I Just got PS for Xmas and atm only have a 56K dial up account here in UK.
I go Broadband in mid february and wonder if I should save the 'free' month for then - will playing at 56K put me off the game?
Advice appreciated, especially from any UK players out tere.

You can play but downloading patches will take decades. It will be fairly frustrating. I would wait.

Take it from a previous 56ker, don't even try it. It didn't used to be so bad, but after all of their updates it's not even worth an attempt. If you do somehow stomach the 14 hours of patching (I'm assuming) then you'll end up in a game you're ticked off at constantly. You might find some playability in very small situations but every time you accidentally get too close to the real battles your machine will laugh at you. Wait, it's only a few more weeks.

I agree with everything these guys said. If you play PS on 56k you'll get very bad lag and you'll get frequent server disconnects. Do your self a favor get broadband and use the month then. And welcome to the Planetside and Planetside-Universe Community.

if you still want to find out for your self I believe planetside has a 7 day trial on fileplanet. you don't need to download it since you already have the CD's. just get the key from http://www.fileplanet.com/betas/verify.aspx?b=1024&u=http://www.fileplanet.com/betas/planetside_trial.aspx
and use it. then you can check if the game works on 56K or not. if you decide it works use the key you got from the CD's on the same account you used with the 7 day trial key to keep playing.
good luck and don't forget NC pwnz when you pick an empire :D

I played on 56k for a while just in the begining and it was horible, but that was when the servers had huge pops, it was playable except in big fights, and te patches took hours to days

I have 56k, and cable isn't even available here yet. I play on 56k, and don't lag except for big battles. Yes, patches are long, but if your gonna get broadband, just wait.

I'm 56k and will continue to be so for a while.
Patches will be hell, if your up to 2+ days of d/ling patches, go for it. I had PS since retail, so I didn't really have this problem.
Combat is harsh, you'll probably have at the least 200 ping, its ok. If you want kills, get sniper cert. And dont walk into zergs, it takes a minute or 2 to get back on track.

here here! Death to barney's!
yeah man w8 till u get BB till u use that month. 56k + PS = tons of frustration and beating on your keyboard and mouse constantly. + if u have a ping of more than 100 then you shooting and aiming become lagtastic and u gotta learn to lead ur target by a mile and chances are ur dead by then cause u lagged. If i have a ping higher than 100 I just feel cheated cause shots aren't true.
Yeah it is but it will be laggy.

Small battles are tolerable. When you accidentally spawn into a tower/AMS in the middle of a zerg and stand at the equipment terminals for 2+ minutes after hitting G waiting for the menu to come up you'll become significantly less happy with the gaming experience.
And get used to dying and not seeing what did it, sometimes you're taking tons of damage and not even knowing it and suddenly all of that information reaches your computer at once and you drop dead in the middle of nowhere.
