I think I read another post similar to this and I cant find it now but here are a few ideas that I think would make global battles mean more and also group people together.
Basically my idea breaks down to one thing; turning all warp gates on a continent to sanctuary type warp gates i.e. faction based when you lock it. That in addition to no HART drop means if you take a continent only your empire has access to it.
You can open a Cont to your empire if you manage to Cont Lock another with a mutual warp gate.
If you lock a continent that has an enemy's Sanctuary warp gate that gate will become neutral not letting passage either way.
You can gain access to a locked continent through the caves.
As always you can HART Drop on your Empire's locked Continents or Currently disputed Continents like it is now.
I think this will give locking a continent much more meaning. There will be less "the cont is lost, retreat" mentality. People who want to go solo running around destroy enemy stuff without a significant enemy presance still can, do to the front lines and it gives their sabotage more meaning. When a continent is locked it would give the losing force a huge need for infils who would spread accross the entire continent to hide, sabotage or anything they can think of while they can still respawn on the continent. The caves would be a means to get in the "back door" to unlock a continent increasing their significance. And most importantly it would get people together because they couldnt get to any continent they wanted by taking the long way around.
If an Empire did manage to lock everything it would be a significant achievement, then it should reset to everything neutral (it is a game afterall) but I dont see a way that this could happen not with three empires all needing at least 1 neutral or empire locked cont to fight. I really dont see how any one Empire could even shut out one single empire other than increadably poor tactics and leadership.
As I see it if one empire were to take every cont but one the other two empires would join forces to kick the dominant empire, but again I dont see how any empire could lose all their locked conts but then thats what the test server is for right?
