Yeah i've recently discovered that i have a lot of free time when I'm not either A. gokarting, B. doing stuff with friends, C. at improv class orD. doing homework/going to physical therapy. Most of this time is spent playing planetside or whoring PSU. So I was thinking about getting a new hobby mainly paintball since my best friend really likes it and alot of kids at my school do it too. I've been once with my church group, but i got a few questions for all the paintball buffs, answers would be appreciated.
A. I remember when i went 2 or 3 years ago that it hurt pretty bad when i got hit. My friend told me it was because the rental guns have no holes for the Co2 to go out of. He said it hurts less when you use a good gun. How much does it hurt in comparison? ( i dont want to have huge welts all over)
B. What's the average cost to get started and the cost to maintain supplies (paint and co2)
C. Are there a lot of teams to be joined and tournaments to participate in usually?
That's it for now if you wanna post additional info, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance

it depends how much you wanna spend:
$100-$200- Spyder Imagine w/ 12oz CO2
$200-300- Spyder Electra DX w/ 20oz CO2
$300-400-maybe a 2001 Impulse
most of the time you buy paint at the place you play, but I always keep about 1000 Diablo Dusk in case I feel like it
Paintballs do hurt, but if you wear a few layers its not bad. you get used to it. especcially if you wear a thick DYE jersey like me.
paintball aint cheap. nitro tanks alone cost about 400-600. heres what I have:
http://www.shop4paintball.com/isroot/Stores/Shop4Paintball/SiteImages/01WORROUTKASTBLACK_500.jpg
Autococker Outkast($500)
4500 psi Nitro w/ regulator {Carbon Fiber} valued at $400, but I got it on ebay for $200.
Halo autoloader 22 bps. ($70-110, depends where you look)
various gear, masks, jerseys, they arent expensive. heres what I recommend for starters:
cheap mask
Tippmann 98 Custom($130) (its a rental gun, but highly upgradable)
OR
Spyder Imagine($170) (gets alot right outa the box, electric trigger, LCD display)
and a 12-20 oz CO2
I wouldnt worry about buying paint or gear right away.
EDIT: Early guns require almost no matenence, maybe a squeegee through the barrel if you break a ball in-game but thats about it.
heres a good site to get stuff: http://www.paintballgear.com/
they have everything for all skill levels. dont buy at local shops, they're usually a rip off.
http://www.shop4paintball.com/Pages/Product/Tippmann_Model_98_Custom__Black_01TIPCUSTOM98B.htm l
^Great starting gun
EDIT: Anyone can play in matches but tournaments are no joke. I was in 3 over the summer. Got owned twice by some kid with a Bob Long Intimidator. theres 2 types of paintball: Indoor and Outdoor. the 2 are totally different. if you dont like to get hit, do outdoor first. I like indoor better.

they probably had their velocity too high. you should have yelled "Paint Check." If the refs find their speed too high they get kicked. barrel holes are for accuracy, not exhaust. it gets better and easier to take a hit as you go on.

naw these were all rentals man so it wasnt having their velocity turned too high, the majority had never played either. But thanks for the tips. I'm gonna look into it

I got a 1200$ spider special edition w ionized paint splash. Semi auto, triple shot burst, and full auto. You don't have to spend anywhere near that for a servicable gun.
Getting shot doesn't hurt unless it's humid out. Then the paintballs don't break as easily.
As for tournaments, just go to your local paintball shop. The owner will have info on local events.

I have a Spyder TL Plus ($224.95 USD retail, you can probably get it cheaper for sale with the holidays rolling around and all). It's a great entry-level gun. The King of entry-level guns. I also have a DYE Boomstick, which is about $100. Best barrel for that gun.
The hurting is a nonfactor, unless the fucker is using frozen balls. The shots do sting enough for you to really, really not want to get hit. However, the pain goes away momentarily. I play in the forest, and I have a Woodland Camo T-shirt and then the BDU the Army wears. (got it at a surplus store :D ). But back to the pain. Some fucker with a Tippmann, Flatline, and a response trigger pelted me with at least a dozen shots, and none broke due to cold weather. It wasn't THAT bad. The real key to avoiding big bruises is to double-layer. Yes, it will bruise, but not as bad. My brother got hit badly in the arm once. The bruise expanded to about the size of a CD. Sonofabitch probably turned up his speed, too.
Paint and CO2 vary. I wouldn't recommend a nitro setup for an entry level player. That's more advanced, and more expensive. You need a ball that won't shatter in the barrel, so too cheap is bad. However, I don't think OMG OMG LASER MADE BALLS .0000000000000001 INCH ACCURACY OMG THESE ROXOR! $3,999 is a great idea either.
However, on a field, most field require you to buy THEIR paint to prevent people freezing their paintballs and hurting others.
Frozen paintballs hurt like a motherfucker. Do not freeze yours. Don't let your friends do it.
Tourneys abound. Talk to your local dealer.

Thats exactly what i have. And i find a pickup game with friends is just about the best damn fun you can have. Just stay away from Brass Eagle or anything pretty much for Walmart. They are all plastic and will break easy, specially when it gets cold.
And for squeeky, think Planetside, but real life. Or any FPS really. Just more real life, plus the running and the hiding and actual strategy AND tactics. Terrain plays a big part.

I prefer doing soft air guns... They looks like the real thing and they have alot of models... heck you can get grenades refillable too!
Anyhoo if you wanna check it out!

That's only one site... gas blow back act like real guns and they kick back while the other will most likely stay and not move at all... it's your choice really realism over accuracy?

Describe Airsoft looks like something the military would use instead of live rounds can u actually have a game with these?
I wouldn't dream of taking a replica handgun full of BB's and having a game with this ... and the chance of someone bringing a real gun is to high
SO wtf is Airsoft more details plz
*edit Okay i found the FAQ But dam man that still sounds insane!
and can't you still get in trouble having one of these guns im not familar with the european gun laws

well to give more detail about the day I went, i remember it was in early spring and it was raining. It was pretty cold (like 50). and i remember getting hit once in the wrist and once in the leg. The wrist hurt like crazy as did the leg, but i also got hit in the arm at the beginning and the paintball didnt break. I figured that would hurt more but it didnt hurt more than being flicked.

yea sometimes if its cold enough and you're not very warm paintballs hurt. the wrist is one of the worst places to get hit, if its unprotected.

which indeed it was. left a bruise for 3 weeks, while the leg shot knocked me to the ground but pain subsided in 1 or 2 minutes

I really hate to brag, but I have what is considered by most professional players to be the best gun on the market. (I play professionaly too) The Matrix LCD marker is as quiet as a mouse click (compaired to an angels loud but really not really loud poping). It is statisticly the most accurate gun on the market. It also is the second fastest (only the angels which are 1000 more can out shoot my gun) - 26.2 balls persecond. (All those elctro frames that shoot for you are for pansys who cant pull the trigger fast, I pull at around 18 - 20 bps. The gun is NOT automatic. Tournies dont let you use assisted firing modes, its all up to your hand.) The gun has an interchangable breach which means I can put any barrel on it. The gun shoots with an internal pressure of around 65 psi (compaired to everything else on this list which shoot at 200 or more, PS less is best). That means I can hold a paintball in the breach and in the feed at the same time and TRY to chop the paint. It wont do it.
http://www.thematrixcenter.com/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=24&idproduct=127-Keep in mind that this is bare bones gun. Mine is tricked out. (custom milling, old school volumizers, better inline reg, bolt kit)
Next on the list is 2 Zues G2's from Armotech. I have all the addons you can get with them and then some of my own.
http://www.armotech.com/product/wargame/Zeus-main.asp
The next two guns are used in senario games only. I dont use them indoor speed ball and tournaments. The Matrix and Zues' are for that. The '65 is my outdoor primary. The '75 is my indoor primary b/c its shorter. (its worn on back outdoors but when I move into a town I switch up) The pistols also come with me with 4 extra clear 10 round tubes for each in custom stitched holsters.
Next up is the Armotech WG-65 (an M4/ M16 replica) with all the addons (note all addons for this are interchangeable with the WG-75)
http://www.armotech.com/product/wargame/65-main.asp - keep in mind on this one that I can make the gun look like any of them and more
Next is WG-75 which is a MP-5 Replica.
http://www.armotech.com/product/wargame/75-main.asp

Just be smart and buy a tippmann 98 Custom beginners package and try to get a 20oz CO2 Tank. Co2 for the most part is really cheap I get my 20oz tank filled for 2.50 and thats about 800-1000 shots I believe. When you buy paintballs be sure you gonna play a bunch of times and buy like 2000 online from http://www.888paintball.com or something
they also sell guns and beginner packages as well, this is where I order my stuff.

The Tippmann is a formidable opponent. Mainenance is a bitch, you have to literally crack the gun in half to clean. However it shoots well. NOTE: Avoid the Flatline barrel. It's curved to make balls go farther, but it will break a lot of balls in the barrel. It gets VERY dirty. However the accuracy is very good.
I have heard Spyders are unreliable, and mine froze up on me a few times but it was because I was firing like a madman and it was cold.
Another thing that I personally avoid is an automatic hopper. It has a spinning propeller type thing to make the balls go down faster. It works, but it can also blend your balls. Not fun. I don't have one.
I get my stuff from this old guy who I think was a Vietnam vet. He owns a surplus store. He can change from Hispanic to Veteran instantly.

uh theyre actually not plastic, theyre soluable balls made of vegetable oil
i have my own speedball field where i play with my friends, one has a Matrix LED, the other a Rat Impulse LCD, really nice guns, i use one of their tippys

dont listen to any of that. dont buy delta pistols, they're useless. the Armortech WG-65 is cool but not a real paintball gun. dont show him the matrix if hes starting out, its a $900 gun. btw, laser sights, or added sights of any kind are pointless and stupid. they're poser products. your Matrix LCD does not have 22 bps. theres no hopper out there that can keep up with that. not even the halo a or b. use www.shop4paintball.com

thanks so far for your input i'm going to try it out with my friend when he hopefully comes down this month from NC.
One thing that i heard from him (may not be true) but he said that if people freeze the paintballs and then hit you in the right place in your head it can kill you. Is this true? However he also said that its impossible to truly "freeze" a paintball, that you can make it really really cold but the only way to get a true freeeze effect would be to shoot it like right as you take it out of the freezer.

The only way to get seriously hurt is to take off your mask and get shot in the eye. NEVER TAKE OFF YOUR MASK. NEVER PLAY WITHOUT ONE.
Do not go cheap on your mask. If you can't see, you can't shoot. Goggles don't cut it.
Frozen paintballs could concievably fracture an unmasked player, but I don't think it would penetrate through.
Kikinchikin

right well he was saying if you got hit in the back of the head where some masks dont protect. Frankly if there is any risk involved with that, I will just buy a full head mask.

yes if the gun is cronoed high with freezed balls it probably can kill you if you get hit in the temple. they usually check all the paintballs you use to make sure they're not frozen.

Do some research man, halo B and A feed at 22.6 bps. Warp feed can feed at 28 something bps. The WG-65 IS a paintgun, it shoots PAINTBALLS. Its just a sim gun.
I dont have delta's the Zues G2's are better (barrel extensions and such). The laser sights are worth something. They are extremly bright and I can shoot off the hip with the sight and be fairly accurate (on the Zues Pistols they rock). The scopes are for looks and looking at ppl from a long way. But u can use it to snipe if theres no wind. Dont call things poser products if u dont know what ur talkin about. They add realism to the weapon. ITS A SIM GUN. Getting laser sights on a speedball gun is pointless. But puting that stuff on a gun that is biult for it for ppl who wanna show off. I am an experienced 10 year player of paintball. dont even think of tryin to shoot me down.
