View Full Version : Piloting Air Vehicles

I am looking for an efficient configuration for piloting air vehicles.
I have heard of folks using joysticks, then going back to the mouse with refined adjustments to sensitivities. I am curious to how you profound pilots or aviators (which ever you consider yourself to be) have your clients tuned.
Any help at all.. well just might..however how unlikely.. may help me fly better.
Thanks to all in advance!

Meh, I like to use the mouse with inverted driving so I can aim my weapons just like I would on foot. I keep the sensitivity pretty low though so I can get precise aim on foot soldiers if required.
All movement is on the mouse wherever possible, such as elevate/lower and such. In fact, I only really ever use the keyboard while piloting to strafe and go forward/backwards.

Here are some quotes from the Dallas Dickenson interview:
Hamma: Yeah I remember on one of our previous interviews Dave mentioning all the weird stuff that's involved in those. Ok, the next question is from, I believe it's Nislocsen. "Several people were curious, How close is joystick support?"
Dallas: Some of you may've been around earlier in the game when we actually did support other types of controllers. It's absolutely silly that they're not supported now, and it's definitely something we are looking into. It honestly could be as easily as a days work for a programmer, but it's not something that's really on the high priority things, and we'll address it as soon as we get a chance.
Marsman: Yeah, I think the public, has to understand that you guys have done a lot of work, you've jammed a lot of work into the last few months with the expansion and the balance pass, so just to hear that you guys are aware that it's on the list is good news to all of us. I wanted to point that out.
Dallas: Actually, some folks that were at the EQ fan faire, both Dave and I talked there, we gave a couple of talks about it, and that was one of the issues that Dave was concerned about, that he can't play with a controller. It's definitely on the list, and it's pretty high on the list.
Marsman: Ok, very good, this one also from Nisloscen, "Will the flight model ever evolve to include more range of motion like the ability to perform barrel rolls and loops?"
Dallas: The answer to that is Yes, it probably will. That would likely be under the category of, as I mentioned before, an advanced reaver pilot or advanced pilot cert, where you would get access to that kind of maneuverability, um, mostly one of the reasons it's not there in the first place, is that kind of control is kind of difficult for the average player. It's mostly the people who play flight sims who get that, and so the way the flight vehicles work right now, it's deliberately simpler for those who are starting out, but if you find out that if you JUST want to be a reaver pilot or a pilot, then, yeah, we do want to allow that. That's also on the list for that beyond BR 20 beyond CR 5 list of things.
Does this answer your questions?

If they put in barrel rolls and such, they would do well to put an artificial horizon on the HUD. Don't know why it isn't there to start with. Seems it would be a fairly simple thing to do.

I want to find some way of stopping air vehichles from turning unless you move your mouse. I dont like how they turn if you are on this axis of turning, and it wont stop until you move out of it.

They designed this engine from the ground up for this game, one of the main reasons it took so long.

Thanks for all the information!
What i really hate it how you turn, if you stop moving your mouse left, you still keep turning left until you turn your mouse exactly as much to the right. I have no idea why they did this, it makes spinning in circles easier, but it makes just abour everything else very hard for me.
Nothing pisses the crap out of me like games with controlls like that.
What i hate about this engine is how its not very open, you cant do flips and stuff on planes, it feels like im driving on a 2d flat invisible road, but its great for a massive multiplayer game.

You can reduce that a lot by messing with one of the sliders in your mouse controls area. It's called vehicle centre point or something.

I use the Microsoft Strategic Commander and the mouse for both the usual running around and for piloting my reaver. I use the Strategic Commander with my left hand and the mouse with my right. After you play around with the sensitivity you can get it pretty close to what feels right. The Strategic Commander is awesome to use, it can have up to three profiles active and has directional support, zoom, and six programmable buttons with 3 shift keys giving you up to 18 programmable buttons per profile. I use one profile for running around and then switch to my reaver profile when I hop in. It may not be for everyone but I hate using the keyboard and have not been able to use the joystick effectively, I can fly fine but can not hit anything with it. Does anyone else use a strategic commander? It takes a little while to get used to but is well worth it in my opinion.

You sound like an advertiser for Microsoft, didn't you read the sign? No solicitors.

What can I say, I think Gates and his people built a fairly good product in the Stragegic commander. I use the commander in Planetside, Tribes2, Ghost Recon, and Warcraft. Don't hate the Reaver pilot and his controls.

personal, i like the engine used in Halo PC for the banshee. very easy to fly, and fun. if they just added land/rise function, that would be the engine 4 me
