No, we long time players won't see any compensation from this. :(

On the other hand, the merging of the servers coupled with a long free trial will dramatically increase the overall population. As long as Sony's hardware can support the load without lagging all to beat hell, I suspect many of those demo'ers will get hooked.

Further more, by adding the additional pay options for our oversea's friends, SOE is showing effort to get new customers. All we need now is a commercial spot during the Super Bowl and we'll be set.

Even though I paid for the game (but not the expansion, thankfully) I think this is a good move for the community. My only real concern is allowing the trial period to last for 30 days, I'd rather they let the trial stay at 7 since they aren't charging people for the game. It seems like there were a number of annoying 7 day trial people and I think once you're paying for a game you treat it a bit differently. I'd rather see people paying quicker as 7 days is plenty to get them hooked anyhow.

Yay I dont need to pay for the game after I upgrade my comp (so it actually will function)! Muhahahaha! Free ride for Gunslinger! However I can only begin to express my underlying disgust of SOE for ignor....YES FREE PS, or wait crap back to topic...ing thier hardercore(er?) players.

Bode well at all for who?

You dont even play the game anymore, go away from game disucssion threads. Stay in the lounge and pol debate and everyone will be happy.

I for one am happy at the large effort to get new people into this game and community, it's good for SOE and its good for us. This game is 90x better than it was even 3 months ago.

It was inevitiable anyway. Look at some other online games, Earth & Beyond for example has a similar thing.

I got a fairly good deal on the game anyway, I'm not too bothered. Living in europe, I have to pay VAT on the monthly subscription anyway.

As opposed to other pieces of software which stay at the same price forever after release. Yup, never seen a bargain software bin.

People who want to be first in line pay for the right, it's not getting screwed.

I'm just glad to see that they are dealing with the population problem quite well even though they still don't admitt they have one....ie: server merge due to all the upgrades/improvements to allow the community to have a lot of larger battle and now this.

But anyhow grats to them for good ways to solve the issue(hopefully). :)

Hamma
2003-12-05, 06:40 PM
They probably dont admit it because they don't have it - the populatoin issue was because people were spread out on servers. That mistake was made when the game was released, they should not have opened all servers at once :\

And I can't see how this would be bad at all, i guess I am blind.

I think the bad here is the feeling some people have who paid $40-$50 for the game... the same will hold true when the expansion is made free to help populate the caverns.

Which is makin me think... time for a new thread :)

Well the game is 19.99 now anyway, if you bought it months ago than seeing the price go down is pretty much going to happen, it would be ignorant to think otherwise.

Sounds like you need a valid credit card to use the 30 day free trial.

Sounds better than the 7 day free trial because of that.

*30 days up*
Freeloader: "Ok, time to redownload PS!"
SOE: This credit card is already registered. Subscribe now!
Freeloader: "Wtf!" *tries a different one*
SOE: This address is already in use by another credit card. Subscribe now!"
Freeloader: Well, I can always call Grandma and borrow her Visa, I guess...

If you have to enter a credit card #, I think most people would opt to start paying 12.99 a month instead of going through further hassle, unless you're a cheap ass. If you happen to be a cheapass, take it from someone who only makes $7/hour: Don't be such a cheapass, its $.40 a goddamned day.

As a general rule, prices drop either because of increasing competition or because supply is overtaking demand. Since there is (arguably) no direct competition to PS, we must therefore assume it is because they have a surplus in capacity and need to get it filled before it undermines their profit picture.

Don't tell me Gamecubes are selling for $99 because the executives at Nintendo decided everyone should have one, even if they're losing money. They did it because sales are low, and they are probably having trouble getting developers onboard to make games since the size of the market for Gamecube games is tiny compared to PS/2, Xbox, or PC.

For me this is the "straw that broke the camels back."

http://boards.station.sony.com/ubb/planetside/Forum8/HTML/029049.html

But at this point, this to me is them turning to me and saying 'Thanks for the support and allowing us to give it away to everyone else!'

The more I watch SOE lately the more I feel like they're just ripping me off and seem to expect me to keep taking it.

I bet that 'free' client includes all of Core Combat as well.

They won't be seeing anymore money from me for a while. I'll wait til they decide to offer me some free time to come back and try the game.

Probably won't be very long before that happens at this rate, so why should I renew?

I HAD to buy the game. I tried downloading the full version and installing it, but everytime I did it was corrupted. I have a wierd problem with my computer. It doesn't like to install certain games.
My computer says, "Medal of Honor? No problem. Come right on in. Hitman 2? No no, you can't come in. Thank you, come again. Morrowind? Sure, come right on in, oh and bring your buddy, Expansion pack too. Neverwinter Nights? No, you can't come in." Go figure. My computer doesn't like any game that requires compression. I had to try to install Planetside from the Cd's 7 times before I got a clean install.

The only way I am going to have sympathy for somone is if you bought the game yesterday. Otherwise, its all just WAH and frankly I think its just bullshit rofl.

40$ or 30$ doesent mean you arent going to eat dinner one night. And if it does then dont play online games or buy games. If you bought the game 3-6 months ago, suck it up. If you don't like it, quit. Sell the game.

Shit I spent 400$ on a GF2 16MB a few years back, NOW ITS 1$ I DEMAND A REFUND.

WHAT?!?! THEY'RE MAKING CC FREE!!???

I swear if they do that i am PERSONALLY going to shoot someone at Sony. Then I'll blame it in GTA4 and be outta jail in a month.

GTA4 = GTA: VC

No, really, I could see reducing the price, but FREE is fucking stoopid...well atleast i got it for my birthday.

Flammey

I always like to own the game. I wanted to buy the cd for CC, but my friend paid for it, so I just downloaded it.
I have no regrets. I bought Asherons Call 2, played it for less than the month trial, didn't like it, so i sold it to a second hand electronics shop. I don't have any regrets about what I buy. I figure, once I own it, I don't have to buy it again.

Trouble with this new trial is that if you for some reason, lose the game, or it goes corrupt, or something, you'll have to download it again. But what if they stop letting you download it? There goes your characters. You'll have to buy the game to play it.

Shit happens.

No, Windows XP and Gamespot are allowing you to download the full version for free. Plus a 30 day trial. Never said anything about Core combat. Which probably means you'll have to buy it yourself, if you want to play it.

I bought the game for $50 when it was new, never installed it due to having 56k.

I have broadband now, and am eager to finally fight people, unfortunately on Konried that was a pain in the ass due to small populations. Now however with the merger, I am seeing even MORE big battles, multiple cont locks, and other smaller skirmishes raging. I felt ripped off when I couldn't find a "massive" battle in this "massive" online game at 9 at night, them giving away the 30 day trials in no way bothers me, yet makes me smile as I now know that I will soon have more people to play with.

Otherwise, its all just WAH and frankly I think its just bullshit rofl.

My disguist at this isn't just because of this one instance.

If I had been able to take advantage of all the 'free' time that was given out I'd have 51 free days of time on my account. And that's without getting a nice gamecard error/freebie addon of 3 months (which several people I know in game did) or abusing Fileplanet's 7 day trials which was VERY easy to do.

That's nearly 2 months of time that since I was a paying subscriber from the start I didn't get.

And now, on top of that I look over and see that they've decided 6 months in to give away the retail version (and probably Core Combat) to anyone who wants to provide a credit card number and get the full 30 day of free time you get with the retail product.

This has been an aggravation that has been building for a while. It's ok to give out trials and tests and the like and then make them go buy the retail product. But when you keep uping how much your giving way as as subscriber you have to ask yourself at some point why your even bothering to pay.

It's more then just 'WAH', but given how you seem to be able to ignore obvious issues (population) with the game and state they don't exist I'm not surprised you see it that way.

And don't act like this is something that happens to all MMOGs 6 months after release, I don't see any free copies of SWG out there. That game is only a few weeks younger then PS.

If CC is free in that Gamespot trial I think SOE owes it to it's long time subscribers to refund them the cost of the expansion in subscription time.

This doesn't matter to me at all. I got PS and a game card for my birthday from my brother. My gamecard expires Dec. 27. So i'll just ask for a new one this Christmas.

In total i've got PS and 7 months of free play. If I get a new card for Christmas. If SOE wants to give us veteran players a free month im all up for that. :D

Im on easy street baby!

I've only had to crack open my wallet upgrading my computer for this game.

Pretend to download it (it you already have PS) but cancel it.Hopefully it will give you code with 30 days free. A whole month! Tell me if this works or dosent work.

Sorry, but shut the fuck up you muppets. (yes, i just insulted you! oh nooo!)

Really, can we get a bit of perspective here? I've been fucked over by every games company except ID Software since the Amstrad CPC 464. While Sony are not perfect, they have made amazingly considerate steps towards their population. The fact that these steps are clearly profit driven has little consequence for existing users other than a better service. Looked at EA latley? Can they say the same? HELL NO.

I bought this game two days before they released the latest free download news. I was a little annoyed at first, but to be honest I don't care. This new release is in line with the product life cycle and will increase the server population.

Games are heading to an all new power consuption level which PSide already reaches towards. This comming year planetside will become a mainstream resource game with an existing user base. It's a serious pluss for sony. They seem to see this. If they get the bumps fixed with CC they will have an early 2004 field day with massive profits.
If they coud only get their game onto a few Magazine coverdisks they'd have the world in their hands, by the balls.

I think it's a good idea on Sony's part because when you play for 7 Days you'll get a BR10 or so if you play hardcore but you'll only truly become attached to your character when you play longer. That's at least my perspective.

All SOE cares about is money, like you didn't know.... :D
