View Full Version : Range on Weapons?

Does any one know what the actual range on the Pheonix is before the guide line snaps?
Navaron
2002-12-28, 09:46 PM
and - Does it actually have a guide thread.........

Technically it COULD be a radio controlled missile, but a wire is simpler and more reliable (no jamming). However it is more limited in range, as noted.
I would like to know the max range both for wire guidance... and total flight time. Say if you flew the missile to just where the line would snap, and aimed it at a turret, then the wire snaps... how far could it travel until the warhead self destructed?
CDaws
2002-12-28, 10:07 PM
Well after the wire does snap it goes into dumb fire mod and would eventually fall to the ground either by gravity or the propellent being used up, that is if it didn't hit anything first.
Woooooohooooo the girls of planetside are on my forum.
Nothing like bubble headed beach bunnies to go home to after a hard days fight on the battlefield. ;)

They don't self destruct, they fly like a regular missle once the tow cable breaks, and detonate upon impact. They fly true after visual is lost.
CDaws
2002-12-28, 10:25 PM
But what's the range before the cable snaps and you loose guidance control?

topless? go find some real porn if you're that desparate
And who ever said there was a cable for the phoenix? As far as I can remember the Redeemer in UT (same principle) had no cable =/
I'm sure they would have made it so it's a lot less likely to jam or what have you, seeing as this is in the future.
Sandtaco
2002-12-29, 01:28 PM
Hopefully you can jam it with that jamming device...
CDaws
2002-12-29, 01:45 PM
If you did use the jammer grenade you would have to throw it at the soldier guideing the Pheonix to dissrupt the signal unless, you timed it just right for the grenade to explode in the air of the missels path. If you do that to screw up the missle you might as well just kill the soldier using it and save the grenade for a better purpose.

You could always try and shoot it down  :sniper:

That's true you could, could shoot it down. I wounder just how hard it will be to shot a Pheonix out of the sky.
Navaron
2002-12-29, 04:18 PM
I was the one who started the thing with the TOW cable. I know that the thing this is based on uses a series of wires to guide it, and I was guessing that this would have something similar. If not at least a "signal" that would be lost at a certain range. I was thinking that otherwise they could be flown forever. Anyway........

2002-12-29, 04:34 PM
It could be like a touring device!
See the world of Auraxis through the eyes of a Phoenix missile! Only $3 per use! At the end you even get to blow something up! :D

Well smartass,
Over on the thread that this topic started on *I* brought it up. Would you like some steak sauce with your crow?
Navaron
2002-12-29, 05:01 PM
Here ya go......
"Just a thought, If this is modeled after a mounted or shoulder fired TOW missle, these things have a wire tether that leads back to the base (From this missile) which is what transmits the signal to the receiver. However, this thin brace of wire snaps at a certain distance, albeit far, but then it is just a dumbfire missle that has been guided in. So in theory, you have to be reasonably close to guide it to your target - probably in range of a sniper or a MAX or a tank - so you'd better get your ass in gear once that thing makes impact."
And on top of that, dio mentioned something across those lines b4 you posted. Wow, you can fit your whole foot into your mouth? Thats cool.
:p (I'm just messing with you, don't get all testy - I hate that)

Just imagine seeing a Pheonix fired flown through a group of infantry right up the middle just to kill a Max or other armored unit. Nothing like seeing a missle comming right at you only to buzz your head and blow up behind you. :D And there's no other infantry weapon that you can control the flight path of after its been fired. Everything else is either lock on ( fire and forget ) or dumb fired, it's too easy using faf weapons. I like a challenge. Steaksause ruins crow. Now after you clean one and defeather it you cook it like you would a cornish gamehen with stuffing inside it with a few spices. Bake in an oven on 350 degrees F and wait untill it's a golden brown. It's actually quite good if you do it right. :D

Navaron
2002-12-29, 10:28 PM
Well lets think about balance. The missle has to be fairly hard to steer and fast otherwise it will be going in doors. It also has to have a range limit. I doubt it actually has a TOW line. There must be a long/no reload time. Other wise every NC will pack one (fine by me) and every battle will start off with a volley of TOWs. Actually that'd be cool as hell. Nevermind.
