I don't think you appreciate how many people play this game or are planning to get computer systems to be able to do so. Also, school is in full tilt, so you're seeing the lower side of the average population. You also seem unaware of the technological superiority of this software.

Just because you've played the hell out of a game, don't make the mistake of projecting a jaded attitude upon it.

PlanetSide is healthy and happy, and believe me there would be a massive outcry if it were no longer available.

i concur

sure theres been a nasty drop in population since school started up, but there are still plenty of fights. PS wont die for a good while.

Once they come up with an expansion that adds really cool stuff that's worth paying for I'm sure the game will be revitalized. I was incredibly disappointed with Core Combat, as it was lightyears behind what I was hoping they'd devise, yet at the same time, were they to make an expansion which actually adds significantly to the game, I would certainly be very excited over it.

So, hopefully their next expansion is a bit better.

I don't think this game is going anywhere. I know I'll be playing Half-Life 2 the week the game comes out, but I'm not leaving PS for HL2.

What, you want me to go back to playing on servers where the max is 32 people? HA! That's so 1999.

I don't think the next game like that won't be out until 2006, since few companies can afford or are willing to invest in the time and money it takes on such an endeavor. Sony is one of the few that can afford it, and M$ is focusing on Xbox and only releases Flight Sims for PC now, anyway.

It'll last about 6-7 months more I rekon. Maybe a year if they add something good for free. (Expansion packs that need to be bought + subscription bases game = dumb idea)

I concur. I can't imagine going back to a game that allows a max of 64 players in one server. And even then, I rarely played a game with over 50 players that didn't lag to hell. 40 was about the max playable, and that's just not enough to get me excited. And since, according to PC Gamer, there are 0 MMOFPS games even in design phase or planned right now, I imagine PS will be it for several years. I do hope someone comes along and improves on the model and makes one even better. Then I'll play that.

And I can tell you that ALOT of people in school are not playing at all right now. I've got several outfit member that have been awol since september, but said they'd play when school was out. I can think of like 5 just off the top of my head. So I think we should be patient, and see what the populations are like over Thanksgiving weekend, and winter break, then adjust our predictions. But right now, I think PS is going to be fine for a long time. I'd love more players, but it's still fun.

Consider this. Plenty of shit games still have active servers. The Delta Force series, for example. Delta Force Land Warrior was rampant with cheaters, TF: Dagger was hacked and cheat-exploited within an hour of being available online, and BlackHawk Down? Yeah lemme shut my pie-hole.

Battlefield 1942... I never really knew much about cheats for this game, and I don't recall anyone ever accusing anyone of cheating. Before that was Wolfenstein, and the same goes for that. I may be mistaken- but I never got into forum-browsing for these games, since I was using them as skill-honers for Planetside's eventual release.

But. You cannot deny the suckiness of these games COMPARED TO Planetside. Whether that be Planetside the game, Planetside the concept, Planetside That Never Was, Planetside That Which Was Promised...

You simply CANNOT beat this type and genre of game with 32-person or 64-person servers with limited weapons and "certifications", two teams, and timed missions. Only skill-less, narrowminded whining pantywaisted idiots will fail to grasp how revolutionary this concept is, how rare this concept is (at the moment), and what Planetside has done in the way of opening doors for new game types. Sure, you can play some console game with a bunch of other people, but to me? No thanks.

I'm sticking with this game for a long time to come, and I'll be the last man standing if they ever pull the plug (as in, riding the storm out, not professing eliteness).

Im playing till its gone. And then im going to be one of the people who refuses to stop paying the monthly fee till it reopens. :p

It never has to die! Its happenend in the past with other games. With games as loved as this one atleast. And they can alway redo the graphics and probly every other part of the game to keep up with graphics to keep it modern, or allow you to choose like in Homeworld so you can do the one you like.And there are thousands/Endless suttle game designs they can add to htis game to keep it forever. This game is designed to be added on to. And none of htem have to change gameplay.

I think this game is just in its innitial rev up.

They can always make the continents bigger in a few years as comps can hold more people or just add moons or other planets "in the search for the Ancients" for instance, and add more fighting worlds as well while keeping auraxis in its original game design and political situation.

Eh, anyway, in the end I doubt PS will ever die. It seems that with these games, the smaller the customer base gets, the more loyal they become. If PS ever got into a lot of trouble with low customers, they'd still be able to rely on a solid core of players who're all very proud of themselves for being able to stick it out and have fun with the game despite general dissatisfaction. So I doubt PS will ever die. Indeed, I doubt many MMOGs will ever die.

The joke is he hacked all the bases and then hes telling the guy he can tell all of the planetside users on that server they can come back on now! Implying that they all left so he could single handedly hack all the bases and take contol of them! making fun of him in hte process!

Well, PlanetSide is different from other games, I mean, I've had this on my harddrive longer then anything else (that I still play). If the next expansion is good (estimated May 2004), it'll last a while. BUt the servers will always be on, look at Motor City Online. Released around early 2002, with a server pop. of about 100, it was just shut down this august. I see good things coming for PlanetSide. Its the best MMO of the year. I mean, compared to what? Star Wars Galaxies? yea right.

Granted EQ has a MUCH larger player base but, as much as I fussed about VI then SOE, they know how to make a fun game and keep it fun (for the most part). EQ has been at least 6 expamtions if i recall correctly ( I played it for 4 years). The thing about SOE is when they change something they usually over do it. Eventually though they generally get it just about right. As others have said if they drop a good new expantion I see PS's longevity expanding and most probably its population growing. I seriously see the smaller population as a result of having to pay a monthly fee. I have serveral friends at work who play other FPS's and simply have not given PS the chance it deserves becuase of that one factor. That said, I would put even money if they actually tried PS they would be more than happy to pay because lets face it a huge battle for a base cannot be matched anywhere in the FPS genre.

As long as PS makes a marginal profit for SOE I think it will stick around because they have things like EQ to fall back on.

PlanetSide, with the expectations of at least 3 solid expansions, has 5 years under its belt. SOE isnt short on cash, so if pops are down, they're start whipping the devs.

I am a school kid and i know i haven't been able to play more than a couple of hours on a weekend for months now, but thanks giving is coming up and i will be back to sniping the hell out of those TR and VS scum very soon. PS opened me to other FPS games Like Wolfenstein and UT3k/4k and HL2 but i will never let my mom cancel my subscription and i will never leave it.

Yea, I remember when EverQuest put Ultima Online out of business and then Dark Age of Camelot put EQ out of business and then...

PlanetSide is still a maturing game, and it's way too early for the sky to fall just yet. We've been holding steady with decent subscription numbers for a while. Admittedly, we would like to see some additional growth, but there really isn't this mass contraction that people theorize about. One of the unique things about PlanetSide is that we do not have the same percentage of concurrent users as an RPG (probably because we do nto require the same intense time commitment), which is why people do see lower populated servers.

Our plans extend well into the future with SOE being committed to growing the service for some time to come. We aren't one of the heavy hitter RPG titles like EQ or DAoC, but there are plenty of games that would be pretty happy if they could meet our subscription numbers.

Well my game card doesn't expire till Dec. 27 this year. So i'll see how things go till then. If I liek whats gonig on i'll probably ask for a new game card for christmas.

lol! Got PS and my first game card for my birthday. After getting a game card for christmas. I'll have played this game for 4 months without paying a single cent and 3 more months of free play!

7 months of free PS! Funny thing is in March thats my brothers birthday. :p

I had to cancel my PS subscription so I could play FFXI and not go broke.

I had to delete PS afterwards because mom threatened complete revocation of computer/inarweb if I didnt download/install AOL 9.0 and I am NOT giving up my mp3's

If I had my own credit card, and a much better system, i'd still be playing. :(
