This (http://secure.newegg.com/app/shoppingcart.asp?submit=view) will be my new comp. It will be my first time building it myself. If you guys know about this stuff please review what I've got there and see if I picked out quality stuff.

I get a shopping cart empty. Newegg used to allow you to link to your wishlist, but not anymore. Just copy/paste it here.

Not bad. Quickly skimmed through. Why not, instead of getting a DVD-RW drive and a CD-RW drive, combine the two and get a DVD-RW+ CD-R combo drive. Could save you some $$.

Why do you want to get one 40GB drive (ATA assumed) and a 120GB drive (SerialATA)? Why not get an 80Gb SATA drive? Better performance and an additional 40Gb of storage. You could then dedicate your two IDE channels seperately to your DVD drive and your DVD-RW/CD-RW drive.

Well it messed it up when I copied it its actually 2 120 gig satas. The 40 gig for windows system files, and the 2 120s for a RAID 0 array. I'll check into that combo drive thanks.

God, I can only dream of a computer like that.

Sentrosi
2003-11-08, 10:51 PM
much better. I thought it was a typo, but just double checking.

Yeah, setting up the drives with a RAID 0 config is badass. And keeping all your windows files on the 40GB is nice too. I got a spare 40GB lying around. Might have to just reformat my C: drive and throw that puppy in, giving me 200GB of storage capacity. I've just become too lazy to do it til now.

im a bit confused but, the live is equivelant to a live 5.1 and just short of a audigy so theres no point to the sound card.

Smaug
2003-11-09, 01:09 AM
Yeah I'm using onboard audio now

Sentrosi
2003-11-09, 07:49 AM
Actually, on-board sound does take away processor 'power'. Always better to go with a sound card rather than using on-board sound. You'll also have a capable backup in case something fries your sound card.

Indeed :D. I've changed my mind again and for 30 bucks you can't go wrong.

that is good, but get a gig of Corsair XMS pro, that stuff is suposed to rock, and it doen't seem like you have a small budget

EDIT, put the 2 120's into a raid 1 array and get alot more preformance, yuse that for the programs and system files and use the 40 for everything else (INCLUDING YOU PAGE FILE, if your page file is on a separate drive from you program files and is on a separate channel you will see a nice prefomance upping)

That set-up kicks ass, I have the same Mobo, and speakers, but I use onboard audio, it's not that bad.

I actually am getting a gig of ram it just didn't copy correctly from the site.

Nah dude Raid 1 is a mirrored array. Meaning the second drive is an exact copy of the first. A Raid 0 array is where it uses the 2 drives as if it were one whole drive, and it has increased read/write performance.

Rbstr
2003-11-09, 08:02 PM
raid 1 's not a mirroded arry, unless i'm getting my numbers mixed up, its the one that spreds the data basicalt every other unit(bit byte whatever) so it can be faster accessing, raid 0 is just acting like the drives are one disk but no preformance enhancing stuff

Sentrosi
2003-11-09, 08:09 PM
Raid does not improve performance or security, it is for adding extra hard drives. (up to 8 drives). Raid 0 gives high security with low performance. Raid 1 gives high performance with low security. Raid 0 has no affect on performance and security. Raid 1 improves both performance and security. Raid 0 allows faster performance but no increase in data security. Raid 1 gives a high degree of data security.

Comments:
Price > performance
I think the 3200 cpu is a over kill.
I mean AMD is spending all their money and man power to develop their 64bits chips. which mean they will stop develop thier old 32 bits cpu.
I don't think you should spend that much money on a 3200+ cpu.
get a 2500+ $90 (much cheaper)
save that extra mony and get a 64 bits cpu 6 months later.

Smaug
2003-11-10, 02:00 AM
I've changed the setup alot since then so its much more efficient.

RAID 0 Takes the 2 or more drives in the array and makes them act like a single drive. This drive has the read/write performance of almost 1 drive multiplied by the number of drives. RAID 1 takes the 2 drives and mirrors them, Whatever is written on the first drive is written on the second.

Sentrosi
2003-11-10, 03:05 AM
Yes,

Raid 1 = higher security bad performance.

Raid 0 = Lower security high performance.
