Here is another pic of the orbital strike I took tonight. I don't know what CR the person was who did this, but I thought it was a nice pic. If you click on the image, you will get a larger version.

Is it just me, or is that a waypoint beam in the middle? Or does the orbital strike just resemble a waypoint beam...?

Even if it is a personal waypoint, which I think it is, it does sorta add to the effect :p
Yes, that's my new background as well :brow:

As someone mentioned, it reminds me a lot of the Phoenix cam, the shading around the Beam coming down is awesome, great pic

It's not a Waypoint. The OS projects a thin, waypoint-like line before "firing" (It's not instantanious, think independence day, big blast has to conduct through the beam) I guess to warn friendlies.

...it's like a wee ion canon blast :D

Really, the blast radius is pretty small, you can observe without dieing.

The "waypoint" is an empire-colored (blue/red/purple) "warning beam" that starts illuminating the target during the 10 second countdown. If you notice it early enough, you can clear the blast radius before the actual strike hits.

To answer your questions,
Has the pic been edited?
No
Is that a Phoenix cam?
Yes
Is that a personal waypoint next to it?
D'oh, yes. Didn't have time to turn off my waypoint.
Also, that was the third one I saw that day. So seems like everyone is using the orbital strike right now. I'm sure you'll get your chance to see it.
It's not *that* impressive in action though - all three times I didn't even hear a sound accompanying it. Once I thought I was right in the middle too but I didn't die.

No better feeling than being the one to call out the enemy AMS in the courtyard of the base you're trying to take and having your squadleader and outfit leader say "Incoming orbital strike on that position" other than seeing RagingGerbil <AMS picture> <some poor terran> spam in your kill window and literally clear everything else out :D
