I dont know if this has already been posted about.. but its definatly worthy of posting again. Here are a couple bandwidth commands to help with lag. I toyed with it a bit last night and had a much better experience..
***NOTE: These settings will not be available to you until after tonight's patch (6/10/03).***
It's possible to change your bandwidth settings to restrict or expand the maximum amount of data that you're sending/receiving.

This can help smooth out gameplay for low bandwidth users and can even allow smoother gameplay for high bandwidth users if they have the pipeline to support it.

The current default is the "Medium" setting below.

If you have a 56K modem, you should consider using the "Low" setting and see if it improves your gameplay.

If you have a "fat pipe" (T1 or T3), you can consider going with the "High" setting.

Most everyone else should be fine with the "Medium" setting.

Remember...if you experience gameplay issues at Low or High settings, you should probably revert to the Medium setting.

To change your bandwidth settings, type the following in your chat pane while logged into the game.

Low Setting
/info switchboard cullwatermark 40 80

Medium Setting
/info switchboard cullwatermark 80 120

High Setting
/info switchboard cullwatermark 120 200

What I'd like to know is what those numbers mean for gameplay, precisely.

Those commands change the amount of packets your sending/receiving and the size of one packet.

Aren't they going to tweak this because of all the people exploiting it?

They plan on "Tweaking" it yes.

I used the high setting myself. I am using Cable w/2.1mbit down and 250k up

"exploit it"

How could changing your packet size be considered exploiting the game?

It's bad because if people can't whine and moan about lag and crashes then they'd have to actually start whining about gameplay..

Just kiddin..

If you putz with it enough, I think 56kers, can almost induce lag, thus making it appear everyone is standing still, and since hit detection is client side, you hit them.

Im a 56ker. When the lag happens bad enough that people seem to stand still it also tales about a minute to reload my gun, and a minute for doors to open.

Plus I think the lag is on my side only. Meaning I die very fast because I have no idea who is attacking me.

Basically the lag makes the game unplayable on a 56 k.(Sadly this is happeniing with the "40 80" setting.)

You type this info into the chat area in game.

So to change it to low: /info switchboard cullwatermark 40 80

I had almost no problems on a 56k before this last patch, but since the patch (and I did change my settings to low right away) I'm having my worst problems yet. I tried changing it back to medium but it just got worse, so I put it down to low again. Just about every day I get to a point where I go to an equip terminal and hit G and nothing happens. Because this info is all supposed to be client side I would hit G and then 6 (the favorite I want to load) and then sit and wait. If I continue to sit, often nothing happens. If I continue to hit G and then 6, after about 2 minutes the inventory windows will come up and flash a few times and then take care of it (although many times it misses the second key stroke). When trying to defend a tower or base, this isn't the best situation. More than a few times while I'm waiting for the system to recognize my commands the tower changes hands and I get to make a last stand in the basement with a pea shooter.

I would imagine it just changes the packet size. not the amount of packets.

What would you all recommend for 768k SDSL (upload and download) speeds? High or Medium? Thanks.

Spiff, I would try High with your connection. :)

Thanks Prowler. I'll try it out tonight. If the rumors are true - about it taking care of even the lag issues experienced within Emerald, my characters on Markov should have an easier time maneuvering. :D

I have a feeling that because all the broadband players were complaining they mad some sort of change that basically screwed 56kers.

My guess is they will add some kind of GUI interface to tweak this in the future.
