View Full Version : Your first certs, and why?

The max certs you can have is 21 at level 20. You start out with 2 certs...
Info by PSU
Standard Assault
Pistols and light rifles (AMP, empire-specific pistol (Beamer, Repeater, Scatterpistol), and Suppressor). (NOTE: This is a default certification. Everyone gets this one.)
Standard Issue
Everyone gets this default certification. It's a standard-issue light armor with capacity for a pistol and rifle.
So I'm guessing you start out at level 1 with those 2 certs. You go into the sim, and get to level 5. You now have 6 certs.
1st Character Certifications:
Standard Assault Weapon
Medium Assault Weapon
Heavy Assault Weapon
Standard Issue Armor
Agile Armor
Reinforced Armor
Next will be MAX
2nd Character Certifications:
Standard Assault Weapon
Standard Issue Armor
Wraith
Basilisk
Harasser
Marauder
3rd Character Certifications:
Standard Assault Weapon
Standard Issue Armor
Mosquito
Reaver
Galaxy
Combat Engineering
4th Character Cerfifications:
Standard Assault Weapon
Standard Issue Armor
Agile Armor
Reinforced Armor
Medical
Advanced Medical
But I think these certs will take more than one cert point. I don't see any character starting out with that much stuff.

Hard to say without knowing numbers, but I'd head directly for Infiltration Suit, and then for Hacking, and then for a Wraith. Depending on how much that "armor" can hold, and how the cert really works, I'd then procede to Combat Engineering, and perhaps fill out the rest of my spots with various vehicle certs. I'd not take any other Armor or Weapon certs though.

Straight for the vehicle certs. Shooting people is all fine and good, but I'd rather be a driver.
Despite the fact that ***920;***968;***928;***920;***1071;1***928;***287; the opposition is the point of PS, I'd rather develop a reputation in-game for being a 'get you there and back again' driver-pilot.

i read that you can hang around in VR training for awhile (like bep lvl. 5), if so, i'd hang around for a couple levels so that i could get med. armor, med. aslt., medical and adv. medical. if light armor is a pre-req., then i might stop there and then get another level knocking off hostiles. after that it'd be light armor (if it's not pre-req.) and vehicles there-after

Rein
Med-Assault(Gauss)
Special Assault(Thumper)
Hacking
Buggy, not sure which, probably harrasser.

Infiltration Suit and Hacking. Followed by vehicle certs.

It will depend on my role within the platoon, but my first prefs: medium assault, reinforced armor, medical, advanced medical.
Shyfted One

Reinforced
Medium Assault (Gauss)
Heavy Assualt (Jackhammer)
Medical
Hacking
I'd then grab some more weapon certs and then get the advanced med and hacking. I want the other weapon certs incase we hit a lot of vehicles or I feel like launching a volley of nades everywhere :D And it never hurts to be able to use any weapon your enemy drops.
My 2nd character would go
Infiltration
Wraith
Medical
Advanced Medical
(whatever cert is needed to drive the AMS)
What I plan on doing is beind a very difficult to see med :) I'll be going around healing/reviving guys on the battlefield while the enemy wonders what the hell is going on when people start popping back up :D I just hope I can fit a sonewhat decent amount of med applicators and canisters so I don;t have to amke as many trips from the AMS.

Well, My overall goal is to get something like
Reinforced
Punisher/Cycler
Lightning
Galaxy
Adv. Medical
I honestly cannot say what would be my first certs, because its hard to tell what the chain is for what I want to get.
I will have to wait and see what would best help my squad, in order to decide what the first certs will be.

6. medical
7. adv. hacking
8. Another vehicle
9. Another vehicle

depends on which armors can get into what for me. I would like to do reinforced, galaxy, basalisk and medium weps but it matters onj if reinforced can get into basalisk.
My first cert will probably be a reaver or mosquito. After that i'll head straight for enemy terrority and frag some peeps. Then from time to time i'll head back to VR to get more certs but i'll most likely get them from in game action, VR doesn't interest me much other than being able to try everything out.

Well i would assume no, if med armor can't use all vehicles it seems to me the tiny basilisk will be one of those.

I'm just going to take most likley the basic certs for weapons, and the basic armors, and what not, then work for Hacking, then to Adv. Hacking. Thats my goal..

Where'd you come up with the "start out with 2 certs" thing? Is that from da devs, or just the rules for this thread?

Here's a few pre-reqs. REMEMBER...these are subject to change as we go forward in beta. Be prepared for those changes.
That being said:
You have to buy Agile Armor before being able to buy any other armors. This seems like trouble, but it's actually very good. It makes your character much more flexible. However, it costs a few points. Each config of a MAX is currently a separate cert also. (anti-vehicle, anti-air, anti-infantry).
You typically have to buy a "base model" cert to get "advanced" versions of the same vehicle. For instance, the Marauder is really a heavy buggy. Therefore you usually have to certify with Harasser before you can certify in Marauder. Lightning is still a pre-req for the heavier tanks also.
Some certs are quite obvious that you need a pre-req. For instance, you need Hacking before you can certify in Advanced Hacking.
Air vehicles don't have pre-reqs, but they do have larger cert costs because of how useful they are.
I think that covers most of it.
Remember...this is all subject to change.
BTW...my usual play style is to be the biggest thorn in the enemy's side as possible. Thus, I typically go Agile/Wraith/Infiltration/Combat Engineering/Hacking/Adv Hacking. There's a few others (I'm always attracted to Repair), but that's the basic "SmokeJumper" template. I rely on knives and grenades, as well as the "generosity of others" (e.g., their corpse loot). I tend to pick up either Surge or Regen implants once I get to Rank 6, and I swap them back and forth depending on whether I'm deploying or running saboteur raids.
My other character (name undisclosed) is more of a vehicle-centric person with a tendency toward offense (AMS/Agile/Reinforced/MAX anti-vehicle/Medium Assault/Special Assault and I pick up Second Wind and/or Personal Shield implants usually.).
This will probably all change as I change with the game, but that's what I play currently.
Tip when you get into the game: DO THE TRAINING! You get xp enough by exploiting the training to get your first couple of battle ranks...which gives you more cert points to spend.

Oh yeah...I think there's a weapons pre-req also. I'm pretty sure you have to take Medium Assault Weapons to get to the Special Assaults, Anti-Vehicular and Sniper categories. Not sure...but I think so. Again...this is subject to change.

So much information! Hamma, do you think you could improve the cert tree for PSU with some of this info? would help out anyone new to Planetside.
Hamma
2003-01-22, 05:59 PM
Yes indeed ;)
Ok in case he comes back. :)
2 things. You say you swap implants? Can you do that instantly and change them in a few seconds or is there a time limit on it ? If we do the training later on do we still get same amount of XP, i'm assuming yes but just in case. :)

If I remember correctly changing implants is as simple as drag and drop - course I never looted any implants, only put them in at an implant station.

Loot implants? Eww! Sounds messy. Need a :blowchunks: smiley. Something like: >0===*
Oh, and as for certs?
Char 1: commander type guy
Shortest path between starting character and an AMS, followed by shortest path to a MAX.
Char 2: tank guy
Lightening
engineering
(plus mbt, and anything else that might make this guy an uber-tanker)
Char 3: medic
medic
advanced medic
(plus medium assault, agile suit, reinforced suit, followed by whatever squad-support stuff I can come up with... basic eng for armor repair, that sort of thing)

Hamma?
Do you remember how you chose your certs? How many points did you start with, and how much did various things cost?
I'm not expecting you to remember every cost of every cert, I'd just like to know a ballpark range kind of thing.
And I haven't made any rodent/Hamma references lately... unlike some other people who just can't let the lake thing go. ;)

I will get Infil suit first, then Engineering, then ADV engineering (It would be cool to cloak in enemy base and plant explosives  )Then hacking, then Adv hacking... then I don't know

In the context he used, he meant that he'd pick either Surge or Regen prior to going on a mission. If the mission is a Sabotage oriented one, he'd pick X implant. If it's a combat mission, he'd pick Y implant. Although you may be able to change in the field, the way he said it looked very much to the contrary.
Well i didn't mean in the field either, i just thought implants were like certs once u have it you stick with it or at the very least you have to wait a while before picking a new one.

I dont remember how many points I had - I just know I was at max rank and had max points.
When I played, some things cost 1cert points, some 2, some 3.

There's no question that given his reply you are able to switch implants, and quickly too might I add.
