Games come, and fade. How long do you think PlanetSide will be crawling with people everywhere?
I think for a while now - like two more years. :O I dunno why I think that, I just do.

It'll be dead in less than a year if they can't stop the player turnover. But there is the freebie 7 day trial deal that might bring in a few new players but overall I would give it until HL2, Doom III, and EQ II all ship. Then it's on to the "next big thing" for everybody.

I wasn't expecting that :) Snorted Dr. Pepper all over my keyboard.
I give it a year though. I hope PS2 is better than the original.

I say, the game grinds to a halt over the next few months and the upcoming expansion http://planetside.station.sony.com/corecombat/ revitalizes it for a short time, maybe 6 months, after that I say its gone for good.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG! PIE!
It think it will be active for a lot longer. There are so many people playing PS right now its not gonna all end that fast. Also I so far I've found no reason not to renew my subscribtion when it ends.

There arent as many people playing as you think, there are a whole boat load, im talking sacks full, I mean crates and barrels, of players who are on the 7 day trial. And I doubt a lot of the subscribers will last much longer, hell do you know how many people were ready to cancel over something as ridiculous as the Lasher being a little over powered? And with some recent crash problems and what seems to be increasing lag even though the player base has been steadily decreasing, I bet the number of subscribers will continue to dwindle to almost nothing.

Hmm hard to tell....if they really start to go down in numbers, they can always combine some of the servers, like markov and the other west coast server, same with the east coast one.
I think the only time that I find it hard to find people online is like at 4am my time.

Uh, about the "not encouraging" part.
Ok, and the ass part. So sue me.

6 months maybe, with server consolidation like they are having to do with AC2. FPS games move on so fast that multiplayer HL2 is gonna be the thing, graphics in a different league, gameplay probably will be better, and seriously cool weapons!!!

nerf teh anti-grav gun!
oh, and dont forget all the HL2 mods - they are making it easy to move because they know that, while HL was a great game, it was really the mods that kept it alive - its still one of the biggest played online games even after 4 years or whatever.

well.....
I think that there will be a huge drop off once this month ends, with another huge drop off at the end of the next month to the point that it will cause a cascade affect and cause people not to play due to player count. The expansion will being a couple months of life back, but thats it.
so... my guess is that the game will be gone in about 4 months... (right around christmas).

the devs have said that they have plenty of things lined up for the next 2 years and beyond... uh.... yeah, ok.

 well at their current rate of getting things done, I can buy that they have 2 years worth of stuff their thinking about.
Platoons:1 month

"balancing and bug fixing": 1 month

1/2 Base defences: 1 months

"balancing and bug fixing": 1 month

2nd 1/2 Base defences: 1 months

8 months
and thats just with what they have announced assuming they work at their current rate of 2 vechs and 1 base change every 4 months.

They shouldn't even tell us about their "ideas" until they are sure it's going to come out soon, like a month. A good example of this is Platoons.

1-2 more months, , most people bought the game in the first month, bought a 3 month card or signed up for 3 with a CC, after the initial subscriptions go, most people wont be renewing
that and the uber l33t games like HL2 DX2 etc will also be hitting around then, furthur drawing people away
that and the dev team is trying thier hardest to drive us off without any other draws
2 months, huge drop in players, will probably have to combine servers
expansion hits, already low population spread out thinner, customary shitload of bugs
christmas, probably a goodly rise in population, or not, as the game is going to cost $100 because of the expansion, dumb move, should have released it in february

I'm gonna be very angered if this game goes down soon. Its like my favorite game out right now. Stupid sony needs to live up to their promises and lower the subscription fee.....I'm going to bring a shotgun to their face if they kill my game....

The answer is pretty simple, other than my fondness for pie, which influenced my vote:
It will last until another Massively Multiplayer Online Combat Game knocks it off the hill.
Until that time, it is in no danger of extinction.

With the way SOE is screwing PS right now with the fruity LLU system and bogus VS nerfs PS won't be around much longer. I have never been in a major battle involving the stupid LLU. What a waste of time. SOE could have been doing something constructive like giving the VS competitive Maxes or trying to fix some of the lag problems.

I'm not 100% convinced MMO subscription is right for FPS games still... i mean i could play MOHAA for nothing. Disposable income to me, but is it worth it to toher people?

Yeah, things take time. But now that they're revealing that they've been using their time to develop an expansion pack (cash grab) rather than implementing things that they've been telling us are coming and squashing existing bugs that doesn't mean all should be forgiven. The expansion pack they're describing is obviously very time consuming and has obviously taken a lot of time for them to develop.
We paid for the game, and now pay a monthly fee. The belief is that the fee is for new content and bug fixes (as well as server fees, etc.). Now we're finding out way too early that a lot of the promised new content and bug fixes have been pushed aside to rush an expansion out. Of course there are unhappy people. Every time I CTD I try to figure out what I'm paying $13 a month for. Somehow, every month I still renew because there seem to be enough positives to outweigh the negatives when push comes to shove. The more I think about this expansion and the unresolved current issues the more it pushes me the other way though.

I think it will last for some time as long as the dev's activly add new features and stay in touch with the community. Which they have been for the most part
