View Full Version : IRC Dev chat - The real info post

Bonnie beat me to it, but didn't really have all the details so I wanted to post something myself about the upcoming dev chat.
I am working with Dave Georgeson to bring him back to channel #planetside on gamesnet for a second Dev chat. We're still working out the details as to when, but to use Dave's words it will happen "soon". As with the last dev chat it will be run by myself on behalf of the PlanetSide community. Everyone is invited and in the spirit of it being a community event I will be lifting the channel bans for this event.
We are coming up with a list of questions to ask Dave. I would gladly welcome some suggestions from the people here at PlanetSide Universe, so feel free to suggest some here and I will check back to add them to the list. Keep in mind though that Dave is a busy man so choose your questions carefully. The rule I am trying to use is:
"If I could ask Dave only one question, what would it be?"
I hope to see everyone at the chat. I guarantee you it will be worth your time.

Hi, does a full galaxy with a pickup truck inside fit in a single squad?

Yeah, but how would you fit the Galaxy into them?

Med/Eng tool questions:
How long does it take to resusitate someone? Is it just "click-done", or is there some delay? Ditto for fixing broken equipment (turrets and terminals)
Once you've res'd someone, do they have full health, or will they still need to be healed further?
How much health is in a single med-tool reload, and how much does a res use? And does getting the advanced med cert make you more efficient? (ditto for engineering and the advanced eng cert)
How fast is healing? One-click-done, or health over time? Ditto for armor repair. I'm guessing health/time, but I'd like to KNOW.
Vehicle questions:
How are you handling the turreted one-person vehicles' controls? How exactly does one aim while driving (the Lightening) or flying (the Reaver)? I can see using strafe to turn the Lightening, but not the Reaver (which might be able to strafe on its own, as well as turn). I can see joystick + mouse, but what about keyboard users (poor wretches that they are).
How do you reload a vehicle's ammo? I've seen what looks like a "vehicle-ammo" tab in the inv term screenshots... is that it? How big are the reloads? Ditto for MAXes
Do turrets rotate independant of the vehicle their mounted on? Tank pilots in T2 had to learn "the art of HOLDING STILL!" (and I did) to allow their gunners to actually hit anything. There are modern tanks (Abrams for one) that does not have this problem. It seems logical for this tech to show up in PlanetSide's distant future. I can easily see this not being present for the buggy guns for example, and perhaps even the APCs', but I think the tanks should be a more stable firing platform.
What vehicle has the biggest trunk? Just how big is it? What vehicle[s] have no trunk space (atvs? maybe the mosquito?)
Certs:
Do grenades need certs?
Do vehicle gunners need certs? Ditto for wall gunners.
Has the cert tree settled down enough for you to tell us anything else? Particularly tank & reaver pre-reqs? (and please, do tell)
Weapons:
Do all vanu energy weapons take the same sized "battery"? I just can't see slapping something meant to power a lancer into a beamer. This implies to me that all a Vanu's power is drawn from their inventory, which would be a huge advantage for the Vanu's energy weapons. Such an advantage could be balanced by other factors, I'm just askin'.
What Vanu weapons have AP-AArm (anti-armor vs AAir) settings? We know the beamer can, and it seems safe to assume that the Lancer and MAX weapons cannot... but what about their assault rifle and orb-launchy-thing? Not to mention their buggy's gun and the tank's weapons.
What vanu weapons are beams vs projectiles?
What different kinds of ammo can be loaded into the punisher's gren/rocket tube? And how big is each reload in terms of inventory space? 1x1, etc...
Does AArm ammo affect infantry armor the same as it does for other "inanimate health"?
Command abilities:
Have the command abilities settled down enough to talk about them yet? If so, what can you tell us? We already know about the command chats, what ELSE?
Other:
BETA!?!?!
Have you got anything more on those nebulous "post CEP/BEP" awards for people who have maxed out their EP's? Are we talking badges (insert obligatory Cheech-n-Chong quote here) and medals and such, or what?
Is there any equipment that a MAX can use? Grens, hacking tool, anything?
How big are the various armor's inventory spaces? 3x5, 8x8, etc. Ditto for vehicle trunks. And yes, that DOES sound like something that could change during game tuning, I'm just curious as to what they are now. About.
That ought to keep 'im busy for a while.

Dude. I posted some questions. Thou shalt striveth to DEAL WITH IT. And if you think I'm gonna take back that whole fricken ESSAY, you got another thing coming!!! ;)
I think I'll just go with what the Hammster said.
That was just wrong. Hammster. Heh... Hehehhh...
Hammster.
(I'll be stunned if I'm the first one to come up with that particular joke, but it's still funny)

How do the TOW (Phoenix missles) missles work?
How fast are they, whats their turning radius? Is there a physical cable? If so when does it snap? If not, how long until the missile automatically becomes dumbfire by going out of range? What is that range?
It's not one question but it's one train of thought.

If your MAX suit is about to blow up, can you bail out of it? If so can you carry anything with you?
For example I'm in a MAX and it's getting hammered. I jump out and whip out my minigun and mow some people down while a friend repairs it, then I hop back in and kill people.
Is there a limit to how many weapons you can carry if your going to be in a vechicle? Full load out for a foot soldier, but not as much for a piolet?

"If I could ask Dave only one question, what would it be?" you can't just quote what you want and leave the rest.
And half your questions have already been answered it you bothered to look
for my Q,"Can you give us any additional information on the continental locks you have hinted about?"

Clearly what you need to do, Mr. Enema, is create a new set of PSU users and resubmit each question under a different username. The admins really smile on that kind of thing around here.
And, if we can start calling Hamma the Hammster now, does that mean next week we can call him Hamtaro and the other admins Hamhams?

Post as many questions as you like. When I said the thing about only asking Dave one question it was just my way of trying to get people to focus on really good questions and not spam this thread with 10,000 questions which could be answered through a little research.
And yes post them here.

A: No offense intended, and you do seem to have taken offense. I can't very well quote everything. And neither did you. You just happened to quote portions more relevant than i did.
On the other hand, I must have skimmed past the "one question rule" part. Doh.
B: I have bothered to look, quite extensively at that. I've followed just about every PS-related link I could find. I've got shortcuts to dev-post searches in my browser favorites. I get around. No, not like that, ya perv. That was in college. Married now. Grown up (welll... grown older), all that.
If you can point me to some new source of information (or an old one for that matter) answering any of my questions, then by all means, please do. The more info I can suck down, the happier I am. If ya can't... well...
BTW: I did notice that a Vanu screenshot showed someone using the orb-launchy-thing-whose-name-continues-to-escape-me, with energy cells. They had 50 rounds in the clip, and 250 in reserve. That squashes my vanu-ammo-straight-from-inventory delusion.
P.S. I liked your old sig better... something about people stumbling over your corpse as I recall. Funny stuff.
Airlift: Yes, I spell "enima" wrong. I know. Have known. I decided not to fix it, after someone showed me the error of my can't-spell-to-save-my-life ways. Thanks anyway. It's kind of like one of those situations where someone in the room has a giant booger hanging out of their nose. Do you mention it, briefly embarrassing them, or let it hang there staring back at you? Tough call.

The funny part is that I didn't even notice that you'd spelled it differently until I read your response.

This has no doubt been answered a hundred times, but everyone seems to be ignoring me. Can't really blame you but...
But is it possible to get a 3rd person view while driving a vehicle? I'd think that while driving a reaver or a tank you'd have an incredibly limited view which would give infinite disadvantages in 1st person.

Several of the old gameplay videos from E3 show the camera following a buggy in 3rd person. If I had to guess, I'd assume it was still in.

The new gamespot vids answered some of them, and a few of them were answered a while back. The ones i know are that health is over time, one vid has a person being healed, i am almost positive you don't need a cert for gunning and the punisher can shoot all three grenade types and what looks like a rocklet round, MAXs can't use anything. Alot of the other questions are impossible to answer because they are the sort of things that open beta is to balance. sry for having kindof a bitchy tone, but the tank statement just rubbed me the wrong way, absolute polar opposite to my technique, if the tank is dead, the gunner wont hit much.

Okay... here's a single question (to throw onto my pile :))
Is the Reaver's chaingun turreted? I've been laboring under the assumption that it is... but now I'm not so sure.
I guess it's just that when I think "gunship", a specific idea springs to mind, chin-turret machine-gun + missile/rocket pods/launchers/etc.
And I'll wager I'm not the only one, since a number of other people also thought it was a 2-man jobby. Makes more sense now.
Incompetent
2003-01-08, 06:36 PM
i would think it is fixed, the only way it would work turreted with one person is if they could pull of an apache style targeting system, which is basically impossible. I think it used to be a two man vehicle, in which case it would make sense for it to be turreted.

More info about the deliver and the sunderer!
How many passengers can they hold?
How many guns do they have? Also what kind?
What kind of coverage do those guns have?
How fast are they?

Or could you get on top of a tank and ride around on it? Can a max anchor on top of one? I know this sure wouldn't be very realistic, but are there systems in place to prevent this?
:D that would be sweet :D

Is there any difference between different empire's armors.
Example: Let's say that vanu scum medium suits are faster, but offer less protection than say, an NC medium suit? Makes sense right?
Can you bind yourself to somewhere on a continent, then just blow yourself up when you're on a different continent and you need to get there fast?
Why did you guys make those vanu scum, just plain suck?

5 and 10 for the deliverer and the sunderer, deliverer can hold one max and the sunderer gets 2.
They both have twin turreted guns, probably 20mm.
Almost total, the only blindspot is almost up against they hull
Faster then a sprinting MAX, otherwise there would be no reason to have compartments for them, other then that, noone knows.
