I was curious if any of you used a newsgroup server, which one, how much you pay, and if you use it to download from alt.binaries.* what download speeds do you get?

Thanks,

Most ISP's provide one to their customers.

You know Mr. Hamma... I never even thought of that...

I figured Comcast just offered the pipe. But I checked, and sure as can be, they offer a free 1.5GB/month fully mirrored, 1 month retention newsgroup service.

I gota find my Comcast username, which I haven't the slightest clue what it is... But that will work...

And they claim they mirror all of alt.binaries.* woot  :D

Yeah I just use my isp's server. Check out alt.binaries.cd.image.games and alt.binaries.games for some good stuff.

Its like a giant messageboard, but can also be used for file transfer and storage.

And to the best of my knowledge USENET is an extention of FidoNet from back in the BBS days. How Fidonet would work is people would make posts on their local BBS, then every night each BBS would call a neighbor BBS or two and synchronize it's Fidonet database. So in that way Fidonet was not centralized, it was not under any central authority and existed everywhere... So even if the first 20 BBSes to host Fidonet died, Fidonet would live on through it's partners.

That is pretty much how USENET works, although not exactly.

It is a fantastic resource... If you want you can go to Groups.Google.com and search the newsgroups. It is unlikely that you will not find answers to almost every question you can imagine.

www.giganews.com is the best if your ISP doesn't provide good usenet service.

Fortunately for me, Verizon provides unlimited downloads @ 1.5mbs

Indeed VZ does rock in hosting.

But I couldn't connect to Squick's servers.
