why cynical of "the system"?

brought joy and happiness? i dont think that was the intention and he was picked on it very badly. it said that he had to go to a therapist about it, it hurt him so much. his parents sue and they're "milking the system"?? no.

i'm not, i was just using it as a word. it has no alterior meaning beyond referring to the system of law and order and lawsuits.

not the intention, but it happened. i'd be thrilled if people would laugh at something silly i did. i'd be a bit embarrassed, yes, but everyone has done that before. this is not a one-time occurance.

that's pretty rediculous. if he were constantly being taunted about it in real life, then, yeah, maybe, but typed words by anonymous people on a computer screen?

he recieved $4000 and an i-pod from kind people already and was made into a mini internet star. if he really has deep emotional scars about this, i doubt more money is going to make everything all better. it'll die out eventually and no one will remember him.

I'm not sure how it's funny, but somehow it's hilarious. The kid should have gone with it and said he just did it as a joke. Sure it's embarassing, but can any of us say that we haven't done something stupid like that before. The only difference is that in his case a bunch of people he'll never meet saw it.

Except for the 14 year olds out there who weren't alive when the original 3 star wars came out, I remember playing like I had a lightsaber when I was 11 or 12. My friends and I thought it was the greatest.

I also remember a friend getting his parents camcorder and us playing soldier and that kinda crap. Stuff that would be hilarious now to watch, but back then if older kids all started picking on me, it woulda been hard to take. The kids probably not older than 12 or 13, maybe 14.

Although the thing is funny as hell to watch, I understand why he did it, he was probably trying to do one of the star wars fan films you see on force.net, maybe it was his first try.

To relate it another way, what if your wife/girlfriend taped you in the shower, funny to her and you but then your neighbor steals it, puts it on the internet and then the whole country makes fun of you, constantly teasing you. That would be hard to take as an adult. To that kid his school was like his world, the whole school was making fun of him.

The money he's getting was after the fact, it was raised to help him in whatever way possible. Fact of the matter is that they stole property belonging to him, and then exploited it. Can't blame the kids parents for suing, surprised they aren't asking for more.

Bottom line:

Tape is funny as hell.

Feel very bad for the poor kid.

They'll probably win easily in any court.

Happy lil Elf
2003-07-30, 10:29 AM
No, he won't win easily in court, although if I remember right he lives in Canada and I'm kinda iffy on their law system. They did not "exploit" the tape. To exploit something means to take advantage of something for your own gain. They posted something funny on the internet.

Have you thought about why it's funny? It's funny because this kid did something we all do, but got busted. He made no bigger ass out of himself than anyone else has at some point when you thought you were alone. But this guy taped it, bad idea.

His life is not over. There have been people picked on worse than this kid and they walked away fine. The difference is it probably started overnight. That'd be a hard thing to face, but it's not something that will mortally wound him for life. It's not like he went to school on monday and faced dark jedi who believed they had to stop him before he realized his true power and chopped both his arms off.

In short, words hurt feelings, but suing over you doing something dumb and getting busted is idiotic and greedy.

2003-07-30, 10:59 AM
Didn't he do that at school tho? Using the schools camera? If thats the case, I don't think he'll win. If it was his camera... his tape.. that would be another story.
