People keep saying that there will be a limit of 64 players on the screen at one time. Is this true or not? Why 64? It would seem the number would be dependent on a number of factors, from bandwidth to graphics card capabilities to the amount of information they are planning on using per visible person. So what's the real deal here? Anyone know?
It would seem to me that an artificial limit on visible players would lead to some strange situations - if they allow 400 people per continent, it stands to reason that there will be situations where more than 64 will be in one place (warp gates are one good location for high concentrations of players). Whether this will happen frequently or not, who can say. But how would you possibly enforce a 64 player limit? Would some players just not appear? Would you be prohibited from entering certain areas of the map? Or what?

Sorry for all the questions...just curious.

I quote:
"Lag was not an issue during this particular game. At one time there was a bit over 100 people in the game all trying to take one base. Of course 100 is a fraction of what we will see upon beta and release, when there will be well over 1000 people on a server. This is obviously a big concern to the dev team and i think they have done a very good job managing the netcode."

This quote was directly taken from an in depth preview from one of the staff from PSU that was invited to play the game along with other journalists from around the country, from around the world.

Now if this isnt proof enough that there can be at least 100+people on screen at once, i dont know what else will prove to the nay sayers otherwise. Sure a part of this 100 people could have been on the other side of the base. But you cant shoot those people anyway, so there is no need to see them. But it is possible for more than 64 on screen at once, from an eye witness account. Please let this be enough proof to you!

cocob2...yes...we do this already. It's called "occlusion" and it works very well. It's often a trick which costs more...drawing the object or figuring out whether it should be occluded or not...but it works very well for doing things like deciding whether or not to draw a building that is blocked from view by a hill.
