A 2.8 Ghz P4 with 1gig DDRAM, 120 gig HD, and a Radeon 9700 Pro. Cost me almost exactly 2,000 dollars. Sweet system right?

Well, some of you may say I overpayed and you could build the same PC for $800 less, blah, blah, blah.

First of all, good for you. I cant.

Second of all, i  Alienware tech support.

Not only did those guys give me a machine thats compltely optimized for the ultimate gaming experience, they dont take no shit when I dont get that ultimate gaming experience.

My machine was having some serious issues with high end programs after 7 months of being the perfect computer. Something was fuked. I codnt play high end games for more than 2-10 minutes before my PC hardlocked!!

So I called up techsupport today and they walked me through drivers (i had all the newest ones). Then they talked me through resetting and cleaning my video card. That didnt work. Then they talked me through checking my 4 sticks of DDRAM memory (256mg a peice). Thats didnt work.

So then they offered to send me a free replacement video card. I told them i wasnt sure it would fix the problem. Then they offered to have the PC sent to them free of charge. I told them i was wary of being away from my PC for so 2 weeks (which is BS cause i have 2 other 'decent' CPUs).

So guess what? Next monday they are sending a guy to my house out in the middle of the fucking eastern shore of maryland (ass end of nowhere) to replace my Radeon 9700 and ALL my DDRAM memory sticks... FREE.

If that doesnt work, the tech support guy is also bringing another area 51 CPU with the same specs as mine. I get it for free if he cant fix it.

I  Alienware!!!

I got an alienware once before I realized how simple and cost-effective it was to build your own computer. I was happy with it, and it was top of the line, but I sure wouldn't fall for it again.

You can get much prettier cases/save money/etc/etc/etc by doing it yourself. ;) And honestly, anybody could build their own computer, they just need to get over the fear and have a little help along the way. :)

Blah, my experience with Alienware wasn't as good. We spent over $3000 (close to $4000) on a new comp from Alienware and it wouldn't even work when we got it. It would freeze up and I couldn't play any games at all.

I rather enjoy getting more 3dmarks than 2 of my friends with Alienware systems that cost 2-3x as much as mine did.

Oh, and you can make home-built systems that look *much* better than their crap - that alien logo over the fan grilles (on some models) and the rest of the case looks really tacky.

My theory is if I put a $600 processor in my computer witha $200 mobo and I fry it, I'm out $800. If I hire someone else to do it, and they fry it, it's their problem. Of course that's totally untrue depending on who you hire but Alienware's #1 aspect that I love is actual customer service and not shitty "Thank you for calling Dell, I have no idea what I'm doing and in fact have never even seen the inside of a computer, but let me just ask you 30 minutes of inane and insulting questions before even asking what your problem is" customer service :p

Exactly. I give props to you "l33t PC builders" but no matter how "l33t" your asses are.. hardware CAN become corrupt and hardware CAN burn out.

If I had built my own computer and this problem had occured, i would be out a good chunk of change. As is im getting it fixed for FREE.

And not only are Alienware cases entirely too cool, we got matching keyboards and mouses (my cute lil mouse with alien logo = )

alienware is far from a ripoff, sorry.

Their tech support is the best out there hands down. With dell you get people who have such a heavy accent that you cannot understand what they are saying. If you ask them to repeat themselves they become rude, and most of the time they won't solve the problem.

Alienware actually takes pride in making quality computers. They're built by gamers themselves, optimized by gamers. And as you can see, they will go to great lengths to see their customers happy.

Alienware may be pricey, but it is damn worth it in the long run.

Hey Lise. I been able to play for a while. I just had to use my old 1.6ghz GeForce 3 PC. Grahics aint nearly as good but at least i can play w/out the 2-10 min crashes.

Yeah the case is designed well. They even have sensors inside the case that measure heat and energy usage. A "watch dog" program was put on my taskbar that alerts me when a component is getting to hot.

So far ive only had it get too hot once, when i was at college and our air conditioning broke and i was playing WarCraft 3 for like 10 hours straight :)

But chances are your hanging out on a D&D Forum with nerds who think Silicon Transmutation IV is an actual real life spell.

who uses tech support... noobs who just go their first computer? "yeah, umm the retractible cup holder just broke"

People who are tired of beating their head into a wall because their computer is not working, have posted all over the place looking for solutions, are told to try what they've already tried numerous times much of which is contradictory but tried anyway out of desperation and just want their computer to be more than a 50 lbs paperweight.

The thing about Alienware is they don't fuck around when trying to get it to work for you. They actually get to the bottom of it and much quicker than your average PC retailer. People who ask "yeah, umm the retractible cup holder just broke" don't buy alienware either for the most part, they buy Dells :p

Right now I'm in the process of trying to figure out why Planetside is going apeshit (I say apeshit because that's about the only way to describe it, got lots of...interesting screenshots though if someone wants to host them :p ) after 5-15 minutes of play with the only way to temporarily fix it being a restart of my computer, which nets me another 5-15 minutes of playtime. This after playing all of open beta and most of retail wih no problems at all. It's frustrating as hell ;)

That's when you RMA it.
I have never, EVER had a RMA request refused - even when the fault isn't clearly attributable. When I got a bad mobo (it actually had a nice crack in it, just below the AGP slot) from Newegg, not only did they send me a new one via one-day air, they also gave me $100 store credit.

I sincerely doubt that if your video card dies 4 years down the line, they're going to be jumping to send you a new one. Hardware rarely just stops working (within the desired lifespan of it) if you treat it with care - if you're looking for tips on how to prolong hardware life, I can post some stuff that will help.

Don't assume that this exact set of statements doesn't apply to homebuilt comps as well. :)

Don't assume that this exact set of statements doesn't apply to homebuilt comps as well.

I think that was a defense for the "Why not just get a Dell" sentiment. Obviously a homebuilt computer built my a gamer is going ot be geared towards gaming :p

But you missed my point. My point is not if it comes broken. My point is if I screw something up while tossing in a new Processor and mobo, I'm out the cash I payed. Not if it comes to me with a crack in it, but rather if I screw something on it up royally. If someone else installs it, like say Alienware, and they screw it up, it doesn't cost me a thing to replace it ;)

That said I have nothing against people who build their own computers. I'm probably going to end up upgrading my computer myself. For $400ish I can double my processor speed. I'd love to be able to afford an Alienware machine but 3k is a lil' spendy for me :p

shinken
2003-06-25, 01:35 PM
i have to hand it to alienware because of their great customer service, but i can not afford that good of a computer and i like doing it myself, tech support tends to be automated messages that only work if you know exactly what is wrong, and most ppl are fairly computer ignorent and don't know anything about whats wrong, and then have to take their comp to a repair place and pay $100 or so for somthing thats they could do in 15 minutes if they'd of known whats wrong so if i had the money i'd probably get the AW just in case i cant figure out whats wrong or dont have the money to repair, but thats just me and every1 has their own opinions

Tek,

They are not fixing it for free. You paid about a $700 dollar premium to get support for one year; unless you paid for a longer warranty. So, you've already "bought" the new video card and the guy to come visit you. You also almost paid for two machines, if you take out the case, keyboard, mouse and power supply costs.

When I was in the market for a new machine, I bought from XDream Machines. They saved me about $500 over Alienware and have a better case, imo. This was before the current Alienware case.

Good luck with the repairs and have fun gaming.
