I just got the answer from Sony On-Line chat just in case anyone else wants to know the answer. The agent said that there is no way to change a player name once you start playing.

Judging by your name i'm guessing your female, if that's the case, run, run away, quickly! :)
Jk, welcome to PSU :)

Thanks for the help, Hamma. I'm just going to start over - I didn't get that far into the battle ranks anyway. Appreciate it.

Personally, I've had a TERRIBLE time with names in PS. It IS in the CSR's power to change a player's name. It IS ALSO against their policy to do so except for a few exceptions.
For instance, if your name was offensive (e.g. "SatanRulez"... Ok that's a MILD one compared to some I've seen), they might change your name to "HappyGopher". Just ask the outfit formerly known as the "Republican Guard". They were renamed to "Young Republicans" when someone /appeal'd their name due to the Iraqi Republican Guard. They CAN do it.
I've been /rename'd once. For some reason you cannot create a character with the sub-word BRO in it. Imagine my surprise when I couldn't choose NCGBigBro. I created a character named NCGBig and did a /appeal to get my name changed. It was the first day, so the CSR was cool and did it for me.
Apparently it was a COMMON thing for people to change names all the time, and they didn't want to do it for just any reason. I tried to create a character named "AGNBigBro" and couldn't. They refused to rename me. I was told by Tom Lockhart (head CSR team lead), that they will only do a /rename if the original name had been changed by a CSR because of an /appeal. Otherwise, the answer is a flat NO. Even for my case, where the name filter is broken.
So........ Sorry qtprincess. Just choose another name.
