View Full Version : Old Obscure PC Games
Just reading thru some old threads and Fallout came up. Loved that.
Well, it got me thinkin on all the games I've played over time...some more obscure than others...some I'm not sure anyone but me ever bought and played.
With that, what are some of the less popular games that were ever published that you remember? good or bad, I dont care...just obscure and quite probably short lived.
Anyone remember these?
Starseige (Not tribes...this was more like Mechwarrior. Was ok. some pretty unique weapons on the mechs there in MP...but quickly hacked to death and was rendered unplayable due to rampant cheats)
G-nome (another mechwarrior wannabe.....except it sucked beyond all levels of known suckage ever discovered)
Others I can barely recall the name, but still stink up my collection somewhere.

I remember this StarSeige you speak of, though i never played it, and Falout comes to mind, but you already said that one.
Conquest of the New world, i dunno if this was a widly known game, but it still deserves its props as prolly one of the best Turn base Stratagy games i ever played.
Secret of Evermore, a rare RPG, i think it sucks, but its made by SquareSoft
i remember this old RPG, not Kings Quest, but a game just like it, that i liked alot.
RBI base Ball, for the NES, great game
Warlords, like pong, but 4 way, and the objective is to get the ball behinds the enemys defenses, and hit a lil block to kill him. Atari...
gah ive been playing Games since i was five, but that was too long ago for me to remember any more games.

Lemmings= greatest classic PC game of all time. I also liked Duke Nukem 3D and Wolfenstein 3D. and the Sims too i guess, if that counts as a classic yet. :D

Never palyed Starsiege, but I've heard of it.
G-Nome is still one of my favorite games thanks to the fact that you can get out of your mech and fight on foot.
And Lemmings is still my all time favorite puzzle game.

it rocked, i still have it but havent tried to play it in so long. when you capture a space, the two pieces fight each other. lot of funny fights. like when boba (black bishop) captures chewie (white knight) he fries chewie with his jetpack. hell, its got to be 10 years old.

Does anyone Remember Cyber Empires? I was addicted to it back in the day. It was kinda like a Turn Based Strategy/Action Game. You would use a turn based map to decide which territories you would capture for resources. After you made your decision you would go into real time combat mode fighting the defending forces. You would use mechs as your soldiers and there were different kinds with varying weights and loadouts.

Anyone remember a game called Loderunner? Not the 3d one, the old loderunner (the 3d one sucked). You are this little guy running around that can blast the ground below you to make the bad guys (monks) fall in. You tried to collect various pieces of treasure. Me and my friends had a blast on the multiplayer mode.
This is a really old one, does anyone remember a game called Toxic the Groundhog? It was probably the first computer game I ever played a lot of. You are this little groundhog that tries to collect cans of toxic sludge while avoiding the monsters and the oozing sludge that got out of its can because you couldn't collect it fast enough. The game had about 4 colors, it was 2d, and the sound consisted of various beeps.

Lets see...
Bad Mojo! is probably one of the most unique adventure games I've ever played. You play as a roach who was once a human and get to look at some pretty sick stuff.
Buried in Time was another good adventure game too. Surprisingly edumacational too.
Space Empires IV. I don't know if this can be considered an "old" game per se, but if you look at the graphics you'll think it is. :D That said, its the single best 4x strategy game I've EVER played.
Ascendancy was another great 4x game. For its time, it had some incredible graphics. It's still the only 4x game I know that has a 3d system map.
Heavy Gear 2. Mechwarrior sucks. Starsiege was better, but sucked in some aspects. Heavy Gear 2 was the first (IMO) to get the giant mech fighting formula right. Good difficulty balance, mission variety, simple enough controls, and pretty decent AI make this my all time mech favorite. What other mech game lets you fight in space?
Flying Heroes. Think Unreal Tournament with people riding dragons and such.

I remember Cyber Empires. If I remember right it was a little on the buggy side though.
Old games...heh
Tie Fighter
Full Throttle
X-Com
X-Com Terror from the deep
Dark Forces!
Duke Nukem 3D
Ascendancy
MoO!
Fantasy Generals
Master of Magic...god I loved that game :)
Command and Conquer
Dune 2
Warcraft
Terra Nova (Still trying to find this gem again lol)
Front Lines (Could have been great but way too buggy)
Twilight 2000 (nothing compared to the table top but still fun)
Bleh I dunno there are so god damned many. I got most of those just looking at the boxes we've collected. We used it keep every box from every computer game we ever bought, but tossed out about 6 large leaf bags worth a year ago or so.

thanks for all the reminders people, how could i forget Tie Fighter?
or Duke 3D or Wolfenstine, the good one and not this new POS version.
anyways, im gonna try out Cyber Empires. it sounds fun. and i played HeavyGear, and what i didnt like about it was the fixing up your mech part of it, it wasnt.....as straight foward, as Mechwarriors system, and ill admit, after MechWarrior 3, Mechwarrior sucks.

What's cool about G-Nome is that that sort of gameplay could be resurrected by a gaming engine like Planetside, and it would rule man. It would be like PS, but with giant robots.

I don't remember the name of it, I think it was a Win32 application though.
It could be played in like 30 mins. But was quite the game. It was in 3D, and was a space sim.

You could "warp" from sector to sector, when ever the scripted attacks began. Basically you pressed a key, then selected the area on a map, then flew through this green, winding tunnel thing for a few secs.
You could also "dock" at these stations, which were looked like a big donut. You had to fly up the centre to "dock", then get repairs and replenish ammo.
Me and my brother use to play it always way back. I used the game pad to pilot and shoot. And he was beside me with the key board as the "opperations officer". Switching weapons, warping in an outta systems, bringing up the map, setting docking sequences.
Good times, good times :D

you fly around inside your computer destroying corrupted files and stuff. you get weapons like a Bottle Rocket (which is actually a Beer Bottle), boomerang, grappling hook and stuff.

Xcom: UFO Defence was, definately, the best of the series. God.. i used to have nightmared from that game. The game was so dark and shadowy and your sitting there late at night. You watch the bar move as the 'Alien Side' makes it's move (with the creepy music) then suddennly: BAM! Screen flashes back to in-game and some wicked alien with a fusion bomb launcher blows out the side of your landing craft, taking half your team out in one hit.

Yeah, it was hard. You had to dig underground for most everything. One thing i noticed is you needed like 2 red light districts making "fuzzy dice" for ever 1 residential housing unit. wtf?
I just wish i could find some solid online documentation on this game. I'd love to find the old diskettes and give it a whirl.

1. Don't be some jerk-off who thinks the word "poem" is insulting. Theirs plenty of tight-ass poems in the world. Poe? One sick puppy. Of course we're not talking about what some pale faced liberal arts philosphy/english double major nancy boy writes. Hell no. But what's on your sig is definately a poem. A cool one at that.
2. It's too big. Stfu. It is. Don't argue.
3. Wait, what did you mean by part 1 and 2? Was there an expancion? Or a sequel? If it's a sequel is the first one worth getting?

Good times, good times :D
Sounds a bit like Star Ranger, but that wasn't Win32.
Anyway. Wing Commander and the X-Wing series are pretty neck-in-neck, I think. WC2 and 3 weren't that hot, but WC4's story was just awesome. The only weak point the XW games had were their plots - since you could choose your campaigns, they kinda had to be light on the storyline (but they were huge on the shit going boom, so who cares?) And yes, Tie Fighter was the best of the XW games (though WX:Alliance is a close second.)
As for games no one remembers: Fragile fucking Allegiance (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=426), yo.It was hard, and it had a few problems, but that was the first game that really succeeded at keeping me up until dawn. Awesome graphics for the day, great ambient music, cool aliens, an interface so good and so efficient it was scary, and mechanisms that made either micro OR macro management easy caused that game to "just plain kick it in the junk." The ONLY problems it had were that it didn't stop for fleet combat (IMHO time should have paused while you watched your fleet duke it out over an asteroid or in space) and the fact that you could eventually run out of asteroids to mine without getting a "You are a winner!" kind of screen. Either it could never end or you could win somehow... in other words, a game that is just BEGGING for a remake. And it's actually legal to get off of Underdogs (link), since Gremlin has more or less surrendered rights to it to public domain.
And yes, I remember Sopwith. T3h pwn indeed. :p Commander Keen was good in the day too... most of the old Apogee/Epic Megagames titles were. (Yes, THAT Epic Megagames.) Anyone remember ZZT (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=2230)? Sweeny's very first game, and I think it still holds up today. (Actually, ZZT was incredibly important, as it was the first PC game that came with a built-in level editor that allowed to you essentially create whole new games in the ZZT engine and then distribute them over what passed for the Internet back then... but that's practically a thread in and of itself. :p)
