Well looks like he came today.
My brother is hosting a japanese kid for two weeks. It turns out he doesn't know english well and not a big talker. So I tried asking him something in a simple way and he didn't understand! AHHHH! Anyone know of ways to communicate with a poor english speaking person?

i was over at a friend's house once, and i was going to the bathroom. i forgot to shut the door all the way, so the two female japanese exchange students staying there walked in on me just as i was relieving myself on the toilet bowl.

i now pray for abs every single night.

oh, yeah, that'd be awesome. But don't use hand signals, you might flip him off by mistake. You know, it's like a thumbs up.

People from other countries can always understand you better if you shout at them... and occasionaly slap them...

Sorry, in Europe, getting bored.

The best thing I could tell you to do is use the most simple words you can, and leave off any extra words that you can to get the same meaning across...

Not to sound like a retard, but instead of saying "leave off any extra or useless words" say "leave extra words." He will get the idea, and if you are not great at another language you can get very overwhelmed when 5-10 words come at you at once and you have to think one by one what each one means.

And if his english is still not good enough then you are screwed, he should not have went to a country that he does not even have basic language skills in. I may go to France because I can speak enough french to understand what people say, but I won't go to Japan and expect to speak when I only know 20-30 phrases at most.

Hey I think I'll try that. Seems a lot more effective at getting the point across as opposed to the softy way the others said :p

Honesty

Write things down. When I was in Japan I found very few people who could speak or understand but most could read. It's odd I know, but I swear it works.

And if not,

Remember, you have a hideous American accent to this guy. If he knows how to speak some English, he will have a harder time when he has to deal with the fact that you say the same word differently than he does. If you write it out, accent and pronounciation are taken out of the picture, and he should hopefully be able to communicate with you a lot more easily.
