You guys have never let me down before - I need a good cable modem.
I'm switching from DSL to Cable, and I need a really good modem. I can get a Motorolla SB5100 for 60 bucks from Charter (the ISP) but I'm guessing that's not too hot.
What do you guys have or suggest?

Why are you switching from DSL to Cable?
This is a good modem (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=18&manufactory=1566&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1) for a good price.
$64 at newegg.com
Edit: They also have a nice Linksys modem (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=18&manufactory=1413&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1) for $83

So that *is* a good modem? I know shit about cable modems.
My DSL access here is shitty, on that test the other day I got 570kb/s and I pay as much for it as I can for a 1.5mb connection with cable.
So actually, I save 5 bucks, get a free month of service, and 1.5 is better than my 500ish I get now for more money. Plus I hate alltel.

Ooops sorry! I missed the Motorolla SB5100 part. Motorolla is a good modem.
2-way means its a duplex modem(which today everything is a duplex). 42.88 Mbps mean that since cable limited bandwidth is depended upon local user this modem supports as much bandwidth as you can handle.
You have Alltel DSL? Hmmm....do you live in the mountain or some rural place?

Defintely go to broadband reports. I think the Motorola is pretty good. I don't care for 3com's. I use a toshiba and it gets the job done nicely.

I work for a reputable Phone company. Will with hold the name here. The actual alltel DSL service you recieved probley came from my company anyways. I will tell you something about it from here. We can only guarentee 256 kb/s on standard adsl. The reason for that is loop quality and make up. ADSL can and will run at a higher speed than that. It all depends upon your location in reference to your Central Office and the quality of your Facilities. Customers have been know to get a much higher Download speed, i.e. 1.5 Mb/s. As I said though we can only guarantee 256. The Bandwidth on a cable modem is much, much, much, much larger. It isn't regulated by the goverment like ADSL is. I have A toshiba modem from Time Warner Cable. It is wonderful. Got it instead of ADSL due to it not being available in my area. The Cable Modems work great until high traffic times for your area. They can slow down to way below your old ADSL speed. Your ADSL was your own connection, It wasn't shared with everyone in your neighberhood. If I were you I would go with the Cable Modem they provide, they probly guarentee it.

Lol...I also work for a reputable Phone company in the SE. I love my DSL then again I don't have any trouble on my line and I get way over the 1.5 speed. Oh, and I get a hugh discount too.:D
