Ground heats up faster than water, but cools off faster. So, without a large water source like a lake or something, the desert gets really cold at night, and hot in the day. A lake would allow the ground around it to stay warm, and spread throughout the rest of the ground. Also, air currents would push the heat from the water over the land.

I hear ya Hamma. Last year, during a freakish Ice storm in the Capital Region I woke up to a house that was around 35 degrees. Talk about f'n cold! No electricity.
