ok so if i try to visit http://www.google.com it comes to a page that says

Error: The website you are looking for does not appear to be located on this server.

If you are looking for one of the major search engines please click here for the correct links: Search Engine links (http://justtemplates.com/search.html)

Thankyou.

If i click the link, then it goes to http://justtemplates.com/search.html and i finally can click "google", which sends me to http://216.239.37.99/

this last page allows me to search google, but wtf is wrong and why cant i just visit google directly?

I get some thing that says there is no website configured at this address.

If I click on google on that link you gave me to an IP address and it works.

Earlier I was having a problem where if I went to www.google.com I would get a page not found error. Weird

You might have a browser hi-jack.

eXoSloth
2003-10-19, 06:02 PM
And that is what?

Hamma

Some guy named jack took over your browser.

Smaug

Its adware. Whenever you enter google.com into your browser, it will re-route you to thier site, which is a google lookalike except with ads. I've had the google hijack before, just get spybot S&D and it will find it.

Yup sounds like a hijack. Check your hosts file for changes.

Khronos

Ya ditto. I wonder what kind of staff it takes to maintain a site like google

I also know that some adware proggies take the name of the Google Taskbar file, so that Ad-Aware doesn't eat them.

go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts (some kind of file)

open it in wordpad, delete everything except 127.0.0.1

go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts (some kind of file)

open it in winamp, delete everything except 127.0.0.1

While you're at it, delete C:\Windows\

I found a file in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc called hosts that said this:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

[edit] I opened in wordpad

Yours is fine then, if anything there relflects google.com it must be deleted

Go to Start, Run, and type "CMD" then enter ("command" if you use Win98)

At the prompt type "ping www.google.com" It will come back with something like this:

Pinging www.google.akadns.net [216.239.37.99] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=38ms TTL=47
Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=33ms TTL=47

What does yours say, that will tell you if it is a DNS resolution problem or if it is something screwy with your IE install.

It seems rather pointless, they are basicly the same thing except the Canadian Google has Canada written on it.

Edit: Oops sorry, works for me now and the logo is the same, my bad.

Did you run those adaware progs like others suggested?

Khronos

yup, i always run AdAware 6.0 and i downloaded Spyboy Search & Destroy.

Khronos

i fixed the "view source problem" by just clearing my temporary internet files. apparently its caused if there are too many files in it.

Hamma
2003-10-20, 07:33 PM
hmm, no idea why google would timeout

Khronos
2003-10-20, 07:51 PM
fixed it :brow:

turns out theres another hosts file located at

C:\WINDOWS\help\hosts

i went into there and found about 25 or so redirected hosts to http://207.44.194.56

i simply deleted all these and then restarted my computer.

these redirected *tons* of different search pages from engines like msn, yahoo, altavista, and every single google domain name to the 207.44.194.56 ip.

That ip contains a link to windowsupdate.com, and even though i had downloaded all of the security updates, it did not delete these redirected hosts.

I'm glad i figured this out ;) now i can happily browse google (and all the other search engines) again.

thanks for your help guys, the host file tip is what really helped me out here
