Planet side, is it worth playing or TRYING?

Hi there, I am a new user to the forums, I have a friend (IRL) that plays this game, he parted from his TRIBES clan, and went to play this game, some of this team memeber wouldn't join him because of the typical reason.

"Is a FPS really worth paying 12.00+ for?" So he went at it on his own.

I talked to him on the phone, and he kinda gave me a pitch for it, and decided "What the heck, I'll give it a try!"
HE told me about the 7-day trail period in which you can try before you buy, you can download this at FILEPLANET.

Lo and be hold, the money grubbing scumbags have you there, you can't download it unless you're a subscriber to Fileplanet, and it's what. ...$6.95 a month, if there's another server where I can download this DEMO for free, it'd be great! Probably some leech or FTP site someone has up <shrug> BUt seems all links lead to the Fileplanet site from the Fansites I have noticed that this site doesn't have the "7 day trial" in the Downloads section.


So to add INSULT to INJURY, not only the ones that buy the game for 50 bucks at the store, and then waste money on it on a monthly basis, only to get bored with it a few weeks later...this game is probably no better than QUAKE or Unreal, which are pretty cool action packed games, that you can play for free online. And then when you get bored or just dont want to play them anymore, you didn't throw money in the toilet.

But EVEN the THRIFTY, budget consious people like myself cant even TRY THIS GAME FOR FREE??? Emphasis made on the word "TRY" here. :p

What kind of SCAM are these people running??

OH, and the cout de graut of all things, I was going to make a post about it in the forum about how it was lame that you have to subscibe to file planet to download the Trail...


AND GUESS WHAT... upon registering IN the forums....when you click on the NEW TOPIC Icon.
GUESS what... I get this message "You must be an PlanetSide subscriber to post to this forum"

Upon this experience, I based my conclusion that this game is NOT worth playing, I'm sure alot of you would probably agree if you were in my shoes just wanting to try it out...but man, I probably wouldn't play this game on principal.


Just my 2 cents, I'm sure alot of it would make sense if you were in my shoes wanting to try it out....

Find out for yourself, download the 7 day free trial from fileplanet or whatever, its free so no problem there...unless your on 56k, then you will noly be able to play PS when your 50 :D

No its not free, you have to be a "Paying" subscriber to Fileplanet in order to download it. $6.95 a month.

Tell your freind to give you the free trial that comes with the game. THAT is free and you don't need to download anything. :)

And IMO, Planetside kicks the living hell outta quake and , escpially, unreal. Just make sure you have the rig to run the game.

Yeah, I dont know if he downloaded the 7 day thing, I think he has the full game, so I dont know if he can download it and burn it to a CD.... :(

a seven day free trial comes with the game when you buy it. So does a month free of charge.

You don't understand, when you buy the game it comes with DISC FOUR. This is a sheet of paper with a key code on the back. All you do is insert the discs (1,2, and 3) install the game, and enter the code and you get 7 free days, no downloading.

Well I am sure in some time some dude who downloaded the 7 day trial from Fileplanet will put it on KaZaA so whatever....

Anyway I wasn't in BETA nor did I see many screenies, I came here jsut ebfore retail, read a bunch of topics, saw the information on the site, read the concept and just went with it, turns out its good so I have kept playing it :p

Don't have to play it to know these things, plenty of online games out there that a are free to play.....but a game really has to be worth it,

All I have to do is research it, and upon my findings, my suspicions were confirmed

And there's a difference between a troll and with a person who has actual insight and good ol' basic common sense like myself.

I mean think about it, if you have to pay to download the trial from Gamespy, you can conclude that this game isn't worth playing based of principal.

I mean what good is a game if you can't even try it out? That in itself brings myself to concluding that it's not worth playing.

There are plenty of posts on the Sony site about people cancelling out on it or complaints, and they are actual subscribers to the game.

And I've come to the conclusion there are no FPS's out there that are worth actually "Paying" for anyways. When theres a dozen or so more FPS's that are completely free to play online.

Granted I was swaying to "Giving it a try", but upon this "Not being able to download the demo" well, It pretty sums up the game as a whole, doesn't it?

I mean, its pretty pathetic that they would even charge you to download the trial.

They want what's in the wallet. :-)

The trial is free and the place where you download it from is not part of SONY, its not SONY thats charging, tis Fileplanet

Well, the FilePlanet charge is something altogether different, Sony doesn't see a cent of that. That's all Gamespy. However, if you have the money and you download LOTS of demos and whatnot a FilePlanet subscription can be worth it... they've got good bandwidth and no waiting.

Anyway, yeah, bug your friend for his 7-day trial.

Man, Hambone...when you're saying there's plenty of online games to play for free...sure there is, but you have to buy the game to try them, costs you 50 or 60 bucks. To download the 7-day trial costs 6.95, and you can download whatever the hell you want on fileplanet for a while. So really, this is cheaper :D

And don't give me that demo crap, a demo gives you a taste of graphics, maybe some of the physics engine, pretty much none of the storyline. These are all things you can find out by doing research and lurking boards.

I personally haven't bought planetside yet because of money problems (going to university is expensive as hell, lol) but i plan to get it before the summer's over, and if i don't like it, i lost 50 bucks. It's not all that much, and unless you went without food for three or four days (at which point you shouldn't be playing video games, you should go out and get a job if you can, or a better one) there's really nothing to bitch about.

And like someone else said above...you have a friend that plays, go to his house and play for a couple hours. You get a general idea and can base your 7-day trial buying on that. After you try it for a while if you really like it buy the real thing. If not....quitcherbitchin :p

Anyone with an once of "good ol`common sense" knows that it's impossible to comment on a game you haven't played and say anything meaningful. It's easily the best game so far this year IMHO, and guess what.. I've actually played it ! :eek:

As to Fileplanet, I think you'll find the charge has more to do with them than Sony.. they manage their servers fairly carefully, and there's a lot of stuff that gets made available to subscribers and then to the rest. Most serious gamers subscribe, anyway.

And of course they want "what's in the wallet". Just the same as every other games publishers and indeed any other business in the world.

Get your friends install CDs. Install the fucking game. Set up your account with the trial key you get from your friend. If you can't get them from him for some reason have him set up a server and download them from him. Logic is good, but basic problem solving skills are much better.
