Ok, I had a thought last night :)

Substations, between the bases there are physical connections not visible in game but on the map/minimap we could replace those godawful lines to something more terrain hugging like.

Along these lines there are substations.

to hack an enemy base joining onto your base you hack each substation to your empire then proceed onto the main base.

Obviously these stations wouldn't be a CC in the middle of a road or field. They could be in bunkers (improved bunkers ;)) in stratgic places, perhaps three of these between bases that are far apart and as little as 1 or even none between close bases.

If the attackers get a hack at the base the defenders can perhaps hack any of the substations along the lattice to cut the link and immediately stop the hack, the base will revert to the defending empire immediately, the attackers would then have to search each substation for the cut link (if they werent already defending the area)

Also a nearby tower could be used as an emergency link, you would need those nanite towers in the towers to make it work and once the hack is complete but the link isnt up still from the substations you then have 5 minutes to reconnect the main lattice link to stop the base suddenly becoming neutral (meaning another hack)

Could give the defenders on the continents time to organise a large counter offensive on either the bases/tower or substations to prevent the capture of the base.

Sorry for another "Taking the fights outside the base" but I guess its escapism :) and when I am bored at work I dream up stuff Id like to see in the game :D

Yeah, people on the official board are proposing this as an alternative to the (f00ked) LLM idea. I defenitely prefer the landline idea.
