Why is there looting in Planetside, or is this just an old pic at

What could possibly be looted?

When you die all your remaining ammo and inventory items are put into a coffin (maybe weapons as well, someone know?), when another player uses the coffin they can replenish their supplies. Its a lot like in TFC how players would drop backpacks, or in CS how they drop their guns.

Exqactly. It's helpful tog et back the ammo you spent on killing a guy if you both used the same weapon. I think anyhting can be looted, including weapons and equipment, as long as you have the cert for it.

I guess people arent going to want to fight the Vanu much, cant get their ammo back :D

Unless they steal a Vanu weapon, or the Vanu use common pool. That punisher looks great!

I dunno, it would only work if it was automatic, that once you "Looted" the body, it would automatically take what you could use at that moment, such as the ammo for the guns you are holding. Cause i dont think with 100+ people nearby the corpse are gonna stay around long. Plus your in mid battle, the fighting aint gonna stop for you to check out a corpse thats laying around. And switch around weapons.

I doubt there will be much looting in heated battles. But it will definatly come in handy sometimes ;)

So do you have to open an inventory screen to loot a coffin? Or does it just automatically pick up anything you can use that you have space for?

Hamma
2003-01-21, 09:36 AM
Its an inventory

I'm sure after a battle it'll help save some time. It'll be more useful to scouts an expeditionary forces. In a large battle if they planned on going to another base or had to face anther battle soon it might be helpful. Also, Toimu should stop doing drugs. Or was he trying to fool someone? Or did tazz edit his post?...hmmmm....Too many choices. tazz you edited, didn't you?

Heh, good eye. BTW, how important do you think looting will be Warborn?

I think looting will be most helpful after small encounters, say squad size or smaller. You're low on ammo after a fight so just go over and restock from someone's coffin.

Question is can you force someone to re-spawn like you can in Return to Castle Wolfenstien by shooting or stabing thier corpse?

Sputty
2003-01-21, 12:32 PM
I don't think so. Medics can bring them from the dead like wolfenstein but I haven't heard of anything with stabbing or shooting. And BTW, are you Wrborn? Hmm? I didn't think so :D

Guys, remember that looting is also important if you want to get empire-specific weapons. It isn't just for extra ammo.

We know and we noted that earlier. And in other threads

looting is fine, it's not like it hurts ya....

everythings free so... why's it matter too much? =p

Nice to get fast ammo.

DiosT
2003-01-21, 04:36 PM
the only problem is we dont know how specific ammo is, by projectile type, or by gun =p

ABRAXAAS
2003-01-21, 04:37 PM
my guess is projectile type :D

Sputty
2003-01-21, 04:40 PM
Yeah, based on gun size probably.

DiosT
2003-01-21, 04:41 PM
next thing to consider--Rifles & pistols both can fire the same kinda projectile, but not likely they will use the exact same ammo (rifle ammunition is usually larger--thats where the extra power comes from to seperate it from a pistol)...

=p

DiosT
2003-01-21, 04:42 PM
then theres the shotgun pistol... might be interchangable with rifles, but heh, this opens a host of possibilities to speculate endlessly on =p

Heh, Stop doube posting so much. Also, stop whining like a little girl that Hamma banned you for being an ass in the IRC. You're probably right bout the ammo though....

hamma baned me to satisfy his overblown ego ;-P

and i double post because i think of new ideas, and it's simpler to reply then to edit, usually since many of them are on seperate 'tracks' of the same subject =p

anyway, might be a good thing to ask a dev

I have mixed feelings about looting from an inventory window.

On one hand, it lets you get exactly what you want from the corpse, like that medkit or AT weapon.

But on the other, it takes time. Even just a few seconds is like an eternity in a firefight.
You'll have to be very careful about choosing the right time to sprint over to the coffin, lest you find yourself missing a limb or two.

edit: forgot my angry little smilies - :flamemad:  :flamemad:  :flamemad:

Planetside tip #1) Wait until after the battle to restock on ammo :D

tazz
2003-01-21, 06:29 PM
There is also another thing to consider,
How many times do you think you will ran out of ammo before you die?
Remember theres probably gonna be about 100+ people nearby, either firing ahead of you, or towards you.
And my answer to that question is about 10 deaths to 1, and even then you still have your pistol or knife.

1 last question.
How long will the coffins hang around?, probably not long enough till the battle is over.

Sputty
2003-01-21, 06:32 PM
Hamma was able to run back and see his coffin.

How many times do you think you will ran out of ammo before you die?
Personally, not very often. But it will happen... to me, to you, to everyone.

Remember that not everyone will just grab their AR and fill the rest of their inventory with ammo. Most people will likely be lugging around a grenade or two, a medkit or a REK, and TWO different kinds of ammo (standard and AP).
Some will be carrying an AT weapon, which will probably suck up a good deal of inventory space even with just one or two extra rounds.
I personally plan on carrying a Jackhammer on any mission that even has the slightest chance of moving indoors.

I guess what I'm getting at is, people will only be able to carry a finite amount of ammo, even for your pistol.

Everyone will experience the need to restock from a coffin.
Everyone will experience the need to do so in the middle of a firefight.

It basically comes down to who cares? if your outta ammo you can A: run out to grab ammo potentially getting shot or
B: stay where you are with no ammo and get shot eventually
:D sounds pretty easy to me :D
