There will be no NPC's

Warborn
2002-12-30, 05:56 PM
They're likely doing all they can to make sure people can get as good a ping/framerate as possible in Planetside. Adding NPCs would be a step backward, and probably wouldn't contribute a hell of a lot to the game. Immobile things like turrets are likely in as base defense, but there will likely not be NPCs which run around and fight in PS anytime soon, if ever.

I personnally feel the game really needs some wildlife. Its just so empty to have huge maps and no wildlife to speak of. Wildlife would only add to the gameplay and take away the dead emptiness I'm sure there will be without them. I mean say ya wanted to take a gander at the country side but the country side is completly void of any life other then the players in the game.

Wildlife is really going to take away from the focus of conquer other empire. This game isn't destroy your opponents and look at the pretty animals. If the game is played correctly there shouldn't be any dead emptiness. Hard to be bored in a war that's going on all the time.

Honestly guys. Your here to just shoot other people? I was hopeing this pay to play would filter out all the 'killer frenzy' people that don't give a rats ass about gameplay.

The whole thing is, from my understanding, suppose to try to immerse the player into the game life so that you feel like your in a real place. I for one would like to go driving around the ten continents looking at the scenery quite often and with no wildlife its gonna feel like its just some dead rock of a world that would be completly lifeless with out the players. It should be very full of life and herds of animals in remote areas where battles perhaps won't take place as often.

I think Starwars Galaxy would be awsome for the very reason that it has such imersive worlds with loads of different wildlife and more thick plant life and so forth. Makes ya feel like, even when your alone your surrounded by nature's life in a virtual world.

But honestly I play these games for the tactics, strategies, depth, immersiveness, and GAMEPLAY. Enjoying killing people is not enjoying gameplay. Enjoying killing is enjoying everything thats evil and demonic.

What the hell are you talking about vimp? Have you read the PS backstory?

We are in the middle of the largest war there has ever been. We are figthing for survival.

This game is not about "enjoying nature" or "driving off to look at the scenery," it's about fighting alongside your fellow warrior for your cause.

And no, we don't all sound like "10 year olds" looking for a gore-fest, we just know what the game is going to be about.

Edit: and if you think killing people in a game is "evil and demonic" I suggest you play a different game. The tactics, strategy and gameplay you talk about all have one goal - destruction of other people.

End.

THen they come here and the official boards and yell "THIS GAME SUCKS, TEH LAG IS INSANE, ALL BECAUSE OF A HERD OF BUFFALO"

I can either answer Vimp's concerns thoughtfully and with consideration, or I can try to enlighten by being a smart-ass. Let's try the second one first, and see how that works.

Good Reasons to play Planetside:

1. You want a First Person Shooter with persistence of state.
2. You want to join the chaos of huge three way battles and help turn the tide.
3. You want to storm/infiltrate bases and seize control of them over a 15 minute hell clock.
4. You want to fly a troop transport (or drive an APC) that actually has real troops inside.
5. You want to fly a gunship or scout fighter.
6. You want to defend bases against assaults and infiltration
7. You want to deploy static defenses and tend them while waves of enemy soldiers try to break through.
8. You want to drive/sit gunner in a tank, scout bike, buggy, etc. etc.
9. You want to snipe at the unwary foe and evade the inevitable hunt that follows.
10. You want to be a medic, /engineer, helping your side last longer in attack or defense.

Bad Reasons to Play Planetside:
1. You want to go on safari and see herds of indigenous lifeforms
2. You want to bake bread, build a house, or sell forged hammers.
3. You want to socialize and be diplomatic with your enemies.
4. You want to see what soldiers do in their off-time.
5. You want to look up at the sky and ponder when the wormhole will reopen and bring peace to Auraxis,
6. You want to join a group and camp a rare spawn for a rare drop.
7. You want to level up and collect phat lootz.
8. You hope for a better life for the people of Auraxis.
9. You want to talk to an NPC and go find a quest item for him.
10. You want to be immersed in elements outside the primary focus of this game (which is to push your enemies back to their sanctuaries and be master of all you survey).

people play games for fun. people get fun from a lot of different ways, and just b/c they get kicks off of killing other players (which provide a fun challenge over AI) doesn't make them any more violent. if u do not like the thought of 'merciless demonic' empires fighting for their survival on a tough environment, maybe this isnt the game for u.

Here's the thing. They were originally going to have all the mmorpg elements in the game, from apartments to economy/items to social clubs. Then during the course of development they realized that the game lacked focus. While there are groups of people who find many of the non-essential gameplay elements to be engaging and fun, they were still non-essential to the game itself. Planetside is an FPS and the only features that have survived the development cycle are the ones that enhance the FPS gaming experience.

Now the question is what really enhances the game and what is fluff. You love Tribes, so you understand the core of the game lies in using strategy and tactics in a team environment to defeat your enemies. Whereas Tribes was more built around a capture the flag model, PLanetside focuses on capturing actual bases in an Unreal style Domination game. Unfortunately, while ambience such as animal herds and other 'world candy' features are cool, they have nothing to do with the gameplay, and thus won't likely be seen in the game.

We're not bloodthirsty mass-murderers, we're FPS gamers. I'm not going to explain the difference.

The thing is, 99.9999% of the players playing an FPS know its a GAME. They enjoy the contest of intellect and skill in the enviroment of "killing" thier opponent, which if you think about it, is a rather silly way to look at it, since they will just respawn anyway....

Vimp
2002-12-31, 01:55 PM
See now that just tells me that none of you understood what I was really getting at in the first place. Which I can only blame myself for I guess. but i think Airlift has the right idea. Obviously wildlife isn't essential or necessary but all I was getting at is that for me it would make the game seem much more real and indepth.

As far as the killing goes I wasn't arguing that taking out players online isn't fun but rather what makes it fun to some people. Some, usually yonger people, or at least I thought, like blood and guts so they get a thrill outa taking out people online cause they feel like they are really killing which in my opinion is whats very wrong. Viewing it as just a game where your taking things out regardless whether its other players or something else for the challenge and gameplay however is different.

Sandtaco

Hamma, that is total horse crap and I think you all did miss his point. You are so filled with hate for role playing games you just jump on the guy.

If what Hamma says is true I could get a team of 3 people to code planetside in about month. Everybody would a floating round ball. Blue, red, or black. You could switch weapons but their would be no graphics. Mountains would be big polygon pyramids and bases big cubes.

Is this what you want to play? No. The whole point of a persistant world is Immersion. If you want to play a strict FPS game go play Quake. If you think this is going to be, log in, shoot em up, die, respawn, shoot some more....I have a feeling its not the game for you.

Gameplay. Its all about gameplay. What enhances gameplay? That is the ultimate question. First and formost is style of play. First person view, gravity, guns, shooting, killing, planes, etc. Great we have all those things. If you put the best game play in the most basic world you are still going to have a shitty game. And at the same time if you have best graphics and horrible gameplay....shitty game. Its a combination of both.

Flock of geese.....or whatever. Flying you little plane, two guys hot on your ass. You see a familiar spec on the horizen....a flock of geese. As you buzz them they scatter, a few get caught in the intake of you persuers planes. Slows em down enough to let you escape. Same thing as hitting the deck and flying through a canyon or buzzing around a mountain. It is all about enhancing game play.

The comment about fluff is totally ignorant. Any moron can program a game. Fluff is that last 5% of development that makes an ok game amazing. It is the crap that makes you go, "Oh damn, that is sweet."

Does planetside need roaming hordes of buffelo? Probably not. Does it need fluff and tons of neat stuff added to make the environment more immersive? Of course. Fluff like that doesn't add to lag and ping. The server knows where all that crap is. 250 people fighting over a base....well you have all kinds of lag issues. You probably wouldn't want your grazing heard nearby then :)

In short. Stop yelling at the guy because you are biased against role playing games. A MMOFPS has just as much need for immersion as a MMORPG does. If it didn't...why the hell would you play it? Who wants to fight in a persistent world that isn't worth fighting in?

I dubt the blood and guts are the motivating factor for most players. The real joy comes from defeating an intelligent and resourceful enemy. That's why the lamest competitve multiplayer game can be more engaging than the single player games with the best AI. No matter what, your enemy is essentially unpredictable and can always suprise you. And when you do beat them, you have the express knowledge that you outsmarted and/or out-executed another thinking human being.

Vimp

Well thats hardly a strong argument.

I mean you could say the same thing about the graphics and such. 'Its WAR' not a place to go sight-seeing and have a picknick in some dewy meadow. But yet you can't argue that the fact that they've made the scenery look so good will deffinitly make the game funner to play will it not? Then wildlife is the same thing. 'Looks' do matter. Granted they arn't everything but they diffenitly add to the game.

Hamma
2002-12-31, 03:35 PM
First off, This has nothing to do with RPG's.. if it did PS would have apartments, money.. etc. Fact of the matter is its an FPS, its also new type of game. Id rather have the devs concentrating on gameplay rather than messing around with a flock of geese or somthing, its just un-needed. Its taken 2 yrs to develop without those things so obviously it cant be done in a month.

Bottom line, u want a petting zoo, buy a zoo game. You want war on a massive scale without worrying about geese getting in the way, play PS. No matter how much we debate this minor factiod its going to remain the same, there wont be any roaming animals :p at least not for release.. its just not part of this type of game - and it should not be. Okay, so that herd of Buffalo should come wondering into the field of battle? Of course, if they did they'd get blown to little bits. Okay, so a flock of geese would take a little more programming than we're willing to let happen because we want this damn game as soon as possible. However, i think things like this should be in the game. Not for release but at a later date, hopefully soon. Not necessarily birds but certainly an occasional rabbit or lizard or something. I'm the type of person that likes to get totally immersed in a game, which is why i have a tendency to lean towards RPGs versus FPSs. I like both types of games but there's just never been anything in an FPS to hold my interest. I think PS will be different because I'm fighting for a cause and it's not just me versus the world. I want something to fight for. I want to see the land as my home. If there's nothing on the land but bare rock and a few trees how is that worth fighting for? Why am i in this stupid war?

Let's be pragmatic about this...

If I walk out on my back porch and fire my BB rifle, all the birds for the next two yards go flying.

If I drive to my mom's place and fire a shotgun, all the birds for the better part of 5 acres go flying.

If I fired an 150mm cannon, I'm pretty sure everything and its mother within a few thousands yards would haul ass once that thing was fired.

Assuming the whole war thing has been happening for a little bit, what the hell kind of wildlife is going to stick around? A lot of animals have sensitive hearing. 150mm cannons and Galaxies landing and that's going to solve the whole pesky wildlife problem.

That guy who said something about orbs and no graphics is probably the least intelligent person I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Of course all FPS are driven by the competitiveness and killing, but another factor is realism. As the realism increases (Graphically and gameplay) it adds more to the fighting. The entire purpose is to add to the fun of the game, and making animals would just be annoying. It would be unrealistic because in a human warzone all the animals would be dead or gone within minutes. They shouldn't spend time on crap like that, but work on the aspects that enhance the purpose of the game (which is what they are doing, they are on the right track) which is the killing and competitiveness. I don't see why animals would do this

Duritz
2003-01-03, 02:39 AM
Frabaktos I'm not against you because I really don't care much either way, but DUH!!!

Realism IS immersion.

And it is realistic because animals can't run when there is nowhere to go(the whole planet is a warzone). Plus, animals don't run too far away from warzones, animals return to their homes days after major battles are fought. So just put animals in areas away from bases (fights) and you have no problem.

DarkJaguar
2003-01-03, 02:42 AM
besides, animals would just add lag, and that would be dumb.

Not necessarily. I mean they'd likly have the animals in the country side away from buildings like Duritz suggested which would mean the animals would only be taking up a bit of resources that would other wise be taken up when your near a base but because your not near a base ya got alot less cpu power needed so when out in the country side the animals could use some of that up. No major war is likly to be fought out in some feild in PS because fields have no strategic value, only the bases do thus thats where the bigger amalgamation of players will be seen generally speaking.

A feild with a herd of animals and 50 people compared with a huge complex base with over 100 people. Personally I doubt the first one would take as much as the last one as far as lag and CPU usage would be concidered.

The only creature I want to see is some giant lake monster that eats Hamma's vehicle everytime he attempts a "water landing". :D
