Because it very effectivly nuetralises a base
cant spawn, cant get kit, get use terminals.
and usually the gen isnt near the spawn and hasnt got troops guarding it, do its easy to take out.

Because it has its uses, and Noobs just see it done and run with it. They do it everywhere, not just in certain situations

Killing the gens, often hurts you just as much as it does the enemy. You can't hack terminals which can come in handy for a force defending the hack.
Killing the spawn tubes should be priority number one and hacking the CC a close second. Taking out the generator is an absolute last resort.
i can see why it would be a good thing to take it out but this week all most every bace i was at got its gen taken out.
dose kill the gen efect the Cap Xp for that bace ???

It doesn't affect experience, but it makes holding the hack harder. With the gens running you can put vehicles into the fight faster and replace those lost AMSs faster.
Kill the spawn tubes and hang onto the generator is a better policy.

I blow gens, I blow everything. does it matter if everything is blown up but the gen?

If you're blowing anything on a hacked base after the spawn tubes are down you are wrong.

no i do that to bases that suround the hacked base (kinda dumb but really usefull when a defensive zerg is coming at you). also its fun to do that for the hell of it...... :D :) ;) :p
I destroy Gens all the time, only if it's a big battle. I also try to get an AMS into courtyard before too. If there is little resistance, I won't even bother, I'll usually just blow the tubes.

when you only have a tower and the enemy is too numerous to get to the CC, or even get close to the back door, do your best to destroy the gen
Blowing the gen is extremely useful in those situations when you've got one zerg bashing into another during an extended stale mate. Once you finally make it through to the base, wipe out the generator and quench the swarm.

If the base battle has been going for a good 15 to 20 minutes I blow the gens. It's pointless to battle endlessly in a stairwell, and do the hack/rehack flip-flop for an hour. Extended battles do nothing but run the risk of losing more ground then you started with.
If the battle is dragging out, blow the gens.
The other circumstance is if you are the first to a heavily occupied enemy base. Blowing the gens creates one hell of a distraction. By the time the enemy has the gens repaired, the friendly forces have decended upon them and destroy everything.
*Edit:
Thought of a story from last night on Emerald. NC was in a heated battle with the VS on Hossin. The fight had been dragging on and on in a bio lab. We'd push down the stairs, then get pushed out. I died to more friendly plasma then I ever have.
Finally I say screw it and rush upstairs to bring down the gens. By this point, we had a hack but in no means had control of the spawn room. I'm diligently laying my boomers...got the 9th one down and this asshat busts in with his jack and lays waste to me. He then proceeds to destroy my boomers. When asked why the hell he did that, he called me a "supid nube" (exact quote), and proceeded to explain to me that the gens were required in order to hack the base. No amount of reasoning could change his mind, and finally I was put on ignore.

There's a time and a place for it, ie, if you dont have a link. Just left Everlasting on Werner because one of the top guys in the outfit said he would kick me if i EVER destroyed a gen, i said dont bother, with that attitude i dont want to be in the same outfit as you tosser.
So some people are wrong in completely the opposite way.

Please, blow the gens as a last resort. If you have everything under control execpt the spawn room, go rush the spawn room, blow them instead of the gens
also, dont blow the vpad unless the enemy is buying vehicles. I really dont want to fucking wait around for 15 minutes doing nothing when i could get a hacker and get the fuck out and to the next one.

The ONLY time the gen should be killed is to stop spawning. The only time it is usually needed is in bio labs (where the gen is in an easily accessable location). In all other bases, if you can make your way all the way to the gen, you can probably just as easily secure the spawn room (A base defence falls in a pattern, tower>terrain between tower and base>CY>front or back door>stairwell(if front door is penetrated)>spawn room. After the CY or front/back door is broken into, it becomes apparent it's only a matter of time before the spawn room is overrun. This is why bio labs are a special situation. Once the CY is broken into, you can get to the gen without breaking down the front/back door defence.
Also, in base draining situations, contrary to popular myth, the gen should be left intact. With all terminals and turrets destroyed the base will drain far faster than with the gen destroyed (in this case, ONLY the gen is auto-repaired until it is operational again).

if it is apparent your losing the base... destroying the gen before withdrawing sure sets you up for a counter ;)
