View Full Version : Little Gamers, good god.
I'm not all that sure Little Gamers was doing that good to start with, but check today's comic: http://www.little-gamers.com/
Jesus H. Christ. Not only is he just a moron to begin with (for those too lazy for clickage, he's "saluting" the guys who hacked Valve, because Valve was "dumb enoguh to let it happen") but... that goes beyond shooting yourself in the foot. That's more like taking a loaded 12-gauge, pointing it at your head, screaming "I RULE BECAUSE I'M STUPID," and then pulling the fucking trigger. It'll be interesting to see if this one strip kills the comic (got the link from halflife2.net, which means rabid fanboys are already probably plotting ways of demolishing the website) or if they retract it in the face of massive waves of hate.

I don't "salute" the hacker(s), but in this case I do have respect for them. As I said in the last thread about the hack, I am a network security consultant, so my entire life revolves around staying one step ahead of the pro hackers, and ten steps ahead of the "script kiddies."
And it is a challange, but it is that challange that makes my job fun! It is always a gamble that sticking an exchange server behind a firewall, but allowing the exchange service through will open a tiny hole in a company's network that a clever hacker could exploit. So to stay one step ahead of it I have a shutdown rule in place... If a connection is made for more then two seconds on TCP135 without a cooresponding sucessfull authentication then it kills the connection and notifies me by a SMS message to my cell phone.
I have been to plenty of my clients that are about to lay off their whole IT staff, and they call me in the night before the layoff is going to happen to prepare a full lockdown and monitoring system, so when the layoffs happen we have someone monitoring to see if even the slightest odd thing happens. And believe it or not, I would say about 25% of people go straight home and try to log back into the network!
But, that is totally on a different subject...

well, as I was telling hamma yesterday in IRC, I do think Valve is a little at fault for this.
Gabe said that they knew someone was accessing his email account on 9/11. They waited a WEEK (9/19) [all the while the guy was accessing his email account] and then found there was a keylogger on certain computers. They STILL didn't try to get rid of the logger!
If I were Valve, and I had good IT people, I would've just closed his email account as soon as I knew there was someone else viewing it.
It's their fault for not taking action immediately.
Maybe Valve was a little lax in security, but you guys get my point, right? They don't deserve trash talking like that. (And I am taking bets as to how long LG can withstand the onslaught of HL2 fanboys flaming them/trying to bring down their site. I suspect they'll be toast uptime-wise by this evening EST. :p )

Hmm could this perhaps have been a joke? No nevermind, that would be silly. I mean, would put a joke in a comic strip?

The comic is implying in a tounge-in-cheek way that the stolen code was just an excuse to delay HL2. I do kinda fail to see how that is a salute to the hackers. What have you been smoking, Lise?

i want to get a baseball bat and go beat the living crap out of whoever stole the code and yes it is kinda Valves fault but still, its like in school (and back for some of you) and someone would steal something from the teacher and you'd all get punished...

Ah yeah I see that now, I generally ignore the rants of people who create web comics which probably explains who I missed it. Technically he's right though. Swiping the HL2 code is no small feat /shrug

I dont get how they actually STOLE 3rd of the code. now they have to rewrite that whole part of the game. "Hmmm.....now I think gordon meets the horde of headcrabs here...."
"No no no this is where he is being chased by the alien ship down the highway!"
" O forget it. just put another boss fight."
Im worried this might take some of the luster from half life 2
From what I understand, most of the content won't be rewritten. What needs to be rewritten is all the netcode for Steam and HL2 multiplayer that was stolen. People can do NASTY shit with that currently.
