View Full Version : Sniping

I'm thinking about picking the sniping cert back up just for fun. But last time I had it I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, much less kill an enemy.
Anyone got any tactics they'd be willing to share? Because ppl at veh terms are prime targets, but after firing the first shell, they hide and moments later I get a faceful of Reaver rockets.
Can someone help? Because I was an avid sniper in MOHAA and I loved it, because there were no bullet tracers, but now enemies can follow the bullet tracer right back to your position.
Any implant suggestions? I'm using Dark Light (thats a given), Audio Amp (to see enemies coming from behind), and Adv. Targeting, to pick off weak targets.
Anything you recommend to get? And which one should I drop?
I want to snipe, but I just can't get good.

Yea dude, dont shoot at veh terms, thats death wishing....
What you need to do is get a really good hiding spot, it dont matter if you ask to get hotdropped there, your a sniper, ur team needs you, get hotdropped or run to a place where you think is comfortable. I choose a hill where i can peak over and shoot at people, while having a tree or a rock close buy.
Also, if you dont already have engineering and/or medical, get atleast one, it will help a sniper stay alive MUCH longer.
Ask for assistance, if your spotted or you jsut want to stay safer, get a determined and loyal infil, to sit and spot for ya, that infil can give you info of where the targets are and whats coming to get ya. It helps alot!
You dont have to kill ur target, if you hit him, he is already weakned enough, if you cant hit him again, dont run around trying to hunt him down, just sit...

ps - when ur sniping... make sure your comfy in ur seat and you have a drink and food next to ya :P - it could get boring
Good Points JLeeAZN. Dont do the sterotypical sniper routine. You know the one every one has seen on TV and in other games. OHHH high ground out in the open highest point on the map good sniper point. wrong. That is the mostly likely place a anti sniper will look specially reavers. I tend to find the most out of the way hardest are to get to. not only makes a good sniping position but harder for the enemy to get to you. If it took me fifteen minutes to get into place you think an enemy is going to hoof it up that hill to get to me? NO probably just send in reavers and I'll already be hidden. Use a spotter. not alot of people do this. but it works. If you have a partner both armed with rifles you can rack up the kills. Dont worry about the tracer round. Ninty percent of the time in a hot battle that round wont even be noticed. It is sometimes and will draw fire on you but in most cases it wont draw attention. Try to shoot targets with their back towards you. Aim Small miss large. Aim large miss small. or something like that. Dont try to be fancy Gunny Hathcok. and hit them in the head doesnt do any more damage then a regular shot. hit them in the chest or back. If their back is towards you and you miss usually means you over shot and they wont be able to pinpoint you as easy as they didnt see exactly where the shot came from. Implants. I use the extend zoom one, dont remember its name. Medic and Engineer. I dont have either. Usually my partner is a medic or engineer or some one in my squad. and Most the time I'm so far out in front of my squad scouting it wont matter any ways if I'm hit or die as I'll just respawn with the squad and move on with them.

I personally think advanced targetting isn't that worthwhile as a sniper because it only works closer than I normally am from the enemy. I do think advanced regeneration is ideal as a sniper, you'll find that the majority of your fighting is with other snipers. Since you won't be doing a lot of running around and don't really have to concern yourself with saving stamina, you wait until somebody snipes you back, you drop down and click on your adv. regen implant and use engineering to heal up your armor. Take your time getting to a slightly different sniping spot and try to find the guy that hit you. 90% of the time he's still in the spot he shot you from hoping you'll pop your head up and he'll take you down.

Would combining a sniper with a infil suit be good?

Infil suit doesn't have a rifle slot, so you can't use the Bolt Driver.

Ahh yes, I feel stupid now, seeing as I'm an infil myself.

ahh that reminds me of the good ole days when infiltrators could use decimators :(
Here's what I use/am.
Implants: Adv. Reg.
Surge
Key Certs: Engineer
Sniping duh!
Reinforced
With the Adv. Reg + Eng. I'm practically invunerable against other snipers. Problem is when they call reavers or mosq. on your ass! Then I use surge to run to the nearest safe location. ie under a tree/rock, anywhere safe if possible. I used to have HA also. That was for cloakers and infintry that snuck up on me and thought they had an ez kill. Now I just use the sweeper, usually will kill them if not I can escape with surge from maxes. It works for me. Don't use the Adv. Targeting, it sucks. Who cares if you can see their health or not, chances are you wont see any1 stupid enough walking around with 50% health ne wayz. Aim for the chest, there isn't area damage anyways (as someone stated earlier). If your noticed MOVE! Thats probably the biggest problem most snipers have. Thats where surge is handy, I shoot, then if Im noticed I surge to diff. loc. when they poke out of their hiding spot they look at the spot where you were, uh oh, you moved! then you have a clear shot on them! Sry for the long post, just trying to help a fellow sniper out.
P.S. I love all you snipers! *starts to cry* Even you TR guys. ;)

Your lifespan as a sniper will be infinitely longer if you have the Medical cert. Not being able to heal yourself as a sniper will end your runs very quickly in most cases.
And, yes, while Advanced Regeneration can work, it works very slowly and drains you of stamina rather quickly. Not only that, but it takes an Implant slot which could be better used for something else. It is far more efficient to take the Medical cert and heal yourself that way.

I played MOHAA too, for 16 months. I got real good at every weapon, even rockets. When I first started PS I tried sniping. I really was no good at it. That's because I tried it like MOHAA, which I never stayed still for very long, hardly ever crouched. In this, you have to crouch all the time to snipe. I traded sniping in for Infiltration. But that was my first character, which I deleted. I've decided since that the best way to play my character is for Base Killing, Base Defence, or Running people over. And no, I don't have a Mag. I did, for a few days, but I gave it up for Hacking. I use ANT's to run people over.
The advice I can give, is don't stay in one place for too long, use a spotter, like these other guys said, have repair cert, and either medical, or lots of health packs, and reinforced armor. Use Surge and the X12 targeting. You are what that implant was meant for. I think. I've never actually used it, or used a bolt driver with it. My friend Maddad found that a sweet spot to hide is in tree tops near the base. However, a sniper might not like that. A Rocklet rifler however might find that a sweet spot. He did.

implants for snipers:
adv. targeting
audio
surg (for when your screwed)
I think its best to have a vehicle at the most 30 meters behind you, cause when you get spotted by a vanu MAX and/or a reaver, last thing you want is a mouthfull of rockets and barney food. I gota reaver and a atv cert so if i'm up a hill, i park the reaver on a flat area, if i'm somewhere not too far from the ground,i get a basilk (hehheh, i still cant spell it).
also i'm not in reinforced so i dont got another rifle to back me up, nor several medikits in my inventory. This makes vehicles much use for snipers, you could store medikits, ammo, nades, etc in the trunk (i put 3 medkits, some ammo boxes for sniper/handgun, and something from the enginering cert).
I think i should jsut get a galaxy, store shit into its bigass trunk, and park it on the tipsy top of the hill so everyone knows i'm there. man it be more usefull than an ams!:D
