View Full Version : I love sniping.

Sniping is now my favorite thing to do in planetside. I love the feeling of power I get from watching my enemies squirm on the ground below me. I think sniping is a very psychological game. Even if you can only damage your enemy, you force them and everyone around them to be a lot more careful. If they stay still for even a second they have to fear my bullet. I encourage everyone to give sniping a try. You might find it very enjoyable.

it is, but i dont get the psycological part, all i do is, point and click, i mean, why shoot infront of them to scare them when you can kill them? i dont get it

I am saying if you get one shot off and cant hit them a second time, you have them pretty freaked.

Actually, it just pisses me off. I'm an engi/medic and have no problem using surge to take cover, repair and heal up - then go hunt for your ass :D Most snipers and not too bright, and will stay in one position, ever after they start taking fire. I love running up with my Glowing Knife of Doom and laying into 'em, even tho I am in reinforced and carrying a thumper+deci.

try it...some snipers are good at fireing it up close and getting ya, ive killed alot of people with my sniper rifle at 5 meters, hell, one time, i was running towards the CC of a base, got 3 kills, though 2 were infuls...

sniping is VERY fun... although ive had my fair share of frustration from enemy snipers.

i agree it has alot of effect on the minds of the enemy as well. with my ozzman character on emerald i get tons of pissed off /t's from enemies ive whiped out.

I have a 50 shot snipe gear setup and ive had enough practice i can connect with about every shot. i could see how i could piss someone off.

Sniping is definitely the most fun to do in PS, but sometimes I get the feeling that it might be a bit too good. It can be too easy to kill people at a distance, sometimes -- especially stealthers. Makes me feel kind of guilty, because I know the people I'm killing probably aren't having fun getting sniped so much.

Warborn, that is the point. You want the enemy to feal helpless. That is very demoralizing and makes them fight worse.......... Wait, what do you mean this is just a "game"?

Warborn

No, no, I realize it does that, but I sometimes get the feeling that my demoralizing of the enemy is making the game less enjoyable for them. Eh, just rambling, nevermind me.

I find it extremely enjoyable. I'm picking up the cert with my main character when I hit BR9 tomorrow.

IMO; sniping is definitely *not* too powerfull.
The number of times I've been killed by a sniper is low ... really low, actually. And that's even though I'm always in reinforced (thus slow moving) and I crough a lot to increase my aim (thus sit still; making myself an easy target for a sniper with an elevated position.
Whenever I get hit by a sniper (which doesn't seem to happen very often), I find cover, heal and repair up (engi/med), then just think "oh well, the CC is *inside* the tower anyways), and I just speed up my assault a bit more.

I have a br/cr 17/0 and a 15/1, and so far I have only met one single sniper who was able to kill me thrice in a row, even though I was aware of his approx. position all three times. He got a "nice shooting, mate!" tell from me.

Sniping....... As a cloacker, those guys are either a pain in the ass, a good deal of fun.... I hate to be sniped, just like that, and die.....

But....

I just love to walk form aside, climb that hill, get right behind the sniper, get that AMP right next to him and start firing..... most guys die without even bothering to stop sniping and try to stop me. sometimes they try, but usually fail :D.

Never tried sniping.... or maybe I did try it? In the beta, long ago... oh well, I love being a cloacker. When I'll get tired I might get me that sniper cert, who knows...

Sniping is one of the perfectly balanced aspects of Planetside, imo.

agreed!

I also enjoy good duels between opposing snipers both of us requiring the 12x zoom. Had one of those last night, both of us dodging around trees and rocks to hide our position and get setup for the shot.

I finally made the killing blow, but both of us earned a tell from the other saying nice fight.

Sniping is fin, but you know what is much more fun and far more demoralizing? A cloaker armed with boomers. I was camping an enemy spawn room a few days ago, and got 13 kills in under 5 minutes. Its great to see a bunch of TR crowd around an equipment rooom trying to gear up, then BOOM!! Since a single boomer can take down reinforced and MAX suits, it really shakes up their confidence.

Now snipering, done properly, can freak out the enemy. But lke was already said, too many snipers just sit in the same spot, making them easy kills for us infiltrators.

favorite thing to do as a Lightning driver is cirlce around and come behind snipers who are dumb enough to take pot shots at me. Was fun to do in MAXs too but you'd be suprised how many TR snipers carry Strikers :p

One time I was in my Skeeter fleeing the battle to repair when a sniper finished me off. He either had Adv targetting or he was a noob. Becouse nobody fires at a skeeter with a bolt driver.

Meh if I've got nothing better to shoot at I'll shoot at Mosqs and Reavers. Usually don't hit anything but it's a way to pass the time until some TR/VS wanders over yonder hill :p

Yes it can, you just have to make sure that the enemy is Directly over the Boomer.

Sniping is fun because its way too deadly, I have had my share of sniping in PS, but its also fun to go infiltrating!! The only bad thing is that, through a sniper scope, you can see any infil that moves an inch, crouched or walking, this is HELLA annoying for infils. I've been on both ends, ive been sniped crouching around in my infil, and ive shot infils. crouching around... :(
Its not FAIR!! :P

No, you just have to make sure that the enemy is injured before they reach your boomer. A fully healthy MAX can not be taken down by a Boomer, even if he's doing aerobics on top of it.

yes but 2 mines (conventional and boomer) placed next to each other will kill 'em at close range. It's a favorite tactic used by my outfit.

A proximity mine that goes off will destroy a boomer that is placed next to it, and a boomer going off will destroy a proximity mine placed next to it. I suppose that theoretically you could detonate the boomer at the exact moment that the proximity mine goes off, but I can't imagine it would be successful very often or be a 'favorite tactic' of anybody.

Or, you could use 2 boomers and a jammer grenade.

I've taken out maxes in the spawn room, right after they spawned and put it on, with a single boomer. Please explain.

What's to explain? Test it with friends. If you've taken a MAX out, they were injured. Squad up with somebody to eliminate the grief, find an abandoned base and have them stand on your Boomer. Detonate. Watch your friend still standing there, very hurt but still standing there.

LOL. I just tried out sniping last night for the first time. I think I am going to love it. I just need to get a Bas or AMS. I had to run everywhere. Oh that sucks, I got 3 or 4 kills though. Two of them was the same person. Hehe. I guess he was a glutton for punishment. :p I amazed I got that many kills last night. That's how sparse it was. Are we losing the PS community? I sure hope not. This game rocks. Okay I am babbling/digressing. Anywho, I may keep it (sniping cert) for a while. What's the best combo (vehicle/other certs) for sniping? Some say a Reaver cert is good...quick get aways and such. I was thinking of either an AMS or Basilisk. What do ya guys think? I like the AMS idea beacause you give a spawn pt for others. The down side with the AMS is that you stand out like a sore thumb (not a good thing for a sniper) and most people stop what they are doing to destroy those bad boys. I know I do :p Also I like the Basilisk idea for getting to those hard to reach places and getting from place to place quickly. What's your guys opinions/choices?

I'm a bit of a newbie, and I just finished the 7-day trial.

The first thing I did when I hit BR2 (by trying different weapons in the VR training ground) was cert up for Medium Assault and Sniping. After creating an inventory favourite (I always try to get a general grasp of the shortcuts in games) I pressed checked the global map for where the action was, HARTed in and started sniping.

My sniper char Spie (http://myplanetside.station.sony.com/character.jsp?charId=615690&worldId=3) got 119 kills over the course of 3 days and about 15 hours of playing.

What I did was cert for a mosquito as soon as I could, and take off from a nearby base or the sanctuary depending on convenience. When I got to where the action was I quickly surveyed where the enemy was approaching from in case of attack, and if they were defending--where the best sniping spots were.

My loadout was 1 clip of ammo for my AMP and the rest bolt driver ammo. I didn't bother with med kits as I figured I'd be dead meat without any medic cert if I got spotted anyway.

I tried to vary my positions as much as possible, but after killing 5-6 people, or not even that, I invariably had an aircraft, usually a reaver, come kill me. In case of sniping in the thick of the action, it was usually an infiltrator.

When I reached BR6, I got the advanced targetting implant, to better get those one-shot kills.

At the end of the third day I had gotten pretty intimate with the timing of the rifle vs. distance and was able to pick off moving targets about 50% of the time.

Infiltrators are of course the most fun to kill :) Seeing that vague outline, waiting for them to stop and disappear visually before you fire at that spot, wait a second and see their infiltrator suit appear as they collapse like a sack of potatoes. Pure bliss.

I killed 2 friendly infiltrators at 300m as well. Very hard to avoid that it seems

Currently, I'm studying, so I won't buy the game immediately now. Perhaps in my semester break. Who knows. It is pretty interesting*

If I do start playing, sniping is where it's at. I also had a VS lasher char just to see what the fuss was about, but I much prefer being a sniper.

Hey Jman go with the basilisk you can load up the trunk with ammo and medpacks if ya need to...

Oh and i guess i'll post my funny kill...i pissed a infil off really bad i was watching him and he hid behind a rock...so i shot and killed him...i hit him in the foot...and then i got the angry tell and so on and so forth..

EDIT: also i got somethin i didnt expect..i killed a friendly infil accidentally so i sent him a tell sayin i was sorry..and he sent me a tell sayin "dont worry about it i get that all the time." that's the first time ive ever had one take it lightly..i wish all infils were like that.

Snipers have taken me out before, friendlies that is. But it only happens becouse it's crowded with both friendlies and enemies. It's kinda frustrating but I just /tell them to watch their fire in crowded areas.

Edit: FYI, I'm not an Infil :D

That's my normal response if I get a sorry, although I think it's messed up to snipe a friendly and not say sorry.

I had two TK snipes of note....

one the other day, I had an NC in my scope, trying to follow his movements while he was fighting one of my guys...

and i finally got a lock on him...

and a half second before I pulled the trigger, the NC ran right behind my guy, and I hit the VS guy hard.

i promptly apologized, and he said it was ok, and ended up joining my squad.

second was this morning...I had my scope aimed right into a doorway..and I saw a stealther running around the tower i was aiming at..so i waiting a few moments and debated... "is he friendly? or enemy? shoot? don't shoot?" i decided to take the chance, and I plugged him.....and then grimaced as the Grief buzzer sounded. again, i promptly apologized, and explained that i didn't know whether he was friendly or not. (i prolly shouldn't have taken the shot anyway..i know better now)

oh..and the shot i am most proud of so far? I headshotted an Cloaked Infil running up a hill at almost a full radar away(I was inside a base, and he was running towards a tower that was a LONG way away..maybe i exaggerate a bit, maybe not). I guess he was running from someone and was damaged, because i killed him with one shot.

prolly pure luck, but i am still proud. :)
