You probably wouldn't get your money's worth out of a joystick for Planetside's VTOL flight system, but they can be useful for many other games.

It takes some time but you can esailly fly and manuver with the keyboard.
PS + Joystick = teh suck
BF1942 + Joystick = teh pwnage
Basically if you can get your joystick configured properly using the buggy key mapping screen in Planetside, then it's possible it may work ok, but I doubt it because the hovercraft style of Planetside is really corny arcade physics. When you use your mouse to control a Reaver you have no preconceived notions about how to fly, whereas a joystick will mess with your head because the air vehicles just don't react how you'd expect.

im buying one bc I had surgery on my left hand and therefore I cant use it. well, its more of a gamepad/mouse crossover. I forgot what its called, but I can play any fps game now with one hand.

You can use a joystick to drive but not to fly. Spork said sometime ago we would like to make the flight system compatible with a joystick but its not on the list so:o
The joystick works for planes and ground vehicles, it's just a pain to get it configured, and the "hover-plane" physics were rather tricky to control with the joystick.

Logitech is the brand to buy, best drivers and support bar none.

Yeah, a joystick isnt needed at all for PS, once u get the hang of the keyboard its really easy 2 fly. Driving, well, driving is a bit tougher because of the absolute left or right steering, but u get used 2 it...
Oh, btw, just a heads up NNY, sigbot is gonna have that sig for lunch, get the smaller modified one.

Tried a joystick with PS, hated it. It's damn near impossible to configure right and it sure as hell doesn't feel right.
As for as joysticks go I had a MS Sidewinder Pro up until a few days ago. I reinstalled Mechwarrior 4+Black Knight+Mercenaries and found out my throttle would no longer work on my joystick due to something being wrong with the joystick or XP just not working with it. So I did some research and went shopping. Ended up with a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2. So far I love it.
I'm not a big fan of force feedback in general but the performance of the stick thus far has been flawless. The real kicker for me however is the thing weighs at least five or six pounds and has a nice large base on it.
I looked at other joysticks but for the most part they all seemed to have no appreciable weight and no base to speak of which would drive me nuts. I'm not one who plays with a joystick on the desk because quite frankly that feels akward to me. I generally sit it on my right knee (just about always sit crosslegged or with one legged tucked up in my computer chair).
My only real complaint is the buttons on the top of the stick. The trigger is fine as are the base buttons but the ones up on top (the hat and other secondary buttons) have too much wiggle to them. I prefer the buttons on my controllers to not be able to move at all unless I'm moving them intentionally but every other stick I looked at was even worse, most with loose trigers which is something I can't stand at all.
Overall though best stick I've ever owned. Now if they'd just come out with some new games for me to use it with. /em crosses fingers for another X-wing/TIE Fighter game :p

i use a regualr sidewinder for MW4 mercs tried useing it with the reaver for a while but its not percice enought and you keep goin in one direction when you push it one way or the other so you have to push it back the othere way and overcorrect, it sucks. but its great for game like MW4 flightsims and i heard they work well with RTs's if you can get it configed right(all the extra buttons would help)
