Just a question for you all.
I recently got my roommate interested in PS and he decided right away he wanted to be a sniper. Do you guys have any tips/suggestions I can give him? He's been having a real hard time with the character. In the 3 days he's been playing he's only had 2 kills with the rifle, and 3 by running them down with his basilisk. Needless to say, he's not real pleased with the sniping in this game. The fact that the bolt driver is a single shot weapon and the shots are almost never 1 hit kills is really aggrivating him.

Well for one thing a Sniper who is just starting is normaly not the best shot. Secondly 1 hit shots at full heath are not in this game. When you do get a 1 shot kill the person does not have full heath (dua). If anything a sniper is one of the hardest things you can be in PS. You have to take your time for your shots.....you just cant go shooting at every person you see. Well you can but your not going to hit a person if you dont set up. I think your freind should first do Medium assult and get used to combat. Then switch to snipering

Be swift, be silent, be deadly.

No wait, thats for cloakers. I once killed 35 people with my bolt driver in one day so you could say that Im a fairly good sniper. I would tell your friend to look for a good place to hide while sniping(Trees, mountains, behind vehicles etc.) Most of all, you have to be very patient. One of the goals to sniping is not just to kill, but to weaken the enemy. I mean, when you have 25 health, you will usually hide and regain health(Not to mention you will be easier to kill) So, thats what I would say.

Well there are one hit kills, running people over and vanguard shells and enforcer rockets.

And and if you want to maybe you both could get sniping, that way if you both shot one guy at the same time he's dead. I've been sniped by a pair of snipers a few times, and I don't even know what happened until I see my dead body on the ground.

He should do the VR training and some MA until he is BR6. Once there he can get Advanced Targetting and start picking off the wounded, which will allow him to rack up the kills.

Another tactic is to sniper in pairs. Since I think 2 shots will normally kill a Reinforced Exo. This of course requires good communication, patience and the willingness to trade off kills.

What game was he a sniper in previously? I can tell him right now that sniping in PS is the hardest out of any game I've ever played. With saying that, sniping is still the shit. I'm glad its actually hard to snipe now. Any other game and its 1 shot kills and there isnt any or very little bloom on the weapon. As for some tips here are some basics.

1) Use cover. Croutch by a tree, a rock, anything where you could take cover.

2) NEVER camp yourself out in the open. Its just stupid, unless you like reavers and mosquito fire in your ass, then its ok.

3) If your shot, or shot at, its time to leave your postion. (Biggest mistake I see by my fellow snipers.) If they've seen your spot then A. They're coming for you. B. They're sending someone for you. C. And if they didn't do A. or B. then they are more stupid than you are for sitting there.

4) BE PATIENT. Dont get discouraged if you dont get the kill, on the first shot. The first shot hits, then the target begins to run or move awkwardly to screw you up. This is when you should hold your fire. Its the hardest thing to do, but if you dont, your stray bullets will give away your position. (see rule 3) Dont fire on the target unless he/she is an idiot and is running in a straight line. After you wait like 10 sec. without taking that shot, the target usually returns to the exact spot where he/she was. (Dont know why, but they do.) Then you take your kill shot. And if they dont return then you've successfully removed a enemy from battle, just as good as killing him......ok its not....but its still good!

There is so much more he has to learn yet, but thats whats fun about it. Hell, I'm still learning.

Just to keep his hopes up I have to tell him something. Ive been a sniper for awhile now, not just in PS either. This week I hot dropped near a tower battle with a TR zerg attacking it. I was in the hills, and got 4 kills in 5 shots! Thats incredible considering there isnt any 1 shot kills. It was freaking awesome. So just stick with it and it will come to you, slowly but surely.

Hope this helps. I'll see you around, through my crosshairs.....

picking of an infiltrator is fun, plus usually they are crouching once they get shot (to i guess be more invisible) and it is much easier. When i snipe i usually just follow them till they stop then shoot at them or find campers, if they are moving I try to get the smallest reticule possible and then hope it hits them.

Snipers in PS aren't the one shot wonders they are in other games. Good snipers in PS have my respect. It is by far the hardest character in the game to get good at. (Well, a good cloaker might be just as difficult to learn.)

Unless he has a lot of patience, he might want try being something else and be on the recieving end of snipers for awhile. You'll actually learn some things about them that way and then later if you pick up the cert you'll also know the weaknesses and strenghts of your targets.

Just my two cents.

Remembere to compensate for lag, distance and the time it takes for a bullet to travel. I usually aimed about 2-2.5 metres in front of the target.

Reinfoced was my favorite armore when sniping, since I used to different configs with either two sniper rifles and a pistol, or one sniper rifle, one gauss and plasma/frag nades. Medkits are also highly recommendable since you most probably will encounter enemy snipers too.

Some advice from a former sniper and PS player. ;)

I have been sniping for a while planetside. I think I am pretty good. I average around 5-10 kills per death. There are several things I have found that greatly increase my killing capacity.

1. Turn off flora on the video menu if you don't already have it of. That is the little bush things on the ground. I will tell you why in a min.

2. When you snipe, try to make as little of your body visible to your target as possible. Not only does this make it nearly impossible for an enemy sniper to hit you (if done right). It also makes you much harder to spot. This is why flora must be off. If you try this with flora on, it gets in the way of your sight and forces you to move up higher to be able to see.

3. Get engineering and medical. If you do get attacked, and survive, it is extremely convent to be able to find cover and heal up to full health.

4. Develop lighting fast reflexes, and be able to tell what is attacking you. If you are attacked by a cloaker or an enemy sniper, you need to react immediately and appropriately to the situation.

5. For leading a moving target, think abut firing when the enemy hits the outside of your cross-hairs. You of course have to calculate in speed distance and lag, but this is a good starting point.

6. Have patience. Sniping may be hard to get used to, but it can be one of the most rewarding experiences in the game. I have been with ps sense beta, and have tried nearly every type of character. Sniping is by far the most fun thing you can do IMO.

Hope that helps.

I have a good sniping tip for a VS character. This may seem left field, but give up Sniping, get Anti Vehicle, the Lancer, and snipe with that. It's much easier to hit soldiers. and you can usually get 2 or 3 shots on the guy before he can react. No waiting for cross hairs to collect, no problem with moving fast or slow. And it's great for MAX hunting too. And, I suppose, to kill vehicles. But I hardly ever kill a vehicle with a Lancer by myself, unless It's slow moving, not moving, or no one is around. *shrugs* Lancer seems to be better against MAX's and Infantry than against vehicles. At least the Striker and Pheonix get me vehicle kills. Yeah, the Lancer get's me vehicle kills too. I get plenty of kills against Aircraft, ANT's, ATV's, and even deployed AMS's

Perhaps, but I only seem to make them run away, or try to run ME over. I do kill the odd tank, most Lightnings, as their armor is weaker.

Cool guys. I'll give him the info. I'm actually thinking of sniping myself. I've tried vehicles, hacking and MAXs and haven't really liked any of those. I'm going to try messing with different weapons and see how those work for me.

Yeah Lancers scare me more than Strikers do in my tank. At least with Strikers you get some warning :p

Agaisnt any tank execpt a lightning (which takes like one clip) a lancer user is screwed. You are gonna get run over or get shot/blow up.

Only exeption is something like the top of a mountain. High ground. Just fall behind the mountain for a sec when you see the huge ass shells coming.

tell your friend this...

1 - Take everything he has learned as a sniper in other FPS(CounterStrike, UT, RTCW, etc.)...and FORGET IT.

2 - The only one hit kills(meaning when a target is 100% healthy) you will get ever, are on Infiltrators and freshly respawned people in standard armor. it is a fact of life, and we snipers have to deal with it. :(

3 - never camp out in one spot for too long. once you shoot , especially if you get a hit on someone, you give your position away with that big-ass red tracer. take a couple shots, get a kill or two, then move. even if you move 10 feet away, it is normally enough to throw your targets off.

4. Be patient. don't take a shot unless your Cone of Fire is closed completely, and you are sure you can hit. The hardest thing to do IMO is NOT to take a risky shot, but if you do take that shot, and you miss...not only do you give your position away...you also wasted a shot and didn't do any damage. you carry the least amount of ammunition in the entire game, so you can't afford to waste shots.

5 - Never reload in the open. this is something I am still learning lol. take your shot, retreat just a little bit for cover, reload, then come back to your spot. reloading in the open makes you prime opposing sniper bait.

6 - Pick your perches well. another thing i am still learning. Standing on top of that mountain overlooking the base with the sky at your back may seem like a great spot to snipe from...till that reaver drops his entire payload of rockets on your head. or until that sniper who can see you plain as day plucks you off, and you have nowhere to hide.

6a - when picking a spot take the following into consideration:

a) Line of Sight - How well can you see your target area? How much land will your sights be able to cover? Is there anything blocking your view?
b)Concealment - How visible are you to opposing snipers? Will your targets notice you, before you shoot?
c) Accessibility - How easy (or hard) is it for an opponent(particularly Infiltrators) to find and get to you?
d) Air Cover (this is a hard one IMO) - from your chosen perch, Are you Reaver Fodder?
e) Escape - Is there a place close by where you can retreat to in order to heal if you are hit, or reload? Is this place concealed enough that enemy snipers can't see you? Can you quickly get away from a charging enemy(or cloaked Infil) if you need to?

Get the Adcanced Targetting implant to help pick out targets, take cover that will not only hide you from the ememy in the base but the reavers and skeeters patrolling the area.

Oh and get reinf' armour and 2 bolt drivers - just incase you need to take a second sho but don't have time to reload.
