View Full Version : Urban Combat in Core Combat

Is it just me or is there absolutely no urban combat in Core Combat? 'Urban' implies a city. Cities are generally places of habitation. The caverns look like alien bases or facility clusters or something, but absolutely do not resemble an urban environment. I was hoping for apartments with coffee tables and maybe pictures on the walls, parks with fountains, malls, or anything that would resemble an urban environment. Ok, so it's an alien city, put some alien furnishing in the alien houses if that's what it takes. The caverns are cold and sterile.

I think people wanted to get away from the sterile, impersonal, cold surface bases and get into an environment where all those cool urban fighting tactics would pay off, but CC just doesn't do it.

I wonder why they billed it as 'urban combat'. I wonder why they rushed it. If I were the lead producer on PlanetSide, I would make CC free and apply the purchase price to the monthly fee for people who had already bought it. Three new vehicles, three new weapons and modules that kinda suck just isn't worth the price of a brand new game. Is it? Nah. They really pushed this one out the door and I can't figure it out. It's likely to keep new players away from PlanetSide, because if they have to buy the game, they can expect to tack on another $30 for CC to be competitive (well, ok, you don't need CC to be competitive in any way, shape or form, but new players might not know this).

In short, as a big PlanetSide fan, Core Combat has me stumped and a bit frustrated. Not only did it fail to expand the game, the new bugs and performance degradation rather deflated it. Something must be done if PlanetSide is to maintain its reputation. You know something is wrong when a free trial of your expansion turns out to generate a wave of people who say "CC is just not worth it".

Purely my opinion as someone who has thoroughly tested Core Combat and who knows what kind of games are out there that cost just over $30.

It's odd. I have CC and have only visited the caverns once since getting it and have not missed anything, as far as I know.

CC while being compelling when there is actually *PEOPLE* in the cavern, is a ripp off. I felt duped by the money I paid for it.

I've heard people talk about how the new base benefits you get from the caverns is the point of Core Combat, and that there (generally) isn't a reason to go down there. Since they've had that 7 day free trial going on I've made a point to visit the caverns a few times, and each time has been utter disappointment. Once I was the only TR there (on a cont filled with TR) and getting waxed by both the NC and the VS down there, and the other times there seems to be a few people around but you rarely see each other.
If the point of CC was the new base benefits, they shouldn't have pushed urban style combat as a part of the game. The caverns are barren and the new weapons are certainly not worth $30. I can guarantee I won't be shelling out the money for the expansion, although I certainly appreciate SOE allowing me to play it for a week to know for sure.

I think by urban combat they mean lots of different levels, lots of places to hide, lots of places an ambush can happen, lots of corners.

I will admit I have never seen alot of people down there, but I have enjoyed every trip in.

oh and killin' reaves in the ancient sentry turret is worth my $30.

Biggest mistake they ever made was referring to it as "urban" combat. As soon as they said that CS junkies from all over immediately thought they were going to get to tear through office buildings, apartments, stores and back streets of a modern day city. Throwing a scene like something from downtown New York into PS wouldn't fit even a little bit if you think about it though. What they should have called it was close quarters combat. Amazing what semantics can unintentionally do.

In a sense it does feel "urban" in that there are lots of levels and plenty of places to hide. CC is fun when you actually run into others to fight. The action can be very intense. I can't think of any good ways to keep the caverns populated though. I'm usually lucky to find one or two others down there and when that's the case all you do is hack facilities from each other. Very little actual combat takes place. Usually, you just wind up alone with nobody to stop you from taking modules to the surface.

ive been wandering around in the caverns and relized this isnt urban combat...this is gorrilla combat, with all those ziplines going through, you can get from one place to another without hveing to deal with much enemy oposition they need toreduce the amounts of ziplines and choose better locations for were they go

There is still no reason to go into the caverns, so they remain empty. And as for urban combat.. no there isnt "Urban" combat per say, but it is more close quarters than above ground.

Purchasing CC early may have been a mistake...There's no one in the caverns, all the bugs and such. But, I think that in the future, all the bugs will be fixed and more and more people will buy Core Combat and there will be eventually large scale battles underground. So I think that I perhaps should have waited awhile to buy CC but I think that in the future, it will pay off.

As for Urban style combat, am I the only person who invisioned BUILDINGS down there?

Definition of Urban (In dictionary): having to do with cities or towns.

Definition of Combat (Also in dictionary): fight against; oppose in battle

So in other words, Urban combat should be fighting inside cities or towns. Not, fighting in large caverns with many cliffs and such.

I agree. I don't think I wasted my $30.00. I have fun in the caverns and playing all the weapon/vehicle add-ons. I don't they intended to say directy "urban combat" but more like "urban style" its a close quarters battle 90% of the time so that qualify's as "close quarts like in a city" so to speak. Not exactly "in a city".

main problem is not that there isn't a reason to be underground (perminent links to outside hacking on backyard continents untill it reopens is reason enough in my opinion) just that people won't buy it because they think its worthless. But Im sorry I have fun with it and will keep going in ;)

I agree with you on the part about it not being "urban" combat. I was for some reason picturing buildings like from BF 1942. All crumbled and decimated streets etc. I suppose i forgot this is a futuristic game.

Since we're on the subject on how we feel about CC here's my analysis.

Worth the 30: No, more like 20 or 15. Maelstrom is kool as crap, radiator and spiker are insignificant to me, switchblade is fun, flail is stupid IMO, and router is not used by hardly neone. So overall the weapons and vehicles cannot come close to making CC worth it.
Caverns: Love the way they are designed. They are absolutely gorgeous to look at, however there is only a fight in there 50 percent of the time i go in there. However, when i do it is some of the most fun fights ever. Other day I invaded drugaskan with just 6 people from my outfit, we attracted more to come since we owned 5 continents with no invasions happening. We got up to about 25 people versus 30 vanu. It was a very fun and long battle. Some of the best battles occur in caverns, its all about luck and being on at the right time.
Modules: Not even worth getting. When i take my squad down there, I do it simply because there is a fun fight. With the modules not mattering any more than they do now, and with no xp for capping buildings (not a problem for many including myself, but a lot have xp as their priority) there is generally no point in going down there unless just to have fun.

Anywho if you can find a good sized battle you are going to have a lot of fun. If you dont, well then the 30 bucks is more or less wasted.

Well actually they always said "urban style combat" so I was always pretty skeptical of what they were up to. Dilapidated/cratered buildings, windows to shoot through, and plausible transit methods would have gone a long way towards putting them closer to the mark. How stupid is it that in "urban style" buildings, you can't just climb up some stairs to get to the top floor? Nothing is more irritating than riding some magical zipline back and forth like a freaking monkey trying to figure out how to get to the control console. CC is lame, and definitely not worth the price of admission although I do like the twist that modules add to the surface war.

Meh, SOE probably ment...you know like, cliffs, tall "buildings", and uneven terrain. Urban. well, more urban than up on the surface. About the whole CC thing, no, I like CC, but you are right, three weapons three vehicles and a little bonus(modules) isn't worth 30$.
