View Full Version : Ingame physics engine, how good is it?

As the topic states, I'm curious about how good the ingame physics engine is. Skidding and sliding is a very real part of driving a vehicle and add grealty to the realism and fun when in one. So does rolling, doing 180/360 and other fung stuff too. In many FPS games the vehicles are handled in a simpler way, since they are not the in focus as much as the single soldier. Even in games with much focus the vehicles are handled in a very simple way (the jeeps in Battlefield 1942).

I really hope that the vehicle physics are as good, or nearly as good as in Halo, where you can do anything with your vehicles, and it looks and feels real.

I hope for the same, but i wouldn't put any money on it.

Considering this is an MMOFPS, that might cause too much lag on the server. They'll try to do things that reduce lag, but still offer a fun and fast paced game.

Vehicle control in Halo is great. i did a triple front flip in a warthog yesterday :)

I don't think complex vehicle physics would lag the server. It should should take a tad more cpu power... It's pretty hard to code physics like that though. It's even hard to have a turret aim at a moving target. :)

From what I've seen so far, the physics engine is actually pretty good. In all the movies they showed (the Gamespot ones), the vehicles seemed to drive and slide in a very realistic manner.

It's more the actual feel of the weapons and running about that bothers me. I think games like Half-Life and Tribes 2 pulled it off nicely, but Battlefield 1942 and such failed - in my opinion.

I hope this game doesn't have weapons that feel like pop guns and running that makes you feel like a ballet dancer, heh. :D

Just from watching the videos, it reminds me of C&C Renegade.

This is also mostly based on physics. If the player accelerates into his runningspeed it feels better than if he just start and reaches the runningspeed directly. This is the same foor strafing.

Jumping should be smooth and not take away any of the speed the player has, since it then feels unnatural. Also, they should allow jumping directly after the first jump to speed things up. This is what I've found to give the best feeling.

Edit: Where do you get the movies?

If you're willing to pay, you can get them from gamespot.

What if I just spent all my money upgrading my comp, although it was already a beast I wanted to make this game look good. Is there a way to get some movies for free?

I think they mentioned that the physics engine will be something like the one that is in UT2003 whit it's "points on game model" thing.... If you've ever played bomb run mission in UT2003 and fallen down the lazer grid and down the shafts you'll know what i mean. Or just fallen down some stairs. It's a pretty cool and realisict system if tweaked right =)

Dying in odd ways is the best part of that game.:D

Dying in odd ways or landing dead on the ground in an odd position? The floaty cadavers option is awsome. :D

Hang on a sec, are you guys talking about the ragdoll physics? I was pretty sure that was *not* the case. Hamma would know. He died a few times. What's it look like when you drown hamma?

Well, yes but I wasn't saying they'll be in PS. I've never heard anything about that.

I dont know what it looks like when you drown lol. Pretty sure you just fall over. As for when you get hit for a vehicle or somthing, your body goes flying. :D

I think they have ragdoll physics, i remember a dev saying something a while back about how the UT2k3 people got the idea for ragdoll physics after seeing PS at E3. Then again i have been known to imagine things like that. Hamma, what do you mean saying you don't know about drowning, we all know what that lake did to you.

Is it base or classic physic ?

Don't think of how the person dies in UT2003, just notice what happens when he dies and falls down a pit full of beams... thats a pretty good deal really.

Now think of the same system applyed to planetside.. for example when the buggies drive around watch the wheels, you'll notice they react independently depending on the surface and the force thats applied to that point of the model. Look at gamespot vid nr 10 and just look at the wheels, you'll see what i mean.

I doubt there will be the "rag doll" deaths of UT2003 in planetside tho, but i think both games use the same physics engine/system.

Remember the UT2003 one isn't really aimed for a realistic representation, it's tweaked to make a good show and really spectacular deaths.. it's abit overboard at times but really cool to watch hehe.

edit: forgott to add, from the looks of the vids i've seen the physics engine kicks ass!

I just watched the first video at GameSpot (the only one you can watch without paying) and it didn't look too good. The buggy went over an edge and didn't even try to do a little jump, it just followed the ground like it were glued to it. THAT, I do not like! I want jumps, flying cars, rolling and general carobatics!

Now, this was just the first movie ever from the game, and things could have changed since then (God I hope they have). You guys who have seen all, what do you think. Has it changed?

That movie is ancient, from E3 2001

Im wondering how graphics with weapons while you are moving will work. I mean if you throw a grenade out of a galaxy moving pretty fast (you probably cant do it just an example) throw it straight out will it continue going forward as it would in real life you just fall down same with missle and people who jump out of flying vehicles.
