Athlon Xp 2600+ FSB Question

I bought Athlon Xp 2600 amd a Albatron KM18G Pro motherboard package. I noticed in my bios that the fsb frequency is set to 133mhz. I thought it would be set at 333mhz becuase I read that both my motherboard and processor support 333 fsb. So I went into the bios to try and raise the fsb to 333 but the highest option was only 166mhz. So i set it to that thinking its better than 166mhz so why not set it higher. Well after doing that and restarting, the monitor is blank and not recieving a signal. So I reset the cmos and bios to defualt and it started up agian. I just want to know how to get my mobo and processor working together at 333 fsb? Thanks for any help

the AMD FSB is twice the speed set there, liek DDR 400 memory is realy one 200mhz but it does the same amount of work as a 400mhz non DDR (theoreticaly). an Intel is quadbumped so 100 mhz = 400mhz FSB 200 mhz = 800 mhz ect

Ah ok I see now , well right now my fsb is set at 100mhz but i'm gonna bump it up to 133 becuase it was my previuos setting so it should work. But 166 is about half of 333 so why doesnt 166mhz work for me? I got the 600w psu from ebay , its an off brand but works really well, the cooling fans on it though are kinda load but doesnt bother me. And yeah , I like my system specs too. Oh and I bought the Zalman heatpipe cooler with optional fan and love it !

If you set your bios to autodetect it should set it at the right multiplier and fsb. Though sometimes you do have to set them manually. XP2500's will often detect as 3200's.

Question is, do you have a Tbred 2600 or a Barton 2600. The Tbred is 133/266 while the Barton will be 166/333. Use a program like CPUid or something to find out which you got.

Also, you got the black screen prolly b/c you did not change the multipler when you changed the FSB. So you OC'ed it way to much.

The Tbred XP2600 is 16x133 = 2.128 pretty much the 2.133 the chip is rated.
The Barton XP2600 is 11.5x166 = 1.992 pretty much the 1.917 the chip is rated.

So if you were set at 2.128 speed and changed just the fsb from 133 to 166 you would end up at 2656, more than enough to send your bios into darkness. So try changed the multiplier to 11.5 when you adjust the fsb to 166.

The good news, even if yu have a Tbred XP2600 they do OC well. My XP2400 sits nice and cool at 11x200 = 2.2 ghz which gives me about XP3200 performance. Only downside, you don't have as much onboard cache as a Barton.

Also not all MB's are very friendly at unlocking AMD multipler's. Some can only do clocks above 12, some can do under 12. Some can't unlock for crap. Your MB is a NF2 board, but not an Ultra 400. So it doesn't officially support going above 166. Many NF2 makers still gave the option of higher than 166 fsb speeds b/c the Ultra 400 chipset wasn't available for a while. Looks like Albatron locked it out though to make ppl buy the KX18D Pro or Pro II.

I have the TBred Version I assume since I know its not a barton core. I'm not looking to oc it though, I just want it to run at 333 fsb , or 166 frequency. Thanx for that info though, made me understand it better =)

Well your chip is rated to run 133. Pumping up the fsb and lowering the clock is not really OC'ing, atleast not much if you get to close to what the chip is rated for. And if you have PC3200 or 3500 ram you will defintely get more memory performance by raising the fsb.

So you can try playing around between 11.5 and 12 with 166 fsb. As long as they boot, and you can run tests like 3Dmark2003 and Prime95 it should be stable.
