally, i think youve never played the game before. Anyone that compared this game to the other CnCs by lumping together as "all" obviously has no clue. This game wasnt even made by the same developers (westood vs EA).

$20 says your some guy that read a magazine article written by some punk who got raped 5 times in a row online and decided to give the game a C cause hes a newb that wants to use his "l33t zerging rush" and win.

I, too, praise WestWood for their legacy. However, im not stuck in the past enough to not realize that CnC Generals is a game that attains versatility and balance in a fast paced, beautiful RTS.. the likes of which developers will be emulating for years.

No longer will we be living in the shadows of RTS genres like WC (1,2, & 3) or CnC Red Alert (1 & 2) where "skill" was denoted by who had the fastest build order and could chug out 50 knights or 50 tanks first.

Generals is a game where the units have roles defined by their strengths and weaknesses. 50 tanks costing 40k credits will be laid to waste by 10 anti-tank infantry costing 4k.

Ive been waiting a long time for a RTS which required actual skill on the battlefield. Where positioning of troops in key locations, flanking, terrain tactics, and (most importantly) micro management played a large part of the battle. My prayers have finally been answered :)

Honestly if someone could give me a reason why they dont like Generals other than "EA isnt WestWood", "Other CnC games sucked", or "I havent bothered playing online"... then maybe ill take you seriously.

I was following generals since they annouced it.
I followed it for along time and then It finnaly was on pre-order.
I got it played it for a week straight. Beat all single play missions in under a day and then had a crap load of friends over and we played generals for about 2-3 weeks.

Like i said, you havent even played this game.

5 minutes is what it takes to get your supply center, barracks, energy plant, and war factory up.

Then, if you actually want to pump out tanks you need to spend the remainder of your money on supply units to get you enough income. Otherwise you can make a grand total of 1 or 2 tanks before you run out of money and are royally fuked.

Time to make 8-10 tanks? Between 10-12 minutes. Thats not even counting the time it takes you to get over there.

Your either a liar.. or your playing hacked games of Generals. Im pretty certain its the former.

If you ever decide to decide to actually get the game give me a ring on AIM at TekGriffon. Ill show you how to get schooled on multiplayer. Im almost positive your ass aint gonna break my 100+ winning streak.

C&C Generals, although it's rather short. Planetside if you don't have it. Don't buy DAoC, it's crap. In fact Don't buy any of the MMORPGs currently out. Wait for SWG and/or EQ2 (maybe WoW although I have serious reservations about this one)

Deus Ex 2? I hadn't heard they were making a sequel. Very very cool that they are though :)

Homeworld 2 might be interesting, first was an amusing way to kill a couple hours at least. Same with Halo on PC. Never played the game on X-Box because, well, X-box is the spawn of satan :p

HL2? Meh. Don't get me wrong, I'll probably still play it. The first one was really cool the first time I played through it. Hated the "oh nose the icky monster is coming after me!" aspect of the game though.

You can have Doom 3. The first one was good only because of how revolutionary it was. The second one was horrid, if I remember correctly you couldn't even jump x_x I dunno again I just don't get inot the whole kill the scary monster type of games.

Much more excited for Deus Ex 2 (now that I know it exists :p ). That game had such a cool story behind it :)

OK you two. I've read thru your comments and I've come to the conclusion that neither of you are going to give up your arguments.

Here's what I'm suggesting, no, telling, you to do. Use the ignore feature! Go to the most recent post by the other person (if you're r3d, go to tek. If you're tek, go to r3d.) and look at the bottom right. See the little [I]? That means ignore. Both of you click it on the other person. Trust me. It will settle many, many things.

I'm a laid back mod just like hamma, so I'm not going to lock this over a little argument. But please guys, let's try to act a little more civil?

I think Lionheart is supposed to come out this August as well. If you like RPG games, Lionheart is being made by the same people that did the Fallout and Icewind Dale games (Black Isle Studios) and is using basically the same character ruleset as the Fallout games (modified for a medievel setting with magic).

Damn it....there are to many games coming out this fall.

actually i do this frequently, i love fallout its one of the funnest games ever, i particularly like stockpiling up weapons in Navarro base, once i had at least 3 of every weapon cept the special encounter weapons, i think i had 300+ 10 mm pistols last time i played

Try Morrowind if you haven't. It's pretty sweet. I played it forever and never did actually get around to doing any of the main quest sicne there's so much other stuff going on.

Depending on what game types you like, pick up the fallout series (Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics). All kick ass.

Arcanum is also good. You can actually play it different ways depending on your character. (many games claim that, but this one actually does it) For example, some things just aren't possible for some characters. I couldn't get anyone to tell me about one person in particular, so I had to go off on this side quest for some different people and happened to run across a clue on a piece of paper to tell me what to do with one of my characters. On the other hand, with a different char, I just walked up to the guy's shop and asked him what I wanted to know and he let me inside his place and talked to me. Completely different method to get where I needed to be. :)
