Does anyone know what it takes to become a fighter pilot? How hard is it to become one?

letter of recommendation from a congressman, near perfect grades, absolutely no vision impairments, and absolutely perfect shape

Man, it is more rigerous then I thought. Does that include things like bomber pilots, transport planes, helecopter pilots etc. or just the people who fly the fast fighters?

i'm going by the navy carrier pilots

and yes, they only accept the absolute best of society

i believe they began accepting female applicants as well in the past few years

the letter of recommendation from the congressman is a HARD thing to get, probably one of the hardest things to accomplish on your way to fighter pilot-hood-dom-ness whatever

Umm no. You need 20/20 or better vision, and you have to be in good shape, but they could give a shit less if you have a letter from a congressman. It has nothing to do with it. In fact, the last thing they want to deal with is some beaurocrat asshole watching them.

Most branches you'll need a 4 year degree, because you have to be an officer to fly. The army (Warrant officers program) you don't need to be an officer, but you'll also end up in a chopper most likely.

Going to an acadamey (any of them) and graduating in the top 2% is the only way to be gaurenteed a certain plane.

The marines are the only branch that gaurentee pilot's positions, however, they also expect more from their men.

You do not have to be short, however, you must be below 6' to fly fighters. You can be up to 6'5 and fly bombers or support aircraft.

You get your plane based on your skills in testing. If you suck you get a C5. If you're great you get an F22.

If you have more specific questions let me know, I'm sure I can answer most all of them. I'm a pilot now, and next summer I leave for Marine Basic to enter the PLC program, where upon graduation I'll be a 2lt, then go off to TBS for 6 months, then down for 2 years of flight training.

You're also locked in for at least 8 years.

Yeah, like I was saying, you need a degree for every branch but the army.

You're probably thinking of how to get into West Point, Annapolis, or the Airforce Acadamy, where you need to be nominated by a congressman. Which, if you get in the top 2% at any of those places you're then gaurenteed any plane you want.

You need a letter from your congressman if you want to go into the respective Academy.

As much as I despise choppers, I am going to try and score as high as possible to get a shot at Marine One. How fucking bad ass would it be to fly into the White House every morning?

I was at Offut on 9/11 and saw AF1 with Bush and the gang on board. I'll never forget it. Or his escort. Those were American badasses. Talk about on top of their game.

If you want to fly choppers at all, and don't have a degree go Army. If you want to fly choppers and fuck up untold amounts of people - go marines (of course, they're trying to fuck you up too). If I wanted to fly choppers, I'd go army. They've got the best and the most. If you want to ferry people around, go navy or marines.

Was going to go be a SAR swimmer, but those guys were crazy. I'd call them marines except they can swim.

This is the Toasted Frogs truth: When I was in AirCrew School our class had 15 marines. Not a single one of them were present when I graduated. They couldn't pass their swim quals.

Are you shure about that 6 footer rule on fighter pilots, Nav? Why have a rule like that? I am only 14 and I am already 6 foot. I had better hope I stop growing soon. What do they do with people who are exactly 6 feet tall?

Navaron
2003-08-09, 01:45 AM
Ahh, I forgot you were a Navy man. Yeah, SAR is for crazy, ballsy people. Those guys are real heroes, and so are the pilots. If you've got the sack for it, do it man.

"Not a single one of them were present when I graduated. They couldn't pass their swim quals."

I believe it.

"Are you shure about that 6 footer rule on fighter pilots, Nav? Why have a rule like that?"

99%. You may want to call a recruiter and ask, but I'm pretty certain. What it has to do is with the cardiac system and blood flow under high g, high stress environments. If you're really tall, there's a lot more blood escaping your torso, but if you're short, it's staying in the torso better, and gets back to the heart and head quicker. Women have better bodies to be fighter pilots than do men. THat's why men have to be in such great shape.

Well, I had the chance to sit in the #6 Blue Angels F-18 Hornet my last year in the Navy. I was 6'3" and I barely fit inside the aircraft. The Blue Angels fly with virtually no avionics on board; they rip out all the fire control radar and associated hardware too. They only have basic Nav and Radio to get from Point A to B. The height rule is only for fighters. You can be 6'5" and still be a pilot. The military still needs transports and support planes as well. There is no shame in not being a fighter jock. Most ppl wash out of ACM training anyway.

I was playing a LAN game of Janes Fighters Anthology with my brother a number of years ago. And he'd always whoop my ass with F-22's. Like 3 games in a row.
So I took him on with the A-10's. 10 on 10.

Yeah just saying some of the people might find it weird cuz everyone wants to be a fighter pilot. I knew a few years ago I wouldn't settle for anything below the Raptor :D. But now I'm beginning to enjoy living more and more :P so I'd rather stay out of harms way. Plus I still get to be important, shipping M1s and stuff. Fun.

This page should show you a little bit about Navy SEAL training:
http://www.navyseals.com/community/navyseals/training_tadpoles.cfm

Some of the stuff I've read about SEAL training:
5.5 mile swim

14 mile run

Have to be able to take your equipment off underwater, and then put it back on again. This basically requires holding your breath for around five minutes, all while putting on a lot of swim gear.

Hell week, a week of extreme physical training where you only get at the most 2 hours or so of sleep. They let you sleep in a pit, but while you're supposed to be sleeping there's machine gun fire, and the sound of grenades going off around you, getting a lot of sleep isn't likely.

GonePostal
2003-08-10, 11:31 AM
read that

and i was kinda right, you have to do a under water swim with your hands tied and your ankles tied together, they call it drown proofing, and if you do pass out then they have to revive you.

Kaltagesta
2003-08-10, 11:39 AM
you guys hered of the bleep test?

we do it here in england at school, in PE. basically, they set up a cassette in the gym and you have run on the beep, to the other side of the hall, and get there before the beep, then immediately turn round and go back before yet another beep. This goes on for ages, satarted at walking pace, but builds up and builds up until you can barely make it even if you were sprinting from fresh, but seein gas how you have been running backwards and forwards for 20 minutes already - its hard.

i'm reasonably fit and i can get 11. My friend who runs cross country for the borough can get 15 [we are both 15 years old] fat kids get like 6. and to get into the SAS? You have to get 22. i mean, thats like an hour of running, and by the end, you are running VERY fast.

i know that the training may be more for a mental thing, and just to weed out the weaklings, but i wonder how neccessary it is, in practical terms, to be able to swim 5.5 miles? i mean, are you liekl;y to use that in the field?

GonePostal
2003-08-10, 11:55 AM

you might use it in the field but its also so that you know that you can push yourself that hard. its like a mental thing

wow. this is one of the final stages of SAS application: [a real quote from a book]

"The third week included a fully equipped run up and down the steep slopes of Pen-y-Fan three times in under 8 hours............ each day involved not less than 15 hours of marching so sprains and blisters took a heavy toll.
Finally, less than 30 applicants survived the final test known as Long Drag.
This was 45 mile cross country bash carrying a 50 pound Bergen (checked without warning by the staff) 12 pound belt kit and 18 pound rifle without a sling. The exercise is the equivalent of 3 consecutive marathons when steep terrain and the burdens are considered. If you take over 20 hours to finish you are failed. And sometimes, for no given reason, some of those who succeed are failed anyway" Ran Fiennes, from "Living Dangerously".

SEAL training is.....well I was going to say hard but hard doesn't really describe it accurately. Impossible for the vast majority of the population probably comes closer. As for the 5.5 mile swim no you're not likely to make use of it, unless something goes wrong in which case your life could depend on it.

If I personally could do anything in the military I think it'd be a tank commander.
