I was thinking on this the other day. Why do base defensive have to be nothing but steadily escalating deathtraps for the defender. Now i've put up posts in the past on how i feel a small three year old child could design a better defensable position then we've been given with these bases. One thing I'd like to think that whould help this a little (although admititedly not much) whould be the ability to place spitfire turrents indoors. Your already limited to placing them only in friendly SOIs so i dont think this whould be that much of a stretch.

They would rack up greif indoors. Think if you put one in a spawn room :O

The base designs need a major overhaul, in addition to better or more defensive elements. I listed a few of them in some rant I did a few weeks ago.
Personally Spitfires aren't the answer. They only screw with a specific armor class, namely those with little armor to no armor. And that's if they are set up properly or linked with a motion alarm and an interlink. I'd go with an actual indoor weapons security system, like a scaled-down Phalanx system (by scaled down I mean no turrets, a remote link or independently-operated fire control system).
Also, the whole archway system is more than a little ludicrous. What dork designs a base and puts two giant gaping holes in it, than any dude with a tank can drive through immediately following an EMP blast? Your best bet is to move the tank traps (the blast walls) inside a little more, then put up some of those giant metal electronic gates that they use at real-world security checkpoints. They can be hackable, and should also drop when the generators are out. Perhaps even destroyable with a reinforced-armor loadout of solid Boomers. When you combine this with the shield module, that's a tough nut to crack. It also means start watching for more Galaxies.
And the back door... what numb-nuts designs a military base, a fortress, with a back door like that? You have an open foyer, and one dinky little door that ANY soldier with a REK can hack in to. There should at least be an inside/outside hack system where the inside hack releases a blast door that covers that foyer.
With these three simple improvements, the game would be a lot better. When you have clashing armies that are busting down bases, and you have a dedicated defense with those changes, that's a serious battle. As it stands now, the only way to properly defend a base is when the enemy hasn't got any bases or hackable links. Defending a base might be easy, but only when the enemy is split and his forces are not combined and striking with a sledgehammer blitz. Base defense right now means you're just driving up the XP they get when they finally hack the base.

The worst part about that would be the difficulty in getting around the things in hallways. Other than that it would be pretty fun (heck, you only get 10 per CE anyhow and people aren't going to dump them all inside unless there's a full breach in effect). I would say that the only way I'd like to see it is if there's a tweak to the interlink benefits in regards to cloakers, broken record I know. As it stands now there's a slight chance a cloaker could do some damage at a base with interlink FLB if he can make it inside. If spitfires are allowed inside it would keep cloakers completely away from all interlink bases.

I regularly take out agile/reinforced and MAXs with spitfires. Want to see something funny? Stick a Scattercannon MAX between 2 spits and watch him burn. He'll be lucky to blow one of them up before he's killed. Spitfires chew through armor just fine, they just don't live long enough to be anything more than a hindrance in many situations. Deployed properly the spitfire can do some good damage.

I remember hearing way back when that they were planning on changing the backdoor so that it could only be hacked from the inside. I personally think that's a great idea still, forcing you to get somebody all the way through the base to the back door to let anybody in. At least it would take a little bit of strategy to get some numbers inside that way.

This may not be the right thread for this, but for me the greatest idea for a Planetside expansion would be all new buildings and bases. Like totally redisign each building from the ground up. Much like how Tribes and Tribes 2 had some really interesting building layouts, I would love to see Planetside do the same. I think we are all getting tired of the same spiriling staircase of every single tower in Planetside, the totally unused bunkers of endless potential, and the cookie-cutter base layout.
An expansion with:
all new buildings
a new CE module
a new Adv medic module
common pool MAX
a new empire specific fighter plane
Underwater bases and vehicles (we can dream right?)
a new Empire specific SA
a new class of vehicle (Superheavy tank), empire specific would be a plus
..would just totally own

There should be murder-holes in the hallway leading off the back door. A defender would walk up to the wall and a slit would open that he could shoot out of. They walk away and the slit closes.

I think indoor mines would be a nice touch too, especially when the MAXs come charging in. Im all for more defence on bases

Turrets are one of the reasons T2 sucked.

Some stupid CSR. Hamma went on a rant because of that. It was funny because it was justified when the patch had some major bugs in it.
