I been thinking about getting Planetside now that it's out but 56k is the only thing available to me currently, when I move next year I will get broadband. I'd like to know how playable this game is on 56k, games like Natural-Selection, Team Fortress Classic, and Day of Defeat run fine for me and to me a 300 ping is acceptable. I'd like the opinions of people here before I make this decision, thanks.

Thanks for the sympathy, I will take your well thought-out reply as a "no."

I'm open for second opinions.

Well lets see, I play on cable in australia, and as such am lucky to get 180 pings...

Now one of my good friends also plays PS, he plays on a 56k connection...in Australia... And lets just say PS plays very well for a 56k in a country half way around the world.

I've heard that if you keep your video settings on low, and stay out of huge battles, 56k is ok. But, I've only heard this. Somebody once said that they play with a friend in Alaska who is 56k.

My computer is a powerhouse alienware though, 3.6ghz 1gig rdramm, radeon 9800 pro, etc. but all i can get is 56k, any more opinions will be appreciated.

A buddy of mine plays 56k. Just stay out of the huge battles and it'll run. Can't tell you how well it'll run though.

yea that blows dude. you will be unhappy with the gameplay. i have cable and the lag does get bad sometimes. and you will often not receive packets from the server and this annoying screen somes up. but, you can try it. i'd rather play PS with lag than not play at all. Yes, it's that good.

Bah, stop giving 56K such a hard time. I play PS on my 56K modem and it is 100% playable.

Just stay away from the Giant Zergs of your own team, 100+ empire mates hanging around a base shooting the crap outa each other for fun really clogs up your modem.

I got avice from someone on the boards, I was getting super pissed off with having no one to kill because 90% of the time a base battle was really only 50 empire mates fighting 2 or 3 guys unlucky enough to spawn in that base.

I was told to studdy the map, look for where a small battle (a reall one not a zerg ) might break out or go recon and find one.

56K will play this game FINE, just avoide pointless zergs and have a gander at those single enemy bases on your empires conts.
ONE guy helping to attack those single ememy bases before they can get a foothold is worth WAY more than 20+ extra guys on a zerg push.

PS is all about tactics and using what you have insted of complaning about it. (hint hint people who whine about nerfs hint hint)

say i go into a normal sized battle, how many soldiers would there be and how would my 56k handle it, bare in mind i have a 2.53 ghz, 512 mbddram 128 gf4 graphix card (geforce 4 mx440) and a pretty good modem and most games it gets me 150-200 ping

Roughly 1/4 of a second.

When you get a feel for the game you can tell when you have unloaded enough led into someone's ass to kill him.

Battle size... uh... Iv never seen a "normal battle" I see Mega Zergs and Small skirmishes

Zerg 50+ sitting around doing nothing

Skirmish 10 - 20 guys duking it out around a tower or base

I was in a Zerg with around 40 TR holding a base ( no one to fight ) with a steady normal ping (200 ish)

When you get 40 vs 40 guys your ping will rise to around 4000. just leave and go fight somewhere else.

normal ping on 56k would be averagely 230, if you are in a moderatly filled area it'll rise to 400-600. if a zerg.......6000-7000.....lots and lots of fun!

man i want dsl.....:(

I can't wait for RDSL. That's Realtime DSL, FYI. And no, It's not out yet. *laughs* Best we can hope for is SDSL, which at the moment can only be gotten on the east coast of USA.

But I simpethize(sp) with you poor 56K Bastards. Be glad it isn't 28.8

And all these suggestions will work. Your game will play. But the more people together in a 200M radius, the slower your connection will be. I think it's after 200M that the game stops drawing things out. Not entirely sure.

PS: Alienware overcharges. I built my computer and a friend got his from Alienware with near the exact same specs. The only difference was, he paid $1000 more for the Alien logo on the case/keyboard/mouse.

Yeah buddy of all things to lie about I'm going to lie about specs my computer doesn't have, thing is my "Agent ID" paper they sent to me with my computer says Intel P4 3.6ghz (2). If it's a typo or what I don't know nor care, I own a powerful computer and am well-assured it will run PlanetSide on the highest specs. So how about instead of being a smart-ass and nitpicking at a possible typo you actually add something relevant to the conversation about playing on 56k? I'm sure they mean "3.06ghz" but out of habbit I've been saying 3.6, glad we have that all cleared up huh?

@TimberWolf2K - Thanks man, I'll be running out and getting Planetside as soon as I possibly can. Also you all mention "Zerging" - what is that? Is it just massive human-wave attacks reminiscent of the Chinese during the Korean war or some other thing I'm unaware of?

BUGGERGHOT
2003-08-25, 12:21 AM
switch the chinesse and korean and replace em with tr, nc, or vanu and yea, you got it.

lets just say its a shitload of guys pretty much raping an enemy base.

Are they on all servers or just certain ones?

Yeah you pretty much got it. Think, Normandy beach landings 20K guys running at bunkers filled with angry full auto machien gun totting enemies. Rushing up and getting killed untill the enemy a) gets bored or B) runs out of ammo

Zerg: Huge force of troops using 0% tactics to overcome a small number of enemies

It doesnt work, its lame and did I mention it doesnt work.

"uh oh, that base we just zerg rushed is being hacked!"
"Who cares, ON WITH THE ZERG! to the next base!"

Rinse and repeat

Zerg = Lose

It will be fine, you might have occasional lag but 30 people battling will be just about your ideal situation with PS. Your ping in very calm situations will be ~180, the battle you're describing will most likely jump it to ~250. You will without a doubt die in some situations because if your link, that's the price you pay.

As soon as you get caught in a zerg you will hate life with a passion. You haven't lived until you've eaten the 5 digit ping.
