What field do you want to go into?

Since this is a younger audience I have a question for you all. After you get out of high school, what do you plan to do? I am really curious to see how perspectives have changed over the last five years, and upwards of five years into the future.

I know this is a �geekier� crowd then most, so it will be slightly skewed towards the Information Technology field, but still should be interesting to see.

Five years ago 90% of respondents would have said they were going straight from high school to get their BS in Computer Science, then right on to a dot com company making $100k a year as an administrator, designer, or developer.

Now with the IT market as terrible as it is, especially for 150,000 developer jobs lost last year, I am curious to see if students are changing their views on �what they want to be,� or if there is still a heavy emphasis on computer repair, network administration, and in general �computer work.�

Oh, and before I get the �stop posting please� smiley, I won�t make any new posts for a few days :)

My path is already paved, I graduated in the Spring last year from Rutgers U. with a grad degree in City Planning. I work for my local county doing land developement review. Basically a mix between civil engineering and playing lawyer. I make traffic go smoother and make sidewalks safer.

Law Enforcement. Go figure eh? I like helping people believe it or not. I plan to get a degree in Criminal Justice and Police Administration, and then enlist with the local force when i'm old enough (21). As of now, i was a Deputy Explorer for the local PD but was dropped when i was convicted of a crime. I plan to seal my juvenille records when i'm 18, so don't suggest it :p, i know already.

No really, after 10 years in IT as a Network SEcurity Engineer (I was in Net Security before it was cool!) I'm now moving into Game Design for my own little company. Of course, not for kewl computer games but table top, computer games cost too much to make :)

I'm currently majoring in English and pursuing my Technical Communications Certificate. I plan to be a technical writer, editor, or document designer for an audio- or computer-related company. After the way my tech editing project went (editing a computer software manual), I'm leaning towards audio or NOT being an editor. On the side, I'd like to do my creative writing and try to get it published. The tech stuff is just stable income to me. :D

Going into microbiology, probably virology. Got a 1020 on my PSATs and I'm only a sophmore, so I have a good shot at getting a solid SAT score. My science grades are (usually) execelent, so it's atainable.

i love to build shit, i love computors, i love guns, i love food, i love to fly, and everyone has locks. i could open a shop that combines all(or most) of these. indeed, it would be a place where i would build and sell custom PCs and firearms, and fix locks, cars and whatnot. then there might be a small Diner as well.

i mean, hell. everyone has locks, everyone has a vehicle that breaks, good computers are hard to come by, and everyone needs a good, wholesom meal as they go to work.
ans for guns, well. it's always a good idea.

Whenever I manage to get back into and graduate High School (or any other way that gets me the knowledge I need to do this), I plan to go into Theoretical Physics. I have a passion for science. I also plan to write, probably science fiction or popularization of science (non-fiction science). Politics also interests me, and I seem to be well suited to it. For now though, I'm simply an advocate for a government program I believe in (it's really good and innovative, but it's just another program to the bureaucrats, and they want to change it (over my dead body!)).

But first I have to find a way to get the knowledge and skills I need without running out of the school screaming. :scared:

Heh, ever since I watched Back to the Future I knew what I wanted to do. When they asked me what I wanted to be back in...one of the primary grades, I said I wanted to be a Mad Scientist. Honestly, I thought that was what you called it!

Now though, I just want to be a garden variety Scientist, with a Nobel Prize. Also, I want my Time Machine!

Anway, the idea my friends and I have right now is to open a large gamestop in a city about 50 miles north of where I live. It's the 3rd largest city in the area, and a big college town and they don't have ANY gaming or hobby stores. If they want Magic cards or video games, they have to make an hour drive south to my hometown. So yeah, some friends and I plan to open a hobbystore/gamestop there.

Either that or I go get a job in senior management with my uncle who owns J. Walter Thompson, possibly the single largest advertising company in the world. If you're in the ad business you'll know my family name.

This is all after I get my MBA from somewhere....probably manhattan college.


EDIT: Or possibly US Army, go into special forces, stuff like that. biggest drawback is the relatively low salary compared to that other stuff.

A racer driving stockcars around in circles. Machanic, so i could maybe make a stockcar/any race car plus make my own car. A Carpender(sp), no reason, but i see where stuff go. An Engineer....completely random, but I'm a mini math wiz. A history teacher, I thought of it, teaching little ones about the people who made this country free (canadians and outlanders dont start going about how kickass ur country is). Well the only 2 things that I do is ride bmx and computers. Riding bmx professionally is out of the question but thats not the reason I do it. I was thinking of starting a bmx company that makes a few parts with some ideas in my head but its to risky. Computers is the only thing I know good so I'm gonna do something in that field. Maybe CAD design, modeling, graphic artist, or web design. I have basic knowledge in all of those but nothing stands out that I wana perfect so we'll just have to see :) My freinds dumbass cousin use to say she wanted to be a dog when she grew up , she was 11 when she said that , what an idiot ! :lol:
