So, I personally have been following PS for like 2 years. Now we are finally in "The year of PlanetSide" and I personally am excited as hell. :D
How long has everyone been following the game?

Well, I found out about the game in around march of last year and didnt fallow it much through the summer because the release date was so far away. Then in september I looked it up again and found official site and forums to chat on. The game had grown so much it caught my attension and I've fallowed it since then. It is very exiting getting so close to release, especially with the ads I see and pre-order already. I just hope more and more people find this game everyday because every gamer should realize that this isn't your ordinary FPS. The only way this game could flop is if the word doesn't get out, but maybe I'm just ignorant to the amout of people already waiting to buy it.

I read about it when it was first announced. Was just some obscure game back then which looked interesting, but not interesting enough to actively follow. Now that I've read more, though, it looks like it may be the FPS game that I wished WW2OL would have beem.

I've knonw about it for a year or so but if a game is that far away I try to not follow it. Gets annoying to wait like that. I started really getting into about...5 months ago.

I got way too excited about this game way too early, and my hopes were crushed when I realized that it was a looong way off. So I went away and forgot about it until a couple of months ago, when I saw some new screenshots. Now I've bought a new machine way over the sysreqs and am just chomping at the bit to get in.

I found PS when Dave Georgeson announced as their producer on PlanetTribes. I've been a rabid fan-boy ever since. 30 years old, and still a fan-boy. *sigh*. At least I never went in for that whole trekky thing.
That was about... what? 3-6 months ago? Several weeks before the beta announcement.

I've know about it for about 1.5 yrs now. I try to forget about games that are that far away because it's bad for your health and sanity :0
I really started getting into it in late November I think. I was on some gaming site(gamespy i think...pity me) and it said something along the lines of "Tomorrow we take a look at the progress Planetside has made and what stage the game is currently in."
Wow had it come a long way from those screenshots way back...I swear I could literally count the pixels in those...1,2,3,8!
Both SWG and SB have stated their official release dates....
PS offical release date: ahh when is it
I sure as hell hope they do not release PS after SWG;that would be an evil marketing scheme for Sony. If that happened I would probably play SWG while I wait for PS and get hooked on it.....not good :)

I saw it way back when it had apartments and espionage, and didn't think twice. I saw it again when they had open beta, I also didn't apply for it. I hate myself. I want this game soooo bad. Hell I hope the game is as good as these forums...

Last I heard, they had in the neighborhood of 16,000 apps for 1,000 spots in Public Closed. Those odds aren't terrible for the ones who signed up. I doubt that beta emails have gone out yet, or we would have heard something real.

Nope, they have NOT sent out the Emails... unless they lied and didn't announce it and added one hell of a NDA keeping the word from getting out.
Also, its 13000 people going up for 3-5000 slots not 16000 for 1000

No, for closed beta there are very few spots, about 1000. For open however there are more.
Sputty
2003-01-17, 07:29 AM
Open beta would ahve unlimited spots available. That's why it's open. Closed beta has what MrVicchio said.

2003-01-17, 07:37 AM
So explain to me this. Why in the form did it ask you to choose whether you wanted to be in closed or open beta? Why would you apply for open if you could get into it anyway? I'm sure they won't want idiots in beta who just want to play.
This points to the fact that open won't have unlimited spaces, and that open beta candidates will be chosenAnd anyway, it can't be unlimited because the beta server won't accommodate unlimited players  .

Ithought it worked like this.
Closed beta -this is what they are in now. Sony employees are testing and tweaking.
Limited open beta- this is the one with 1000 people.
Stress test(full open beta) - this is where they try to pack as many people on one server as they can. I was under the impression that anyone could get into this one.

Saw the blurp in Computer Gaming World way back when. My first thought was 'Why would I pay to play a FPS??' and forgot about it.
Recently started seeing adds in CGW so decided to look at it again and was impressed by what I saw. With the servers under SOE control cheating and such will (hopfully) be kept to a minimum if not eliminated. After playing TFC for 3 years, Tribes 2 for a year, RtCW a couple months, BF1942 since release and Urban Terror for a month or so and seeing all the Aim bots, wall hacks and LLAMAS, paying to play on a cheat free, minimal llama server that encourages TEAM PLAY would be worth it.

I've been following PS off and on since PC Gamer released an artical on it back in there December 2000 issue. I was excited about it for a few months and really didn't follow it closely untill about November and December of 2002 when I jumped on the forum wagon here and a few of the other sites. And I've been following it closely ever since. It's like Sturm said you can go nuts waiting for the game to come out. Just look at Team Fortress 2 and Duke Nukem Forever see what I mean.

I've been following PS since early last year but I wasn't really into the forums and what not until I stopped playing Tribes 2 competatively. Being engulfed in the world that is Tribes is a very demanding addiction. http://smilies.networkessence.net/s/contrib/ed/laugh.gif

To quote Dave himself:
"After Exclusive Open Beta, we'll have a General Open Beta. "General" means that we'll be putting as many able-bodied gamers onto the servers at once as possible. This is a true stress of both server loads and the macro-gamebalancing that happens in the game. It's also the point in the beta process when folks will be generally just "playing the game" instead of focusing on certain areas of the game for testing."
This sounds pretty no-holds-barred to me.

Well I found out about this game 2 weeks ago suprisingly by one of my friends telling me about SWG which i thought might be cool but i dont really like star wars because they have made way to many games about star wars already they've kind of blown star way out of proportion. I don't really like the light saber any ways i'd rather have a vanu magrider and use its main cannon against a jedi and see if he can use his force against that...
Well anyways when i seen PS after i was done looking at SWG i was stoked! Since I've always been into FPS games anyways i thought this is it... this is the one... the game I've been waiting for so now I've been telling everyone i know about that likes FPS games.
Later guys...

"we'll be putting as many able-bodied gamers onto the servers at once as possible."
Your right, we don't know what it means exactly.
However, I think it is more likely that, "As many...as possible," means that they will get as many people as they possibly can instead of meaning that they are being selective. ;)

or the selection is just weeding out the dial-up's because they prolly won't mail out a disc for it thus requireing you to d/l the whole thing.

Yea, I read a tiny article on it in a PCGAMER mag AGES ago (about 1 1/2 - 2 years ago). I thought "This game is gonna rule". I kepted checking out the website now and again, i've always been following it but i've really been gettin into alot more during mid last year. I happened to forget all about PS for about a month (busy with somet, cant remember) and that happened to be the time when they had the closed beta apps up :/. I dont think i would of been able to run on my 56k, 800Mhz 128mb ram etc :P.
Navaron
2003-01-17, 10:34 PM
No offense to the 56kers - I just got DSL this last year myself- but I think it is times that Comp games, especially MMO's, should follow the XBOX, and put minimum requirements as DSL. It's just the way to go, and makes for a much more enjoyable experience. There's always a separation pain with burgeoning technology, and I think PS is a great vehicle to pass through that pain.
Well the best thing is seperate servers for 56k and less and others for DSL/Cable and higher.
High speed connections hate playing with low speed for fear of getting lagged up and low speed connections will always complain about low ping bastards. Best to just split them up. :)

I've been driving myself insane, whoring the forums, since they first went public with PlanetSide and fired up the official forums. That would place it around November of 2000. I'm not exactly sure why I have been in the forums day after day, when so many others have left. Just stupid I guess..lol
And as for Beta the only number I have ever seen Dave confirm, both publicly and privately is 1000 initial testers. If I remember correctly they had over 40,000 applicants. Of those only 13000 were acceptable. Of those only 1000 would be selected. In this case I would much prefer Vichio be right though since it would increase my odds of getting in.
