LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Whether it's curled up in the fetal position, flat on the stomach or stretched out across the bed, the way people sleep reveals their personality, a British sleep expert said on Tuesday.

Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service and a visiting professor at the University of Surrey in southern England, has identified six common sleep positions and what they mean.

"We are all aware of our body language when we are awake but this is the first time we have been able to see what our subconscious says about us," he said.

Crouched in the fetal position is the most popular sleep pattern and favored by 51 percent of women, according to the results of the study he conducted for a large hotel group.

Fetal sleepers tend to be shy and sensitive while people who assume the soldier position, flat on their back with arms at their sides, are quiet and reserved.

Sleeping on one's side with legs outstretched and arms down in what Idzikowski refers to as the log, indicates a social, easy-going personality. But if the arms are outstretched, the person tends to be more suspicious.

The freefall, flat on the tummy with the hands at the sides of the head, is the most unusual position. Only 6.5 percent of people prefer it and they are usually brash and gregarious.

Unassuming, good listeners usually adopt the starfish position -- on the back with outstretched arms and legs.

Idzikowski, who identified the positions by comparing personality traits of people, their preferred way of sleeping and the most common positions, said once a sleeping style is adopted it is rarely changed.

"What's interesting is that the profile behind the posture is often very different from what we would expect," he added in a statement.

I use the "Freefall, flat on tummy with the hands at the side of head" technique. Hey, i'm brash and gregarious, old news! :D

What about motherfuckers like me who start i the fetal position, work our way to the kick "kick off the fuckin blankets off" position, and then lay on our side with our arms stretched out position and then over to the "scratch my balls" position?

:D

*lol*

Ah, well, me I go through all sleeping positions, and I go through a lot of crap during the day. Is there a cranky-all-day position?

But if the arms are outstretched, the person tends to be more suspicious. Thats how I sleep and thats how I am. Except when I am tired from a football game/practice, then it is normally however I fall when I first lay down.

I lay on my stomach with my legs strechted out and my hands under my pillow, sort of next to my head. That is the "freefall" right? But I'm not really brash and have a small group of friends so I don't fit the trend.

Im pretty much fetal position. I lub curling up under the blankes and getting way to hot, so i kick off the blanket during the night, then wake up again freezing and trying to find my blankets

It depends on the situation I guess.
Most commonly though I fall asleep on my side with my arms under meh pillow and wake up in the fetal position.
Odd quirk: I have a hard time sleeping without a fan blowing on me. Even when it's -30 outside I have that damn fan going. My current fan has been running for almost 2 years straight. I'm afraid that if I turn it off it won't start again. It's just a $10 Walmart fan.

I always have a fan going as well. It's hard to sleep in dead silence. Some people like it all quiet but I can't stand it. That "E" sounds that starting going through your head after a while.. followed by that voice that tells you to kill people.. ugh
