View Full Version : Cheap tactics? New Inf wants to know...

I've been playing this game since back in beta, and have always been a grunt (HA/Adv Med/Eng/Some Vehicle). After the recert period, I decided to switch some things up for the hell of it to alleviate some boredom. I decided to go Inf./Combat Eng./Adv Hack/Max/Some Vehicle (Assault Buggy for now). I have found great joy playing as a silent assassin lately, but I have this unclean feeling - as though my joy is tainted by the nature of my tactics. I've seen all over the PS forums and here that people hate it when people go on the offensive as a cloaker. This is by no means the only way I play. I'm often the one transporting my outfit mates around, doing Black Ops. like blowing enemy Gens, and doing Ant runs.
I have a middle of the road PC, that when looking back, was hindering my performance as a grunt. When I would go toe-to-toe with someone, I would often lag out, and they would end up behind me shooting me in the back. Top that off with the fact that I'm not what you'd call a young'un, my reflexes are not nearly twitchy, and I was losing most battles that I unwisely entered. Call me sick, but I think it's great fun sticking an Amp in a snipers back, or placing a boomer under an AA Max. I still die often, but being invisible has at least given me a chance. I haven't gotten too many hate tells, and the ones I do get are usually along the lines of "Good thing I was looking at my map", to which I usually reply "what, were you lost?".
So what's the consensus? Is playing an Infiltrator more as a silent killer than as a literal infiltrator looked down upon? Can't people see the fun in placing a boomer under some poor unsuspecting souls feet and saying "Greets!" as you blow them to pieces? Inquiring minds want to know...

As long as you're not exploiting some bug in the game any tactic is perfectly honorable in my opinion.
I used to be an offensive infiltrator so I know how you feel. When you go into an empty tech plant and destroy everything in the area it does kind of feel almost unfair to the enemy sometimes. But that's the point of black ops.
I think with all the infiltrator bugs that are currently in the game you should bet bonus points for being an offensive infiltrator. It's much harder now with the damn interlink bug and the visible weapons between switching.

If it wasn't for the infil suit and combat engineering I probably would have quit the game by now. Is it cheap to knife a Phoenix user to death while he's piloting that missile towards one of your MAXs? Probably, but it's no less fun and it's silent to boot. You can also make the argument that the Phoenix is pretty cheap, or any of a number of different weapons/tactics. I think most people who hate offensive infiltrators just don't like getting one upped by a semi-visible guy with no armor.

Common there is nothing wrong with what you do. I had the same "unclean" feeling for several weeks after I started playing as a cloaker but all that is gone now as I have noticed my kill stats have gone up because of snipers :groovy:

Bah, I'm a grunt, and I'm perfectly fine with infs. Sure, you can kill me, but I can kill you too. It's a just a fair a fight as if I were fighting another grunt, but just on different levels. Simple as that.

Being a pure killer style infiltrator is totally legitimate. As a matter of fact, most people dont have the certs to do proper infiltration anyways and just end up shooting at people. The way I see it is since Infiltration is so gimped right now, you might as well use the suit to just kill with. This type of Infiltrator learns how to exploit all "safe" zones. Safe zones are like when advancing grunts rest behind trees to heal up, snipers who think they are safe, and people on catwalks, at terminals, or people advancing along a base wall that stop in corners.

I hate the silent assassins. Not because I don't see the fun on getting the jump on a unsuspecting enemy. Hell, shooting people in the back with my lasher is one of the most enjoyable things in the game. I take no damage and get an easy kill.
But everyone hates suprises where you end up dead in the end. And getting killed by a cloaker that you didn't know was there when you feel like your safe is just plain annoying. I cary audio amp and DL to try to prevent this at all turns, so it cheeses me off even more when I get killed by the invisible bastards. The worst would have to be when a cloaker starts killing you, so ya slam on your DL whip around and manage to kill him before he kills you. You then rest a second to repair your armor and switch on the advanced regen when another cloaker comes up behind ya and plugs ya full of lead.
But hate tells are uncalled for, you should either mash your keyboard or yell at the ceiling. Then spawn and go find the guy who wasted ya. I love this game and couldn't imagine it without cloakers despite my dislike of them. Besides, if I ever play cloaker I would do the same thing.

I have to echo this opinion. I'd like to further add that nothing in this game is really "cheap" IMHO. You are trying to kill the enemy with any tool at your disposal. What's more cheap an invisible attack from behind or a boomer in a doorway or a flail blindly spamming shots into an enemy base or mowing infantry in your AMS?
Survive any way you can and kill any way you can. :)

No. Especially when most people associate an infiltrator as being a silent assassin, which is about the LAST thing you want to be doing except in a serious all-out brawl where you sneaking around is unfeasible or worthless.
And whatever "map" tells you got, were likely some shmuck trying to make himself feel better about all that hardware being powerless to stop an AMP-wielding infiltrator.

You're not exploiting anything, so have fun. I enjoy the cat and mouse games with cloakers.
The only time I worry about being cheap is when I'm munching on aircraft with my Starfire. I'm just really good with it and sometimes I worry people think I'm cheating. I took out a squad of 5 Mosquitos in less than one minute when they jumped me the other day and if it hadn't been for the decimator to the face I would have gotten a few more. In one battle I wound up with exactly 50 aircraft kills. That was a lot of BEP for a guy playing solo. Especially, with 4 fully loaded Liberators coming in at around 1200-1400 BEP a piece. The Starfire is hands down the best 2 point cert you can get in my opinion.
That is so uncheap it is silly, the people who bitch about it on the OF seem to be other infils that suck ass.
No real players think killing folks as an infil is cheap.

i agree... except when people hack (not using a rek, hacking into thew game itself)for an unfair advantage, but that is not often...

If anyone ever tells you that you're being "cheap" then show them how the /ignore command works.
I don't understand how people could think that wahtever an infiltrator does is cheap. Anyone who thinks infils are cheap should try playing one for a few months, it's not easy.
It takes so much patience, and so much self-control not the sue SOE for all the current bugs that affect us, not to mention their disability to really help us out in anyway in a timely manner.

I can only appluade those who are pro infiltraitors. What with the bugs and all effecting them. I myself am not an infil. Just a grunt. But infact I feel cheap when ever I see a cloaker without dark light on and I manage to kill him. That makes me feel kinda like a hax. This is the worst for NC cloakers. Heck I don't need darklight to see them.
I usually get plugged in the back by an infil when ever im trying to pick people off with my cycler.
I don't hate cloackers they are usally just a easy kill for me :groovy:

I think the only people that look down at pure-kill infils is the sabotage infils. It's not because it's a cheap tactic, quite the oposite in fact. It's because you're not useing the suit in the most effective way.
I'm with 1024, people that bitch about stealthers being cheap should get their heads out of thier asses and play one.
Edit: And if you find that infiltrateing is easy for you, down worry about being cheap, because all you've done is found your nich.

Just keep blowing up your enemies to hell and back! :D

The only time I've ever felt cheap as an infil was when I was camping a core combat spawn room blowing up newly spawned people with boomers. I had the hack on the base and I was waiting for the 5 minute timer to finish up. If I could have blown the tubes or whatever they have there, I would have. Since I couldn't, the most effective way to suppress the respawns was with boomers.
Besides that, I've never felt cheap as an infil. Its not an easy role to play, considering that you're wearing wet tissue paper for armor, can't carry rifle-sized weapons, and have to go against the DL hordes with interlink facilities. The entire time is filled with tension, whether you are hunting other stealthers out in the open, sneaking around on enemy walls knifing snipers, stealthing through a base trying to get to the CC, attempting to steal an AMS surrounded by a crown of enemies, or doing a mad surging rush through crowded halls into the spawn room where you lay down a boomer.

In and out without getting seen? Taking out the bad guy and getting away clean? Sneaking in and blowing a generator to hinder the enemy? Well if thats cheap and cowardly.. tell that to a Green Beret or Navy SEAL. As a matter of fact, I am currently about a 30 min drive from one of the Navy's SEAL schools on the east coast. I'd be happy to drive ya over so you can tell his cheap and a coward.
also.. for the record.. I don't think camping spawn tubes in a tower is lame either. Am I suppose to just leave and go hack while you respawn and shoot me in the back?
I'll let ya spawn unhindered.. as soon as you let me hack it.
Rock on baby!

Spawn camping is a necessary evil, nothing more and nothing less. The only thing that's cheap are the people that go out of their way to camp spawn in order to run up cheap kill stats. I'm personally embarrassed by 90% of my Standard Armor kills, with the 10% being those handful of people electing to run around in Standard with their Jackhammer. The other 90% took no skill on my part at all.

I have to publically call myself out on this one. Last night i was out in the middle of nowhere and i started chasing an nme flail. Well before i saw the flail i ran into a cloaker and chased him for a little ways.... I didn't get him.... So i continued on in my journey......... A minute or so later i ran up to the flail and started nailing him with my jackhammer with AP shells. I fired about 5 times and almost killed the flail them WHAM freaking cloaker dropped a mine on my ass killing me. I got pissed as hell. And yup i sent him a hate tell. It wasnt that nasty of a message but I was gritting my teeth and pounding on my desk. Wont happen again tho i respect those dudes who are good enuff to get by me w/o me noticing.. :D
I recently saw starship troopers again, and remembed a quote that fits nicely with this thread:
"All is fair in love and war."

I don't think its cheap. More than any other weapon/armor config, an infiltrator needs to know when to move, where to move, and how to move. If you don't play smart, your nekkid arse will get filled full of holes faster than a chilli-fed baby on laxitivs.

Wow, I thought I'd get a lot more negative responses - that's cool... Like I mentioned, playing a cloaker allows me the opportunity to stay alive for just a little longer, because I can get the jump on someone before my computer starts flailing about. Who knows, once I get a new videocard I may change my play style again. I have had a lot of funny things happen as a cloaker, though. I remember once I was stalking a hillside, and killed a TR who was concentrating on firing their striker at someone (I play VS on Emerald). I got a tell saying "lol, wait a minute" - I didn't get it, so I just went about my business. There was a TR held tower nearby, where they must have switched into their Inf suit, because I saw someone run by - I switched on DL and started chasing them with my trusty Amp out, and as I was closing in they dropped a spitfire, and I was dead before I could stop running. It was the same person I had just killed, and I got another tell that simply said ":p" - now that cracked me up. I congratulated them and respawned. The only thing I was pissed about was that I lost the Repeater I had just looted off of them.
Now that I know I'm not alone in my joy as a silent assassin, I'd like to hear some strategies/stories from the dedicated Infiltrators out there. I love it when I come across someone who doesn't have DL, and they start shooting into the air wildly. I usually wait for them to calm down, and surge up with a boomer. That is usually followed by V-V-S ("Apologies" on my toon) and a big boom ;)

When you're an infiltrator, nothing is cheap, I can't tell you how many times I've done this
Me:/tell EnemyMAXDudeintheCC Hey, we need help out in the CY, QUICK, get out there!
MAX: Ok, BRT
Me: Hack the CC, and run like hell, /tell the MAX "Thanks for the base!"
That might be considered cheap, hell, I consider it cheap, but it works, and if it works, Why should we not be allowed to do it? Shooting people in the back, knifing, boomers, hell, if you can pull any of that stuff off, good.
And to all those whiners about being shot in the back TURN AROUND, when I hear an AMP , every time, I turn around , whether I'm being shot or not, make it a habit, it helps, :)

We Respect infils, but we will never love em. I had one "do it to me" yesterday (It may have been you). I anchored down my AA max overlooking a bridge. Suddenly, I'm getting machine Gun Bullets up my But.
I Un-anchor, whip around, and Its a Spitfire Turret. Where the Hemm did that come from? I start Jumping around firing back. "Wait, you Idiot! Jumping around does no good against a turret! Shoot It. Shoot It!" Suddenly I'm looking down on myself from about 12 feet up. The good news is the spitfire has stopped shooting. The bad news is: I'm Dead.
Now I know I did you some damage, cause you Must have physically hurt yourself laughing at my antics. As for your tactics, I'd like to rip your head off and put it where the sun don't shine; but I'd like to shake your hand first.
At no point was I looking at my map.
Rada-K / Dogsbody
One of my best stories is when i was assaulting a tower with my squad. I was hanging in the semi-back, as an infiltrator should do in that kind ofsituation.
We head up the stairs and come face-face with 5 TR, one with a cycler and the others with MCGs. My squad gets demolished by them, but manage to take out one of the MCGers.
They have no idea i'm even there. All of them, except the guy with the cycler pulls out an engy/med tool and starts repairing/healing. I move in and get behind them, and place a boomer right under 3 of the MCGers, who are repairing/healing each other.
I set it off, immedietly alerting the other MCGer and the Guy with the cycler that i was there. I flicked on surge and ran up the stairs, fumbling with my inventory to get my trusty AMP out. As i turn around the top corner with my gun ready, i see the last two TR round the corner, both with DL on.
I made a daring leap over my foes heads, with surge still on, gun-a-blazin'. I take out the guy with cycler in mid-air, and claer his corpse and the last MCGer. The MCG for some reason couldn't seem to find me, so he backed himself into a corner. Just his luck, it was the corner that i had chosen to back myself into while i reloaded my AMP. :cool2:

I just recently started a new character - stealth advanced hacker, and I fuckin love it man. I die alot, but I enjoy stalking my victims and nothing's better then sneaking up and sticking a knife in their back's. It's great. The only problem I have is I can't find the control console half the time.
just remember that every CC is downstairs, except for Bio Labs and Amp Stations.

Tech Plants and Amp Stations.
Just remember. Killing someone who hass 100, or 150 times more armor than you is satisfying. However, Killing them with style is infinitly better.
Ex: Guy gets out of enforcer, and goes to shoot at one of my agile friends. I walk up to the drivers side-door, and plant a boomer on it. Naturally, the guy comes back to move his buggy, and BLAM - No more driver.
Also, you can actually win the game if you get 10 "Reveller" MAX-boomer kills.
Why "Reveller" kills? It's not like he invented killing MAXs.

Boomering where people will be (like the driver's side of a vehicle) is incredibly satisfying. That also works with an engineer going down a line of MAXs repairing their armor in the middle of a battle. Taking out that one engineer can turn things around in a hurry, so you plant a boomer behind one of the MAXs and wait for him to come repair it. If you're really lucky they'll actually look down right as you're setting it off, which is an even bigger kick.
