I never quite understood what the process is for a backpack's "life span". Sometimes they stick around for a whole minute (speculative), and other times as soon as the avatar disappears and turns into a backpack, it goes away about a half second later.
So what determines how long the backpack sticks around?

Enemy density I think.

Its the density of items along the ground, because they used to pile up like none onthe in big battles and it created FPS problems

The more fighting there is, the faster they deconstruct. They need to put a minimum timer on the damn things though, because all it means now is the more you need them, the faster they go away.

that why if you see you die in a large battle, the backpack deconstructs almost instantly.

Exactly.

My sincerest thanks to everyone who helped educate me, and make me the tiniest bit smarter. My ultimate goal is to some day achieve a moderate level of intelligence, and you have all taken me one baby step closer. :D
I'm curious as to where I can find that information. I won't claim that I searched high and low, but I did look around for it.
