Okey Dokey, I'm saving up for a PC that is strictly for games and graphical design software (As well as Flash, Dreamweaver and Fireworks). This site I've found (Novatech (http://www.novatech.co.uk)) lets you build custom PCs and the processors it offers are AMD or Intel. Should I get the AMD Athlon XP 2700 (2.17GHz) or the Intel P4 3.06GHz 533MHz System Bus?

I know the Intel is much faster, but it's also 120 more and I've heard that AMD is better, even tho it's only 2.17GHz.

Help please

AMD if you wanna Overclock, Intel for buying a new CPU to increase speed later.

ill post the thread i made on this question later.

I'm a big proponent of AMD. Grab a mobo with the nForce2 chipset and you're good to go.

I just buy a computer

Silly, I know

For games the AMD 2800+ (on a board w/ nForce2 chipset) actually performs better than a P4 3.06. On the other hand, the 3.06 kicks it's ass when it came to video decoding and the like, where hyperthreading came into play. Personally, I use AMD, much of the reason being that the cost/power ratio is better with AMD for what I do (which is game, surf the web, and program).

Intel is more stability, and AMD is more power but AMD do over heat alot more and faster then a intel.

AHA my AMD RULZ ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Athlon XP 2700+
512 DDR PC3200
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
120 GB Seagate
LED fans, Cold Cathode Light

okay first of all, the gigahertz doesnt matter like you think it does: more is better. intel has brainwashed you into that. So a 2700 amd would perform much the way that a 2.7 intel would, but with the amd you can overclock and yadah yadah.

The front side bus means squat: dont buy into it. GET AN AMD

thanks Onizuka for un-brainwashing us all!

This is a dangerous argument.. always goes bad. Its like asking republican or democrat.

I prefer intel myself

Hamma is right. I'm an AMD man personally, but its not like Intel is bad or anything.... nowadays its simply a matter of money and prefrence, they pretty much perfom the same...

I don't see why AMD is always considered better for overclocking. I can OC my 2.4 ghz p4 to 2.8 well within normal parameters, and with a stock fan.

And, onizuka, you're right to say that a 2700 Mhz AMD would outperform a 2700 Mhz intel, but an AMD 2700+ would perform very similar to a 2700 mhz p4. Big difference.

I like AMD. It's basically equivalent in speed but it's cheaper

I thought if you over-clock an AMD, when it overheats it blows up. Like restarting the system or something, like mine does

thats when you over over-clock it :)

I dunno what it is, but I'm guessing overclocking is messing around with the settings to make it faster than usual. Am I right? I've decided I'll get AMD, thanks for the information!

You can OC a Intel just as good if not better then AMD at this point.

Both of my systems are AMD and I'm happy with them.

My geforce 3 card is showing a bit of age, time to go to Radeon 9500 (or higher) pro some time this summer or christmas.

Ok, here are the facts that I gathered after running an extensive test on a pair of computers that were the same other than the bord/chip set.

Overall picture:

AMD: Preformance was about as a tan wave, you can peak it higher than Intel, however its inharint unstability for over processing leads to several problems.

Intel: Preformance looks like a sin wave, functions and processes are smoother and more predictable, with only small deviations in stability

Why:

The easist way that I can explain this all to you is like this:

AMD runs in base sets of 8, that means that it grabs 8 peices of info and process them, then the next 8, next 8, etc until it finishes
Intel runs with a base set of 16, that means that it grabs 16 peaces of info and processes them, the next 16, next 16, etc until it finishes
However, you can process 8 much faster than 16, but you can process 16 faster than 8 and another 8

SO:

If it is a small program, AMD will be able to process its sets of data faster than Intel since intel must process at xyz speed even though it may have 2-3 sets of data, however, when you push the system and force it to do many sets, the 16 ends up being much faster.

Thus:

AMD can proces smaller programs faster
Intel can process larger more intensive programs faster

Thus things like high end games will run faster on Intel, but you can launch an explorer window faster with AMD

So, Intel gives you that extra edge for high end stuff, but the real question is:
Is it worth the greater amount of money?

That is something that you will have to decide.
I myself went for intel after looking at these results

**I also have some independent reasearch I will upload and post here at a later time**

Thanks Vulcan, I needed a good headache to top off my Monday.

Its what us Vulcans do best ;)

here, the end result:

AMD can proces smaller programs faster
Intel can process larger more intensive programs faster
..........
but the real question is:
Is a small boost in high end preformance worth the greater amount of money?

ALL of my systems are Intel based. My friend has AMD and I out perfrom him with ease. ;)
