View Full Version : Power Out Across Northeast
Strygun

Just after 4pm EST, power went out in many of the big northeastern towns, including NY, Detriot, Cleveland, Toledo, Toronto, etc etc etc...
No one knows why, but NY is having looters, fires, and fights on the street.
Tune into CNN or MSNBC or something, this is interesting.

They think the Niagra-Mohawk power grid went offline.

Damn. That sucks. They say it's not a terrorist attack. Imagine being the one in/on the subway. Here's what CNN reports:

so glad i dont live in nyc.
1- They aren't standing around. Some have no clue how to get home without subway system, the others know how but have to walk since subways are out.
2- Strygun what's your source? I've heard every that there was no looting or fires in NYC(well reported yet).
3-As of now they do not think it's a terrorist attack, for unknown reasons there was a power failure in a southern canada or new york system that caused a cascade effect and shut down the entire grid. Currently they are restarting the system bit by bit as it is a slow and complex procedure and "with a lot of luck power will be back up tonight".

Current word is that lightning hit the Niagra power facility causing an electron cascade knocking out power across several power grids. They insist it's not an act of terrorism. I have heard no reports of looting or fighting, nor fires. I walked outside in Ridgeood, NJ and thought someone had set off an EMP, it was spooky :-/

My first thought was an EMP blast too, then I realized how much mass media actually affects me. I gotta lay off of movies.

yeah, I posted this a little after it all started.. from what I heard, there was a fire at con ed (which there wasn't, then there was, then there wasn't..whatever) and the fighting was the people that got the CNN lady off the phone in the middle of her reporting.
the looting was from FOX or something..

At approxomately 1:35 AM power has come back across all of Staten Island. :D
With the ABC news program I was listening to on my portable radio all night, I'm honestly surprised there haven't been any suicide reports. What with the whole gloom and doom, "dress rehearsal for the end of the Republic" as they put it.
Not that they dont bring up some valid points. If one random weather event can knock out power for an estimated 50 million people, imagine what a real, calculated terrorist strike could do.

to burst your bubble, a lightning bolt is so powerful that we cannont yet replicated it, but the only thing that comes close to replicating it is a small nuke, it burns at 5 million degrees and has enough power to do what it did just yesterday, i dont think a terrorist can do that, mother nature is one strong bitch
BTW. a Nuke when exploding, is 1 million degrees, a lightning bolt is just as hot as the sun, the reason you dont see us all dieing and frying is because lightning bolts come and go so fast, and they never really strike someone dead on, but come close, thats why sometimes people live, but then there are times when it does come close to striking them head on and they will die

Not that i don't believe you but could you explain to those of us who don't know how lightning rods and other things often hit by lightnining survive after being hit by something that's as hot as the sun?

Not to mention those ppl that get hit by them (rare, but it happens) and live to tell about it.....

Nukes are nearly 500 times hotter then your guess...
http://people.howstuffworks.com/nuclear-bomb8.htm
At the hypocenter, everything is immediately vaporized by the high temperature (up to 500 million degrees Fahrenheit or 300 million degrees Celsius).
Lightning on the otherhand is about 53,000 Fahrenheit.
http://hypertextbook.com/facts/1999/DavidFriedman.shtml (still looking into more info on this one, that number seems way too low, but I know a lightning bolt is not 500 million degrees...)
