Well, I just started reading Dune for school, and the first few pages are mind boggling.

What the crap is a bene gessert or something like that?

What're all these crazy made up words, and are they like that throughout the whole book?! Who's that old woman that looks @ the kid...

ahhh... I heard so many good things about this book, but it looks like it will be a ..'weird' read if there are all these weird words...

I've never read the books but I've seen the movie. I believe a bene gessert is like a witch.

Well I personally think Tolkien's stories were better. And then I'd say Dune is second. But that's just my opinion.

Check for a glossary in the back. Most Dune books carry them nowadays.

The Bene Gessiert (hell if I know how it's spelled) are an order of "witches", for lack of a better term.

?

No offense, but it never seemed complicated to me. It is a great book, one of my favorites. Just keep going, I am sure it will make sense (sence, sense, spelling?) eventually.

If you have to, you can just read it again.

The old movie sucks.

Anyway, the Bene Gesserit are just basically a type of futuristic witch.

oh cmon! the old movie was good! just cause it dosent have the flashy grafix. ill admit the new mini series was damn good, the one based off of the new books, and ill admit the new Dune movie was good, but i still think the old movie was good too

The movie was condensed into a pile of shit that amde no sense. The ending would've destroyed Dune and it just generally was badly made

Dune is not an easy series to read. I've read them all and loved them.

The Bene Gesserit are a school of women. They have trained in the arts of deception, manipulation, perception, and mastery of their bodies. They carry with them all of the memories of their past female ancestors (once they become a Reverend Mother, the highest rung on their ladder). They are dependent on the Spice in order to have these abilities, which they are addicted to and would kill them if they were cut off. They selectively breed their children (which are always females with red hair), trying to produce the Kwisatz Haderach (a male Bene Gesserit). It was forbidden for a Bene Gesserit to have a male offspring (or to have children at all) unless specific permission was given. Lady Jessica had a son, Paul Atredies. She had to train Paul in the way of the Bene Gesserit because she knew that one day they would come for him. The old woman is the Head on the Bene Gesserit. She came to test Paul and if he failed, she would have killed him.

The dune books were good but i think the first four are the best ones. The others i didn't like as much. Also the new prequels writted by the author's son are execellent although not as deep as the other books. Its still the best seris of books ive ever read though.
