This thread is the official Return of The king thread. Let's try and limit it too one thread. I will start us off with a few rules.
1. Don't make other ROTK threads plz...
2. Be careful of spoilers, please make it so you have to scroll a certain distance if you wan't to include spoilers. And notify the reader of spoilers incoming.
I will start us off with the Rotten Tomatoes review. Anything above 80% on RT can be considered EXCELLENT! But 97%? That's unheard of.

It looks sweet. Someone said to me that the film has a different ending than the book. Is that true?

Why don't we just leave out spoilers all together?

Spoilers are fine. I'd just rather have 1 huge ROTK thread instead of 5,000 like the matrix. Just make sure you mask your spoilers PLZ!

No offense but I doubt people are going to take your opinion of the movie and books into consideration.

Can't wait to see it!
Spoilers? The books have been out for 50 some years, I don't think you can spoil the story unless someone hasn't read them. (And in that case, they're a dumbass and movies should be ruined for them for all eternity)
The first one was awesome, the second was awesome ^2, and the third one looks amazing.

I recommend it to anyone. this production is going to rob spielberg of his oscars this year.

these lord of the rings movies are like the star wars of today. I like how the special effects don't seem flashy and intented to impress people like in the new Star wars movie or Matrix 2/3. The special effects in this just seem to be there to not make up for a stupid plot or bad lines but as a neccesity.

BULLSHIT LOTR is one of the greatest stories ever told. its not like the Matrix where its extremely vague and then it throws you off by the constant action. LOTR is NOT like star wars OR the matrix, in fact, its better then both of them. LOTR has some of the greatest battle sequences of all time and a legendary story.

Sorry but you can't compare this to Starwars, its a classic film and was made way before any LOTR movies meaning the effects were *whao*

That was one of the hottest movies i have seen in a VERY long time. I think it is def beter than either of them , but of course, they are all good. And of course i want to know, how is the book ending different, as i only read the first 2 books.

I agree. There was also an awkward spot when Frodo and Sam were trapped on that rock protusion on the side of Mount Doom surrounded by lava. The whole picture faded to black for like 2-3 seconds, and I thought they were going to start rolling credits. Then they faded right back in from a different camera angle. Also, I believe in the books that Aragorn ended up with Eowyn and not Arwen.

No, in the books I hardly remembered the whole Eowyn-Aragorn thing at all. In fact, I don't think it was there, and I believe Eowyn AND Theoden died. Maybe Eowyn didn't die, but I know she got hurt real bad, and she smuggled Merry with her to fight.

nope Arwen got Aragorn in books, trust me read it 5 times, Eowyn married Farimir, they met while in the hospital,no she never died either. And also the Aragorn-Eowyn thing basicly happened in movies just like was in books, she had crush,he had Arwen, she settled for Farimir instead.

Never paid attention to LOTR until I started playing EQ a few years ago. When the first movie came out, and i realized how heavily EQ borrowed off the story, I was hooked. 1. Loved. 2. Liked a lot. 3. Hoping it is the best.

They made much better books than they did movies. (please please please read the books if you have not read them but liked the movie)
The Struggle of Frodo and Sam was not able to be propperly capture in movie format.
I though the scoring was poor. You hear the same triumphant motive over and over and over and over. There was no musical build up to go along with the story line.
Movie wise:
FOTR > ROTK > TTT
BTW, who else was expecting to see some of those Sam and Frodo moments burst into buttsex scenes.
P.S. I thought the gratuitous Legolas ownership totally owned.

Try them again in a couple of years.
They are a bit slow, but in that slower style you Tolkien is able to deliver you a rich lanscape, and is able to effectively express the major theme of the trilogy.
If you do decide to give them a try again at some point, you might want to start out with the Hobbit, it is an easier read than the other three.

so how different was the book ending vs the movie ending??? how was the ring destroyed in the book?
Tavin
2003-12-19, 11:48 AM
The in book it was destroyed in exactly that manner. Sheesh. I won't post a spoiler on it for anyone but, being the big JRR buff that I am-- I was pleased as punch with the last movie...
It was the only fucking one that stuck to the freakin' story line. Only thing missing was together with Grima Saruman fled to the Shire and set his orders there. He was known in the Shire under the name of Sharkley or Chiefs Big Man. In the Shire Saruman is presented like a content old man with sinister sparkling eyes. As Isengard was wiped off by the Ents, who in their turn were inspired by the hobbits to do that, Saruman as a revenge decided to destroy their holes. And it will be pleasant to think of that and set it against my injuries, said he. Of course, when a group of hobbits led by Frodo appeared before Saruman, he realized his defeat. But, nevertheless, attempted to stab Frodo with a dagger, which just glanced off Frodos armour.
For his foul deeds Saruman got an awful death Grima sprang on him and sliced his throat. Sarumans spirit rose from his body like smoke from a fire, looked toward the West, and disappeared with the wind.
Sigh.
// ARWEN DID NOT SAVE FRODO IN THE SECOND BOOK! IT WAS GLORINFINDEL! STUPID DIRECTOR!! //
My only real rant.

Legolas + Ohliphaunt + Good Joke = Best. Scene. Ever.
It wasn't in the books, but it damn well should have been.

I understand that they filmed the escape of Saurumon and the later Shire scenes but cut them out becuase the movie was already 3.5 hours...
Cristopher Lee (one of the driving forces behind the films) was pissed!
2 things !!! SPOILER SORTA!!!!
Things to look for in the special edition!
1) Why does Aragorn have orc blood on his sword at the black gate? Y'know, before the fighting! I figure he kills a few, if you see it again you'll notice it!
2) Unlike the other movies that had good trailer control, this one managed to have like 3 scenes in the trailer that were not in the movie, from the "see the shire again" line to that one Rohan guy crying like a little bitch... Just stuff to ponder!
All in all I loved it! It's about time that hollywood sees that you can actually be true to a story, and really very true to the books, and have a great movie!
