This title of this thread is to catch ppl's attention no offens....
The reason I don't build my own comp is that I can't solve the noise problem, so I brought a Dell 8300.
Most self build comp can't beat the dell comp in noise level... If you have a self-build computer that is not as loud as hell, plz post and tell me what case you use and what kind of fans you use and plz give as much detail as you can...

to tell you the truth my comp is kinda load but i need it like that for now with the ocing that i have, but for a good quiet case get a nice one like a cheming or somthing low decible fans rubber vibration dampaners for them, silent psu, and a Fan speed controler so you can up the Speed when you need it. frozencpu.com and xoxice.com are goo PCmodding/cooling stores

My comp is self built and pretty loud. When its under my desk I hardly notice it at all. But you couldnt get me to trade it in for a dell. Theres things in it that dell no dell will ever have =)

Your right, my self made computer was pretty loud, until I stuffed the couple of hundred dollars I saved into my ears, now all I hear is my own contented sigh. ;)
Seriously though, self made computers can be louder, but if you learn some tricks (like the placement of small amounts of masking tape in key place to stop vibration) then its not bad at all, considering how much cheaper it is.
Just my 2 cents, or in this case, couple of hundred dollars. :p

Its tought for any home built PC thats got good cooling to compete against a Dell in air flow noise levels. Dell has some great fan duct cooling configs. But for just general PC noise, Dell's tend to have this high whine to them. Every morning I turn on 2 in a completely quiet room and its easy to tell. One is a brand new Dell desktop and the other a new Dell workstation.
If you want really really quiet, get a koolance case.

I have 5 fans running in my case right now, + the power supply fan. It's pretty quiet..admittedly louder than a store-bought.. but oh so much more powerful (and the money I saved makes up for the noise...built it myself)
Mines quiet, don't even notice it unless the lights are out and I'm just laying there then I can notice it. But I forgot where I got my case from.

Mine sounds like a hurricane and can out roar my Bionaire air ioniser/purifier which is rated to clean a very large room. It's something you have to live with unless you want to pay an arm and a leg for expensive fans, huge heatsinks and noise dampening kits.
My suggestion is to get a decent set of HEADPHONES (not earphones) These will give the best stereo sound quality you're ever going to get, and block out the majority of the PC's racket.
you could also put the PC under your desk on a carpeted surface, or put an old jumper or tshirt underneath it. (make sure you don't block any vents.

I'm not sure about Dell is more $$$ than a self-build... I recently got a dell 8300 2.6HT 9800 no pro 512MB 80 GB and 48X CDRW for $645 after $200 rebate... I don't think you can build a similar one at that price... After viewing all the post I guess self-build comp is loud and to solve the problem, you need lots $$$$ and tweaks (like duck tape fans). I agree that self-build is better than a dell if you know how to config your comp... pre-build comp usually pre-load many useless programs, which eat up huge amount of Ram space... I hate spend my time to turn them off or spend time looking for the turn off option or spend time trying to delete those useless programs. I guess for gamers, one of the most important things is to save RAM space. Welll..... thanks for all your inputs... I guess I still would preferre a Dell over a self build...even though I have to spend lots time to reconfig my new Dell....

My computer is home built. It is somewhat loud (I turn it off at night), but it doesn't bother me when I know I saved a LOT of money and got to customize it more by building my own. Something I did notice that helped though was lining the inside with the sound padding that you can buy from xoxide.com. Its kinda expensive, but it worked well.

Let me said this again. Pre-Build Dell is cheaper than Self-build if you wait for good deals ... with similiar hardward...
My computer may be loud as hell for all I know.
However, I dont, as there is not a single damn second I'm at the computer that there is not music drowning it out.

You Could use sound dampaning foam like Dynamat but it will increase tempatures. Also Dell computers are a bitch to upgrade due to the propiertary parts used.

ya, the big companies only want you to updgrade things like momory and cards and HD's some companies solder in the Prossesor and make it so the mb will short out in any other case(or so i've heard)

Packard Hells were notorious for that. When you build your own PC, you buy the right parts and are sure that you're installing a Radeon 9800pro with what you want on it, instead of relying on Dell to find the cheapest 9800pro and installing it.
If you do a little research and type into google "how to quiet noisy computer cases" (egads, that's too many words to type!!!!) you'll figure out easy and worthwhile ways to quiet your PC. I have 6 fans inside my case (4 front, 2 rear) with 2 fans on my power supply. I can't hear my PC most of the time because I place it underneath my desk and to my right. I know my case is nice and cool (runs around 40 degrees C) with a non-OC'd 2200+. I'm happy with it.

Yeah, dells are some of the worst comps for upgrading(I have one). Theres only 2 mem slots! They are great if u are more of a casual comp user, and not so much a gamer, because Dell has great deals on pre-builts, but once u start customizing they get SOOO expensive.

How do you know that Dell use cheap 9800pro and how do you are know that you brought the best 9800pro. Plz think about this... if you are Michael Dell (founder of Dell... he is a college drop-out), I am sure that you will spend millions of dollar in test and research a computer before you sell them to customers. That is Why Dell is making more money than other Computer companies like HP or compq!!!!
All I know is that Dell is better than other pre-build comp and Dell are pretty reliable and the price is cheaper than self-build and better case. I spent $850-$200 rebate =$650!!! on a Dell 8300 Intel 875P chip set with 2.6HT, 9800 non pro, 80GB, 48X CDRW, 512 RAM(2x256 400mhz), on board sound card, and 6 month free AOL internet access.. Plz build one at that price!!!!!!

Well... I did a little bit of research, which is what I have expected... You have to spend $$$$$$$$$$$$ to have quiet self-build comp.... with that money I can buy 100 Dell 8300 or 10 9800XT (hehehe....)

I have an self-build 2200+ and I put it underneath my desk too.... I can't hear my PC most of the time(when I using my comp), except when I go to sleep.. I can hear the fuking CPU fan making love with my CPU... and it drives my nutz!!!!!!!! I need a quiet comp that I can go to sleep with shuting it down... I need to keep my comp on so I can down loan files...

No sht......... you have a cheap Dell.... probably an Deminsion 2400... Cheap Dell are not for gamers... get a 4600 or 8300 or XPS all of them have 4 slots for memory upgrade...
They are great if u are more of a casual comp user, and not so much a gamer, because Dell has great deals on pre-builts, but once u start customizing they get SOOO expensive.
get sooo expensive???? how is it different between upgrading a self-build and I Dell (except for 2400)? I hate pre-build is because pre-build have useless pre-loaded programs that would eat up the RAM... You have to spend lots time in learning how to turn them off or remove them with-out mess-up you comp... Dell is the cheapest good pre-build comp on the market...

If you get a good deal on its i say buy it, it makes sence for me to do what you did, but i prefer to have a bit more control. My family has bouht 2 gateways and i think they work fine and were perfect for our needs but i wanted a comp and idn't have the money to get one prebuilt they way i wanted it.
i like my new cooler it lets me turn its fan speed way way down(to 0), the real key to cool is a FAn speed sontroler obtainable for $30 buck or so.

That is true... self-build have better and more control over your comp...

But theres nothing like unupgradability like a compaq!
(compact+qaulity!)
Its a way of life for prebuilt companies to make every cut they can and still say they ahve the product(offbrand version) so they can get you go buy it. So you think you can look at it like a car in your descision. they get cheaper versions of every part almost always for the name, and cause youll never know hte difference unless you know how to tell. They can get the stuff and build cheaper version themselves cause it has the part eh card is known for or pay someone else too, or get modified parts for less, or blah blah blah.
They cant advertise good stuff and afford putting all of them in for the prices they set, which there bussiness are dependent on(the prices not the parts).
Not to mention doing this allows them to say some of the stuff is there brand stuff and getting people to trust them more.
Blame the mid 90's and the companies still standing, cause, they started this in the first place and have been riding it ever since.

As far as upgrading the Dell -
His MB may or may not support Prescott's. It stands a very good chance of working with them though. As such, he will be able to upgrade his CPU for quite a while.
Also there is no reason he won't be able to upgrade his video card for quite some time. He won't be able to put in PCI-Express cards, thats about it.
Ram also won't be a problem for years, as it has room. And Dell's aren't really all that picky on RAM, as long as its good name brand stuff. Kingston works really WELL with them.
Drives are also np to upgrade.
So don't see any serious issues there. In 2/3 years when he can't upgrade anymore, believe me it'll be time for a new system totally anyway.
Also Dell has a top of the line research department. They did some really cool stuff way back in the day with Voodoo cards and even now make their own ATI drivers that often perform better than normal cat's. Some people are stuck back in the day of HP's, PB's, etc. Dell has always been decent, as long as you don't buy their cheapest model.
